I gave Claude a folder, two spreadsheets, and a vendor contract. It reconciled my vendor spend, flagged contract risks, and built consistent dashboard I can reuse every month. All in 15 minutes. 

Last week I told you finance jobs are shrinking. 

Today, I'll show you what to do about it.

One prompt that kicked off the entire AP reconciliation. Cowork ingested a new vendor contract, cross-referenced 273 invoices against 14 contracts, and flagged spending happening without agreements.

Then we turned those outputs into a dashboard you can rebuild every month with the same look, the same KPIs, and the same layout, just with fresh numbers.

The whole thing took less than 15 minutes to set up.

Goldman Sachs is working with Anthropic for six months to build AI agents that automate accounting. Their CIO said he was surprised at how well it handled the work.

- Parsing data. 
- Applying rules. 
- Exercising judgment.

Let's dive in.

Tech company Block laid off 4,000 employees (nearly half) yesterday because of AI. And their stock surged 24%. Why?

The bookkeeping. The matching. The copying data from one system to another. The rebuilding the same report every month from scratch. 

AI doesn't struggle with this. It excels at it.

You closed the books last month.

You'll close them again in a few weeks. 

The same reconciliations. The same journal entries. The same spreadsheet you rebuilt from scratch because last month's version didn't carry forward cleanly.

You already know this isn't sustainable. 

You've known for a while.

You tried ChatGPT once. Maybe twice. It hallucinated a number. You closed the tab and went back to the spreadsheet that at least gets the math right.

Your inbox is full of vendors promising "autonomous finance." 

You sat through one of those demos. 

The chatbot couldn't reconcile a bank statement.

The loop has started.

Block proved it. Goldman confirmed it. The market is pricing it in.

I didn't write this to scare people. I wrote it because the gap between what finance leaders believe and what they're actually doing has never been wider.

CFOs try new AI tools and it kind of works out. But nobody knows what to do next. That’s the story I heard everywhere. A pilot gets launched. Shows promise. But the data isn’t clean enough. The team doesn’t have the skills. 

Nobody owns it.

So it dies quietly in a folder nobody opens.

Here's what's wild about this.

The Gartner numbers tell the same story. AI adoption in finance jumped from 37% to 58% in one year. Then moved one percentage point to 59% the next.

One percentage point.

CFOs say AI is critical to their future. 

The belief is there. The follow-through isn't.

I asked a CFO who actually broke through this wall what he did differently.
He said: "We didn't do anything exotic. We just didn't stop after the first pilot."

That's it. That's the whole thing.

He picked one workflow.

Gave one person ownership. Set a weekly check-in. Kept going when the data was messy. Kept going when the team complained. Kept going when it wasn't perfect.

12 months later his close went from eight days to three.

The CFOs who are ahead right now don't have better tools. They don't have bigger budgets. They don't have cleaner data. They just didn't stop.

The gap in AI adoption isn't between believers and skeptics.

It's between starters and finishers.
