"I’m curious Ben, everybody touts comments as 'the magic' but I have yet to understand how comment impressions are useful beyond being seen. Is there some magic (hidden) analytics view that tells us how productive those impressions actually are?
 
Great question, David. We can look at comments as 'productive' in a few ways, and I don't consider comment impressions a metric for 'productive.'

First, comments create awareness - that you exist. That you have something of value to say.

Second, a thoughtful comment that advances the conversation can drive profile views. A well-built headline is essential as it provides context for your comment and creates initial interest to activate curiosity and a profile view.

Third, a solid comment provides a reference point for a connection request with a message (to the post author or other commenters) OR a DM if already connected or they have an open profile.

This is the magic – the 1:1 private conversation – the comment initiates the chain of events that build rapport and the higher likelihood that you can convert that public conversation into a private one over DM/call/Zoom. The comment is the foundation to build from."

*Fourth, a good comment thread can become a post. This post was generated from a comment exchange between David Bates and I earlier this week.

A post on it's own will only reach your connections and extended network depending on how the algorithms decides, then you have to wait for someone relevant to (maybe) engage with it, then you can start the public conversation in comments. This requires you to become a content creator instead of a collegial engager and isn't as scalable as commenting.

1)    Drop the goal focus. Engage people in person and on LinkedIn with curiosity – to learn, to share, to know. Building rapport and relationships should be the intent. Drop the goal focus for engaging others and it will feel human and energizing.

2)    Get seen before you need to be seen. Familiarity builds trust in the job search process. Strangers rarely do favors for strangers; so don’t be a stranger. Engaging and building relationships with others is sooooo much easier when there is no pressure. Get seen as a human, a professional, an expert, or a peer and NOT a job seeker.

People help people.
People hire people.
Engaging people is human.
Engage people in a human way.
You will be seen.
You will not fail.
