Recently, I saw a Durex ad that genuinely shocked me.

Not in a bad way. It was just unexpected.

Naturally, I went to the comments expecting backlash.

But the general public clearly didn’t mind.

People were impressed.
They called it creative. Bold. Smart.

“That makes sense.”
“Absolutely brilliant.”
“Oh… I get it.”

It was interesting to watch and it confirmed something many brands still struggle to understand:

Disrupting the norm still works.
But only when it’s done intentionally.

Some brands, in the name of being “bold,” end up setting themselves up for failure.

You’ve probably seen it:

- Overly sensitive jokes

- Shock value that calearly wasn’t thought through.

- Illustrations or campaigns that feels forced.

And when backlash comes, everyone suddenly blames creativity.

But creativity wasn’t the problem.

Misunderstanding the audience was.

I understand why many brands choose to play safe.

But safe also makes you forgettable.

The brands that win aren’t reckless.
They’re self-aware.

They understand:

who they are,
who they’re speaking to,
and how far they can push the boundary without breaking trust.

Because that’s what people remember.

Call me delusional but one thing about Ire? She’s never settling.

Last year, I wanted to attempt a big project.

And a lot of people around me said it was impossible.

I obviously did not believe them, but I noticed that it subconsciously sipped into my mind.

Don’t worry, I was quick to pour it right out again 😅

The moment I snapped out of it, I realized that being delusional is actually a gift.

That strong belief that something will work even when almost everyone else says otherwise?

You need that to actually make something worthwhile.

P.s. Have people ever told you to your face that you’re aiming too high?

If your goal is to be visible, there’s a tendency to think being chaotic is a good way to go about it.

Maybe it’s intentional, maybe it’s not.

But the truth is, it’s bound to happen if you leave things to chance.

So, like the kind princess that I am, I am here to share ways you can avoid becoming invisible without turning your brand into chaos.

A few simple principles help:

📌 Know exactly who you are speaking to
 You don’t need the whole world to like you. Just the right people.

📌 Have clear opinions about your industry
 Safe, neutral commentary rarely builds authority. No one cares, really.

📌 Tell stories that reveal how you think
 People remember perspectives, not just information. Stories have been proved to stick for longer, leverage it.

📌  Be consistent with your message
 The same ideas repeated over time create recognition.

📌 Focus on clarity, not controversy.
 The goal isn’t to shock people(most of the time). The goal is to be understood.

In a bid to become visible, people go extreme.

The world we are in nowadays isn’t helping.

But always keep in mind that just because something worked for a brand and it seemed to be highly successful does not mean it’s right for your brand.

Choose wisely.

Trends should teach us a lesson. But they seems they do the opposite.

Trends don’t last, and that should signal something to us.

Or, do we just ignore them?🤔

There are way more solid things you should chase rather than going after trends endlessly.

Not because they are bad.

But because no successful and long lasting business has ever been built by simply going with the flow.     

Be like the people who don’t buy things just because they are trending.

Not because they are bad, but because in a few weeks, months at most, it’ll be considered a crime to still flaunt it. (Yeah, society is weird like that)

Honestly, stand out.
It’s the best thing you can do for both yourself and your brand.

If a bank attempts a Durex ad strategy, people will NOT find it funny.😄 

It’s not that they lack creativity or luck.

It has everything to do with brand permission.

Some brands have earned the right to say certain things while others simply cannot afford to.

For a brand like Durex, provocative messaging fits their category. It fits their history. It fits what people already associate them with.

So when they push a boundary, it feels consistent.

But if a bank is provocative, people are bound to react differently.

Why?

Because audiences don’t just react to the message.
They react to who is saying it.

That means no matter how successful a Durex campaign is, it would be extremely foolish for a bank to replicate it verbatim.

Every brand operates within invisible boundaries:

- Category expectations
- Cultural context
- Past behavior
- Audience psychology
- Established identity

When you violate those without preparation, it feels forced.

So, before trying to be bold, ask:

▪️Who are we really?
▪️What do we stand for?
▪️How far can we stretch without breaking trust?
▪️Have we earned this?

Because boldness without positioning is noise.

But boldness backed strategy always works.

It’s really saddening how people take these things for granted.

Imagine grinding so hard, only to leave all you’ve been laboring for on earth.

Don’t worry, I give myself this pep talk often also.

Life is already hard as it is. Don’t make it harder.

I know you want to make money, have freedom, live in a mansion and all of that, but it only makes sense when good health is in the picture.

I used to hate speaking up.
But somehow, trying so hard to avoid trouble only put me right in the middle of it.

Because the truth is this:
The world is not very kind to timid people.

Standing tall, saying what you think, going after what you want, that’s usually the better strategy.

The same thing applies to brands.

You might think playing it safe all the time is the smartest way to build a brand.

But over time, it does the opposite.

It slowly makes you invisible.

And invisible brands, no matter how good their product is, rarely sell half as much as a loud and mediocre brand that people actually remember.

Playing it safe all the time is basically choosing that invisible path.

I get it, though.

- You don’t want to offend anyone.
- You don’t want to step on toes.
 - You don’t want to get dragged on the internet.

No one wants that.

But if you live in constant fear of making mistakes, success will stay far away too.
Because when your brand becomes invisible, a few things start to happen:

Not because your product is bad.
But because nothing about you is memorable enough to stick.

The brands that grow are rarely the quietest ones.

They’re the ones that show up clearly, repeatedly, and unapologetically.

And over time, that clarity compounds.
