I’ve worked with tens of thousands of professionals on their careers—whether as a hiring manager, senior executive, founder, or now through Teal, where we’ve helped over 3 million people grow their careers with confidence. From reviewing resumes to building hiring systems, I’ve seen every side of the job search—and I’m on a mission to make it more transparent, equitable, and empowering.

That’s why I started Teal in early 2020. We’re building a career growth platform that uses AI and modern technology to simplify the job search, personalize the experience, and give individuals the same tools companies use to manage talent. We’ve helped people land new roles, negotiate raises, and gain clarity in their career paths—at scale.

With over 20 years as a technology practitioner and entrepreneur, I’ve led across product and service businesses, from B2B enterprise to consumer applications. I co-founded CASE, later acquired by WeWork, where I held executive roles including Chief Product Officer and Chief Growth Officer. I helped scale global operations—opening over 2 million square feet of space per month, often at 60–80% occupancy—and built products and teams that touched every part of the business.

Throughout my career, I’ve built productivity tools, physical products, and large-scale consumer search experiences. I’ve hired thousands of people and shaped the policies and systems behind how companies build culture and grow talent.

👁️ Your resume gets reviewed in 3 distinct phases.
Most people only optimize for one:

In my experience reviewing resumes, there are three distinct phases: SKIM, SCAN, and STUDY.

Understanding these phases is the difference between getting ignored and getting interviewed.

🚫 Phase 1: SKIM (under 2 seconds)

This is instant rejection. A payments clerk applying for a software engineering role. Zero evidence of relevant experience. Most recruiters can make this call in under two seconds.

How to pass: Make it immediately obvious you're qualified. Your target title, recent roles, and key skills need to match the requirements.

👀 Phase 2: SCAN (15-20 seconds)

F-pattern reading. They scan job titles, look for keywords, check your skills section. I go straight to skills to see if the tools and capabilities are there, then skim bullets.

How to pass: Put relevant keywords and skills on the first page. Lead with your strongest accomplishments. Make it easy to scan and impossible to miss your qualifications.

📖 Phase 3: STUDY (a few minutes)

They read most of your bullets. They click your links—portfolio for designers, GitHub for engineers, LinkedIn for everyone else. You've earned real consideration.

How to pass: Bullets need to be compelling, specific, and results-oriented. Links need to work and showcase your best work. Content quality matters most here.

Here's the thing: this isn't a checklist. It happens subconsciously. Each phase is a gate.

There's no guarantee you'll get the interview even at the STUDY phase. But at least you've given yourself the best shot.
