After that, I worked in R&D for a few years, focusing on sustainable packaging for well-known brands and milk plants in Ludhiana, India. I loved solving challenges related to sustainability, especially packaging that had minimal environmental impact.

But life took a pause. After getting married and having a child, I stepped away from work for about six years. It was a time for personal growth and reflection.

High capacity numbers are lying to most Bio-CNG plant owners…

Most Bio-CNG plants love talking about peak capacity.

Very few talk about what actually matters after commissioning of a plant: 

Consistency.

Anyone can hit a high output on a good day.

But serious plants are measured by how predictable 
their yield is across weeks and seasons.

Here’s what I’ve seen repeatedly:

Peak gas numbers impress on paper
Variability quietly kills performance

And when daily output swings too much:

- Microbes stay under stress
- Operators keep firefighting
- O&M costs creep up and
-  Planning becomes guesswork

Globally, high-performing plants track coefficients of variation, not just average yield. 

A plant producing slightly less gas but with stable output often 
outperforms a higher-capacity plant over a year.

And the biggest driver of variability? 

Not the digester. 
Not the compressor. 
It’s inconsistent input quality.

So the harsh reality is: 

Mixed waste, plastic contamination, uneven slurry, all of it shows up downstream as “unexplainable” factors for gas fluctuations.

That’s exactly why mature plants obsess over what goes into the digester, 
not just what comes out.

Because capacity tells you what’s possible.
But variability tells you what’s sustainable.

If you want a plant that scales, finances well, and survives audits, 
start measuring stability, not just peaks.

Helping Businesses Transform Organic Waste into Renewable Energy for Compressed Biogas Plants (CBG) | Sales Leader at Dry Cake

If your pre-treatment system needs daily correction, something is fundamentally WRONG…

I’ve seen this one pattern repeat across plants that daily corrections slowly become normalised today.

But no Bio-CNG plant is designed to babysit every day.

When operators constantly adjust settings, 
manage blockages, or compensate for inconsistent slurry, 
the issue isn’t manpower or discipline anymore.

It’s the instability at the input stage.

Most digesters are designed to tolerate ±10–15% variation in feed quality.

Indian MSW routinely crosses that because plastics, 
grit, and moisture swings are not removed consistently.

That’s exactly why biology starts reacting:

❌ Microbial stress
❌ Rising O&M effort
❌ Fluctuating gas yield
❌ & silent efficiency loss

But pretreatment can make a major difference in this process.

That’s exactly why today plants in Europe run with minimal daily intervention, even with mixed waste streams.

India has recently commissioned 132 CBG plants producing ~920 TPD under SATAT in 2026…

On paper, that sounds like real progress.
But on the ground, the picture is quite different.

Because commissioning a plant is not the same as running it well.

In the last few years, I’ve seen a clear shift in conversations with plant owners.

Earlier, the focus used to be “How many plants came up?”

Now, the uncomfortable question is 
“How many are consistently performing?”

And performance doesn’t fail because of one big decision.
It slips due to small, ignored realities:

❌ Variable feedstock quality
❌ Plastic contamination in MSW
❌ Unstable slurry stressing the biology

These don’t show up in DPRs.
They show up after Day 1.

If we really want SATAT to succeed long-term, 
the industry has to mature beyond counting plants.

Pre-treatment quality, slurry consistency, and operational discipline matter far more than capacity announcements.

Because a plant that produces gas predictably 
is more valuable than five that struggle quietly.

Indeed, 132 plants is a milestone.

But the next phase will be defined by how many of them 
will still be running strong, year after year.

Because in the end, that’s the only metric that truly matters.

“Every SUGAR factory should seriously consider setting up a Bio-CNG plant.”

That’s exactly what an industry leader said openly at a recent STAI seminar.

And honestly, it needed to be said.

Today if you look at Europe, in countries like Switzerland, Bio-CNG plants exist every 10–20 km.

Not as pilot projects but as part of the core energy system.

They use local organic waste, convert it reliably, and 
reduce dependence on conventional fuels.

Now if you look at India, unlike many sectors chasing Bio-CNG, 
sugar factories already deal with what matters most:

Wet, organic waste streams - press mud, 
spent wash, other biodegradable residues.

On paper, this clearly looks like the ideal feedstock.
But on ground, here’s what I’ve seen over the years:

Even clean industrial wet waste can underperform 
if pre-treatment and slurry consistency are taken lightly.

Digestion doesn’t fail loudly.

It fails slowly when impurities creep in, 
when slurry quality fluctuates, when 
biology is stressed day after day.

Today the sugar industry has a real opportunity in 2026, not just to add another revenue line, but to build stable, predictable Bio-CNG operations.

Across mature markets, plants that succeed aren’t the biggest ones.

They’re the ones that respect the basics:

- Clean inputs 
- Disciplined pre-treatment, and 
- Protection of biology.

Bio-CNG for sugar factories isn’t a bold experiment anymore.

It’s rather a process decision.and process decisions decide performance.
