In 1717, Sir Isaac Newton was tasked with setting the exchange rate of gold to silver. 

At the time, he was the Master of the Royal Mint of Great Britain. He decided to fix the exchange rate to the ratio of the world’s total physical supply of both metals.

His ratio? 15.5 to 1.

For every 1 ounce of gold, the world had roughly 15.5 ounces of silver. This exchange rate made it so that the value of all the gold in the world was equal to the value of all the silver. 

This was roughly the exchange rate for most of human history, as can be seen in the graphic below.

Today, that balance is broken. With gold at $4,750 and silver at $94, one ounce of gold is worth 50 ounces of silver. If the exchange rate was to revert to Newton’s exchange rate, an ounce of silver would be worth $306.

However, industry has been using up the world’s supply of silver. Silver is the best conductor of electricity, so it is used in countless electronic components.

Companiesmarketcap dot com implies that the ratio of above ground supply now sits at 8 to 1 (see graphic below), approximately half of what it was in Sir Issac Newton’s time. 

Furthermore, Keith Neumeyer, the CEO of First Majestic Silver, confirms that silver is mined at a ratio of 8:1 to gold today. In other words, this ratio of available gold/silver is unlikely to change anytime soon. 

If the gold to silver exchange rate was 8:1, silver would be $594 per ounce. This assumes no change in the price of gold.

We are currently living through the early stages of the third electrical revolution, and silver is a vital component. There have been times in world history where all the silver was worth more than all the gold. One could make an argument that silver is more useful than gold today. That would support a gold to silver exchange rate even less than 8:1. 

Current silver price: $94.60.

Exactly...US Debt, etc. are driving gold, but never let a headline go without adding some spin.  lol.

I disagree with this headline from CNN.
Gold is not rising because of Trump. It is rising because the US has $39 trillion in debt, $2 trillion in annual deficits, 25% of tax revenue goes to interest payments and Congress refuses to stop. They thus need to go through monetary debasement. This is not a bug. It is a feature of the system. And store of values are one of the way to protect purchasing power. 

By the way, Europe and Japan have similar debt and spending problems. Gold is at record highs against every currency, not just the dollar.

Break down systems to thoroughly understand them. Disregard the rhetoric and instead do your own research. What is true? Ignore opinions, most experts, norms, the news, etc. Focus on what is true via the laws of physics, math, nature, and history. Hint: determine the power in the system - who has it, how is it being applied, does it shift and if so, how? Etc. That will lead you to truly understanding almost all systems.

- the bond price of the 30-year Treasury is down 50% and JGB down 45% peak-to-trough in 2020s. This great bond bear (on new world order, debasement, populism, fiscal excess…) was the catalyst for the great first half of 2020s "Anything But Bonds (ABB)" bull in US tech, EU/Japan banks & gold; Emerging Markets and small cap will be the new ABB bulls in the second half of the 2020s.
- the ongoing Japan debasement and weak Asian FX, is spurring big capital outflows into US & EU assets (e.g. Korean retail $100bn into US stocks); AUDJPY>110 = multi-year breakout to 35-year high = risk-stays-on; but a failure (on BoJ, intervention) = peak of “weak Asia FX-big outflow” virtuous cycle.

Near-tern market indicators: the 3Ps. Q1 zeitgeist is  “rotate don't retreat”:
- That's because big tops coincide with max bullish Positioning
- Everyone expecting Profit boom
- But also Policy tightening
2026 isn’t 2018 or 2022, as policy is easing bigly via Fed cuts, tax cuts, tariff cuts, plus $0.6tn Fed/Trump QE)… It's also why no one is retreating until 30-year Treasury yield above 5.1% (panic level of Oct’23 & May’25) signaling tighter money.

But while the selloff in US bonds is still contained, Japan - where ABB has never been more potent- can't say the same, and the surge in long-term yields in Japan to the highest since 1999 (30-year hit 3.9%) means peak-to-trough the price of 30-year JGB down 45% thus far in 2020s. While the first half of the 2020s saw a bond bear market which sparked an ABB bull in gold, EU/JP banks, US tech/Mag 7; H2 2020s will see small/mid cap stocks and Emerging Markets new beneficiaries of ABB… same as in 1970s when wage & price controls, pro-cyclical fiscal/monetary policies, US$ debasement (end of Bretton Woods) caused peak of Nifty 50 bull market in 1972 and gold (1971-74) replaced by small cap (1975-77) as best asset to own. Hartnett's favorite beneficiaries of ABB in 2026 are GLD, GNR, EEM, MDY, IJR.

Silver just touched $100 an ounce, and gold continues its march toward $5,000 (please see charts below).
As we’ve previously discussed, key drivers fueling this momentum include:
• Strategic Diversification: Central banks and official institutions are steadily pivoting away from traditional safe havens, albeit still at the margin. While these players are inherently slower-moving, their shift provides relatively solid price support.
• Institutional Adoption: We are seeing more buy-in from institutional investors, many of whom are now integrating metals directly into model portfolios.
• The "Resident vs. Tourist" Dynamic: These “long-term resident investors" are, as you would expect, joined by "shorter-term tourists"—volatile speculative buyers looking to ride a wave which has been enormously rewarding.

Unfortunately, this has been going on since the dawn of time.  Go back in history and you will see even more wealth discrepancies.  Ancient Egyptian pharaohs and their inner circle, < 1% of the populace; their wealth > 99%.  Other empires throughout history...similar, .  But, I agree it could be better...what would it take?  How do you reward risk takers and still keep it less lopsided?

Yesterday our friend Tom Keene asked a simple, yet poignant question: "What went wrong with capitalism?"

A PCA-style answer that ranked the responses by their respective eigenvalues would likely render:

1. The ability of wealthy elites like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel to purchase incomprehensibly more political influence than their single vote allows.

2. The unfair treatment of capital income relative to labor income in the morally corrupt federal tax code that is derived from the political influence purchased by wealthy elites in feature #1. 

3. The combination of socialism via bailouts for wealthy individuals and politically connected institutions vs. capitalism via creative destruction for everyone and everything else that is also derived from the political influence purchased by wealthy elites in feature #1. 

The key takeaway is that capitalism + plutocracy is not capitalism; it's moral, social, and economic corruption. 

The economic game is so rigged that the people who rig it in their favor don't even try to hide it anymore; they have front-row seats to presidential inaugurations.

As a former member of the bottom 0.001% of our broken capitalist society, I pray that this Fourth Turning is the catalyst to unrig it for the many millions of struggling families.

So difficult to get accurate inflation data...each source seems to have their own math..

The government is going to run the US economy as hot as possible. 

Last year, they realized it would be nearly impossible to balance the budget, so the next best option is to grow the country out of the problem.

Thankfully, the rise of artificial intelligence has helped spur an acceleration in GDP growth, with the Atlanta Fed estimating Q4 GDP could be as high as 5.4%.

That is a very big number.

But this GDP growth is not exclusively coming from AI. Adam Kobeissi points out that “US M2 money supply jumped +$1.65 trillion in 2025, to a record $26.7 trillion.”

Adam goes on to highlight that “this marks the largest annual increase since 2021 and the 3rd consecutive annual gain. Since mid-2023, M2 has risen +$3.7 trillion, driven by rapidly rising bank deposits and money market fund inflows. This means money supply has grown +$116 billion per month over this period. By comparison, from January 2022 to April 2023, M2 contracted -$450 billion, or -$28 billion a month.”

So GDP is growing and the administration is telling us they are going to run the economy hot, which means you would expect inflation to be surging higher.

 But that is not what is happening.
