30+ days of writing LinkedIn hooks… didn’t improve, average at best… so I made a 10-min practise routine.

A few weeks ago, I realised how important the hooks were and how it is 80% of the post itself, so I looked at my hooks to see if they were good or not. After staring at them for hours without being biased and comparing them to other writers, I realised they were awful. I wanted to write better hooks, but I just didn’t know what makes a good hook.

So I went back and studied the basics and made a 10-min practise routine with 4 principles for every hook I write:

1. Evoke pain, fear and desire

Good hooks tap into something people already care about. My hooks only gave curiosity, and for someone who doesn’t have too much authority right now, I can’t build the curiosity needed. Most big creators can use curiosity hooks because they have that die-hard fan base.

Pain = Struggling to get clients

Fear = Never being able to achieve $10k/month

Desire = improving your writing

If the reader doesn’t feel anything, they’ll keep scrolling

1. Write from personal experience

Anyone can give advice online, but personal experience is harder to ignore. The thing is, with most people, they will trust someone who has 100,000 followers more than someone who has 1,000 followers. People will trust you more if you can show what you’ve done yourself, your successes or failures, than a random person telling others what to do without trying it.

For example, instead of writing:

“Here’s how to improve your hooks”

Try to write something like:

“I tried X for 10 days, here’s what happened when I tried it”

1. Use numbers and symbols

I used to write hooks that were just full of text but I either didn’t evoke enough emotions, or people would skim through it because it didn’t catch their eyes. Numbers and symbols break the pattern of sentences full of text. In a feed where 99% of what we see are letters, things like:

Naturally catch the eyes as they create a visual pause in a sentence, which will make people stop skimming and scrolling, even for a second. It’s such a small detail people don’t see, but it grabs attention better than a written sentence.

1. Keep the language simple

You need to write hooks and write in general like you’re speaking to a friend. There’s no point writing like you're some sophisticated billionaire because people won’t care or feel connected.

If I have to reread my own hook for me to understand it, I know I have already lost the reader. So writing in simple language always wins because it’s easier to understand. Clear beats professional or clever writing every time.

I’m still learning, but since I started to implement these rules into my hooks, my posts have been doing better. And the best thing is, it only takes 10 minutes for anyone to implement these rules into their hooks as well. After 30+ days of bad hooks, they’re slowly getting better.

9/10 writers overcomplicate their posts… Matt Barker keeps it simple: Stories, Simple Writing & 1 Clear Idea

I’ve been paying more attention to other LinkedIn writers lately, like Matt. You know, he’s a big creator, is transparent, shows his wins, and clearly is a good writer, so I thought he’s one of the best people to learn from and analyse.

After looking at some of his posts, I noticed 3 things he does differently from most writers.

1. Simple Writing
Most writers try to sound impressive, like they’re trying to sell themselves in an interview using big words no one knows and acting ‘professional’.

Matt doesn’t do any of that.

He keeps everything very simple, his sentences are short, he writes like he’s just having a casual conversation with a friend, and his advice is clear enough that you can skim his posts, pick the advice out and remember it so it actually sticks in your head and doesn’t forget it after a couple of mins. Simple writing is so much easier to understand, which makes people keep reading his posts.

2. Stories before advice
A lot of writers just jump straight into tips, but Matt normally starts with a story first. He talks about something that happened, noticed or a quick personal story to set the mood and make you imagine the story in your head. Then he explains the lesson he needs to. This pulls in the reader instantly, and then they carry on reading because the advice afterwards is what makes the post useful.

3. 1 Clear Idea
I see so many beginner writers get this wrong (I used to do it myself). They tried to fit in a whole book of ideas into one post, but Matt usually focuses on just one lesson/takeaway. It makes the reader instantly understand what he’s on about, delivers the promise the hook gives, and the reader can actually remember his post because of it. It makes it so much easier to follow.

After looking at his posts for a couple of hours, it made me understand that to be a good writer on LinkedIn, you don’t need to overcomplicate it, all you need is your post to be simple, story-driven and focused on 1 clear idea.

Nike ads are 10x more memorable than writers on LinkedIn… because 9/10, they focus on the story more than the content.

The other day, I watched a couple of Nike ads. I got them coming up on YouTube whilst watching a video, and it instantly reeled me in to the point where I stopped watching the video and started watching more Nike ads. I was just wondering why their ads and marketing were getting stuck in my head.

My first thought was their budget, creatives and their content writers, but after watching a few of them, I realised that Nike pretty much never talks about their product. How can a company not talk about their products but still get their ads in everyone's head? Especially the World Cup ones.

The more I watched, I realised they focus on the story more than anything else.

Most of their ads (especially the older ones) look like they’re shot on a basic phone. But they really dive deep into the athlete struggling, failing and pushing through it within 10 seconds. They give you this whole story without explaining much in such a short time. Now, when you think of their product, you think of that one athlete who went through the journey.
It made me think about my own writing.

Most beginner writers (even including me) focus mainly on making the hook, sentences, flow, formatting, etc., better. But no one remembers the content of that. People remember stories more. I can write a 4-sentence post giving you a tip, and you’ll forget it tomorrow. But if I add a story behind it, you’ll connect it to my writing.

So if I had to start again, I would explain to myself that stories are more important than the content alone.

Which is why Nike ads are 10x more memorable than writers on LinkedIn because 9/10 they focus on the story more than the content.

Most of my writing days look like this:

2 hours writing = 1 post done and 1 deleted

When starting, I thought the process would feel exciting. You know, writing the content out, making the writing so good that no one can pass on it, posting it and seeing my business grow. But the reality looked very different from the surface people see on LinkedIn.

Most days weren’t a creative burst where I could write 4 posts in a couple of hours. Most days, I would write a hook, read it multiple times, delete it, write another version of it and then delete that. Sometimes, I’d rewrite the same paragraph 4-5 times before I am happy, and it actually makes sense.

The progress felt slow, and I thought I was doing something wrong, like I was doing all of this work, but my writing skill wasn’t improving whatsoever. And to add salt to the wound, I’d see creators on LinkedIn who just started writing content, and their progress and business are booming. It would hit my ego so hard that sometimes I would just stop for the day.

But after doing it for a while, I realised that writing is a refined skill.

Good writing starts badly, then the writer edits over and over again until it’s good to go. Of course, some creators’ writing skills are better than mine, so it doesn’t take them that much time to refine their content, but they still rewrite it.

So now, when my writing sessions look like this:
2 hours writing = 1 post done and 1 deleted

I know I’m doing the real work because that slow, frustrating process is how good writers go to where they are now.

Most people want success in 12 months.

Gary Vaynerchuk talks about building for 12+ years.

I only discovered Gary a couple of months ago, but I got hooked on his stuff instantly and read his book online called ‘Twelve and a Half’. It felt like a refreshing change from most of the advice you hear on social media nowadays.

The book talks about emotional skills needed to succeed in business and life so things like patience, self-awareness, and accountability. The main thing he talks about is the uncomfortable kind of patience, where you work on something for years before it actually pays off.

And when you look at his career, it makes a lot of sense.

He spent years growing his family’s wine business. Then he spent years creating daily content. Then he spent even more years building companies. And none of this became a success overnight.

And he owes it to his soft skills, as they aren’t ‘nice to have’, they’re critical for the long run.

It’s so different from people now as they think the opposite. They want fast growth, fast success, and fast results, but realistically, it’s not that simple.

They see the road to success as a straight line. They think that just by being consistent, everything will work out. If it were that simple, everyone would be successful with a business. In reality, there are potholes, closed roads, and little detours you take and have to figure out to get on the right path. And the soft skills will help you get on the right path to success.

Gary’s book gave me a different perspective as it ignores most of the noise and tells you to play the long game, even if it takes 10+ years. It made me realise, of course, I want to succeed in 12 months, but I should probably be building for 12+ years, and that is okay.

AI isn’t replacing writers… It’s replacing BAD writers… which means 10× more shit LinkedIn posts.

1 year ago, when AI tools started blowing up, I honestly thought writers were finished. Yeah, we had Chatgpt which was cool, but they just kept releasing more. They could even write a post within seconds.

You want a LinkedIn post? Done in 3 seconds. 

You need an email? Done in 2.

They even got one for websites now, it’s nuts.

It sort of put me off my goal, which was to get so good at writing that I could eventually turn it into a business. But every time they released a new global AI tool that doesn’t need to cost money, I asked myself, “What’s the actual point of learning this skill anymore?” If a machine can write faster than me, how do I even compete with that?

But I started to see how people were using these AI tools. They would copy a prompt, generate content, and then post without thinking about it. And the more content that was published, the more you realise how shit AI writing is. It doesn’t create good writing; it creates fast writing, and most people use it to produce more average content.

AI does create 10x more writing, but it’s average writing that's just generic. And when the rise of AI writing flooded LinkedIn, you could tell what was written by AI or by a human, and that’s when great writers stood out even more.

AI isn’t replacing writers in general; it’s replacing bad writers who use it to generate generic posts with no human touch to them. The writers who focus on thinking, storytelling, clarity and having that human touch will stand out more than ever.

I came to the gym for a quick workout… 45mins later… I’ve spent 10mins of that picking a song for my top set.

I’m literally just about to do my top set on squats. I literally will have 2x my body chilling on my back, but I can’t do it until I have the RIGHT song on.

Doesn’t matter what exercise, if I don’t have the right song, then I’m not doing it. Now I’ve spent nearly a quarter of my time picking a song.

I came to the gym to get a workout in. But apparently, I’m here to perfect my playlist with my best songs for my top set.

I tried Alex Hormozi's 'Grind Culture' advice... 12-hour days. My writing got worse... it focused on volume > skill

3 months ago, I decided to take LinkedIn seriously, and at the perfect time, Alex Hormozi's clips kept popping up on my Instagram. I kept seeing his business advice about grinding nonstop, working 12-hour days, and doing so much work that it would be impossible for you to fail. So I took his ‘grind culture advice’ and went straight into never missing a day of posting, sending more DMs and connections, and outworking everyone in my field. Pretty much working so much that I didn’t even have time to just sit and think for a second.

I thought that was the reason for me not getting any clients. So following it blindly, I thought, if I post nonstop, eventually my clients will come to me, and I wouldn’t need to worry about anything think that my writing would get better, my business would flourish because I worked harder.

But do you know what happened?

My writing got worse. My skill stayed at the same level, but my post was shit. I rushed ideas so I could get more out, I made content that literally helped no one, and my posts were so unclear that sentences didn’t even link to the next one. It was pretty much random words on a LinkedIn post, all because I was focused on doing more work to have more output.

I realised after 3 months that writing is a skill.
And skills don’t improve just because you repeat the same thing over and over again.

They improve when:

 - You study the skill to learn from the best in the niche.
 - Analyse good writing and understand why it is good writing.
 - Slow down enough to see what is working and what’s not.

After I stopped posting because the ‘grind culture’ told me to and finally started to learn the skill properly, the writing all became clearer and better. The ‘Grind Culture’ works… ONLY after you build the skill and know how to do the skill to a good level. Until then… grinding more just means you do average work at a higher volume.

Now I work maybe 4 hours a day, and my writing has improved a lot, and I focus on getting better at writing than just dumping shit on LinkedIn. But the best thing about it… I don’t feel guilty about just chilling for an hour to have some nice time with my family.

45-minutes at my desk  = 1 idea

30-minute walk = 30 content ideas

Let’s be honest, coming up with ideas for a post can be hard at times.

Sometimes you’re in flow state and everything is so easy,

And sometimes, you couldn’t even think of an idea to save your life.

That was one of the hardest parts of posting on LinkedIn for me, actually coming up with ideas that are good.

The longer I sat at my desk trying to write a post, the worse my writing got. 

It made me not want to write, giving me ‘writer's block’ even when I have done nothing.

1 day, I was just so fed up that I just left and went on a 10 min walk.

I didn’t even bring my phone, I just left. 

Something weird happened when I came back.

My writing was just clearer. 

Better Ideas.

Natural writing and angle.

Felt less forced.

I kept repeating this when I was stuck, and it helps so much.

If I’m stuck, I don’t sit there for 30-45 mins fighting my brain. I walk for 5-10 mins.

If your ideas feel heavy.

Close your laptop.

Go outside.

And just go for a walk.

Your best ideas might be waiting around the corner…

3 mistakes beginner writers make on LinkedIn are not being themselves, sharing their learnings and writing clearly.

When I first started trying to get clients on LinkedIn, I thought the solution was simple. Everyone says to post content consistently, and the inbound clients will slowly come in. People on LinkedIn seem to do it, and I always see LinkedIn posts saying stuff like ‘Last week, I got 3 inbound leads from content alone’, so it shouldn’t be too hard, right?

I was wrong…

My content wasn’t getting any traction, my writing felt worse than average and worst of all, no one reached out to me. I realised the basics of writing content were something I wasn’t doing, and if I don’t master the fundamentals, nothing will go my way.

After doing more research, I found the key 3 fundamentals, which are:

1. Be yourself

Look, I know AI can bang out 5 posts for you in 2 seconds, but they’re shit. None of them are going to be remembered and get you anywhere. If you can’t be yourself in your writing, no ones going to trust you to solve any of their problems.

2. Learning how to write clearly

How can anyone trust you if they can’t understand anything from your writing? People prefer simple writing, and simplicity gets you farther than you think. When you write content out, write like you’re speaking to a mate, not to a board of founders that earn £5mil revenue.

3. Sharing what you’re learning

This goes against what the ‘gurus’ say on LinkedIn, but if you’re a beginner writer, don’t fake who you are.

Document the lessons you’ve learnt or are learning along the way. It shows authenticity and trust, and people trust others with flaws, not a perfect robot.

Once I started to focus on these 3 things, my writing and content improved drastically.

So before you chase any clients on LinkedIn, make sure you sort these 3 mistakes out. The fundamentals matter more than any of the advanced stuff you will learn in the future.

I realised I was impressing my peers with my content… not attracting clients… that mistake cost me 5 months.

I wanted to sound legit when I first started writing content.

The goal was to get other writers to read my post and be like:
“Yeah, this guy definitely knows what he’s talking about.”

But the real goal wasn’t to be praised; it was really to get clients.

I wanted paid work, real opportunities for me to leave my job and go all in on something I enjoyed.

But if I’m being honest…
My peers cheer, but clients are the ones who buy.

The content that impresses other writers isn’t the content that will make business owners think:
“I need this.”

My growth was slow because I was writing to prove something and not to solve anything.

So I did just that.
I started writing for people that I wanted to work with.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t become an overnight celebrity or anything.
But the right people started to pay attention,
And that matters more than my peers’ approval ever will.

So the only advice I can give out is from someone who learned too late.

Write to your clients and not to impress people who do the same thing as you.

Then you won’t waste 5 months as I did.

“5 Testimonials”, “$10k/month in 3 months”, “FULLY BOOKED”… Seeing this on LinkedIn made me feel 10 steps behind everyone as a beginner writer.

Every time I opened the app, some post like that would slap me in the face.

Not only one of them, it would be multiple on feed. One after the other.

It seemed like everyone was winning and I was the only one that was missing the slice of the pie.

It made me want to quit before I even started. I always thought I was too late, or I wasn’t as good as these people.

The feeling weighed my shoulders down as a beginner writer.

But as time went on, I realised LinkedIn is just a place that shows your highlights, not the quiet reps you have to put in. (Also some people blatanly lie to build authority. Bit weird).

Some of the stuff you see on LinkedIn isn’t brand new. Sometimes they recycle wins, use random numbers and only show certain wins from their career.

And it sort of changed the way I view LinkedIn.

I know I’m nowhere near these people because my momentum is slowly compounding over time.

Eventually, I will be there.

The feeling of being late is all part of the progress. One day, the feeling will go away and I will be where I wanted to be at the start of my LinkedIn journey.

And that is okay.

I just simply need to carry on and not let it get to me.

So if you’re a writer and have had the same feeling as this, just keep working and compounding those reps. It will work out and the ‘late’ feeling will eventually go away.

But posting twice in 1 day still scares me

I posted consistently for 6 months… made $0/month.

That was my LinkedIn reality.

When I started, I was getting the usual:
Likes
Comments
Good impressions

And all of this gave me false hope.

I genuinely believed that within 6 months, I’d have a consistent flow of clients.
I had people liking my content, so eventually they’d hire me, right?

But the main problem I didn’t realise was that the people who were engaging weren’t buyers.

They were people like me:
Beginner entrepreneurs,
Other writers,
Other people are trying to “Make it”

It messed with my head a little, and I started to think I wasn’t cut out for this.

But on a random day, I saw someone on LinkedIn explain that DMs were the main reason people get hired on LinkedIn.

Not Likes or comments.
DMs.

I had the engagement at the start, yes, but the authority in the DMs was non-existent.

So I did a U-turn.

I started to shift towards a certain buyer and started targeting DMs.

6 months in… still 0 clients.

But what I do have is a path and more clarity, so slowly and surely I will get there.

If you’re in the same boat as me and are doubting yourself within the first 3 months…
Don’t stress, honestly, you’re pretty early, so just keep going, it’ll make more sense later on.

I’ve train 5x a week for 3 years straight.

The discipline followed into my writing.

All I wanted was a better body.
A body that I worked hard for and everywhere I go, it shows off for itself.

I didn’t realise that doing this was building my standards up.

Don’t get me wrong, the first 6 months, I was inconsistent.

Making up excuses to not workout.
Cheating on my diet.
All of the above.

I got annoyed to the point where I forced myself to workout 5x a week as a non-negotiable.

And I kept it up for 3 years straight (and hopefully more).

After 3 years of showing up no matter what…
My brain stopped accepting excuses.

If I can train when I’m tired,
I can write when I don’t feel creative.

If I can push through hard reps,
I can push through blank pages.

Discipline became an habit in every area.

Now when I write, it’s like second nature.

I write no matter what circumstance i’m under because my body and mind literally won’t let me slack off.

All because I wanted to build a better body at 19.

Having discipline to go to the gym 5x a week has made sure I write everyday.

And I can’t wait to see it go into other sections of my life as well.

I thought everyone in the gym used to judge me, so I almost stopped training.

I felt out of place when I was younger. Seeing all of these people in the gym with these big ole muscles and more confident than me.

And even after training for 3+ years, I still feel like a beginner when I go.
The main goal was to get fitter. The basics: lose the excess bodyfat, get some muscles, and fill my frame. But most of all… enjoy it.

But every time I went, I thought the same thing: “What if everyone’s watching me?” (proper main character syndrome)

I thought people would take the piss out of the weights I was lifting, bad form and so on, to the point where I nearly stopped going at the start. If I'm being honest, it played on my mind for the whole first year.

But I soon realised that everyone was focused on themselves, their own progress.

The thing I feared the most didnt even exist… They’re there to better themselves, not judge others, and if they did, they would come over to help, not judge.

And the day I realised that was the day when the gym stopped feeling intimidating (I also think about how many people in the gym now, think the same as I did, and even maybe think I might be judging them)

Miss 1 workout = Progress stays the same

Miss 1 LinkedIn Post = World feels like it’s falling apart.

I missed a workout this week, and all it did was give my body more rest.

I didn’t lose any muscle or lose all of my progress.
I simply just miss 1 workout out of the hundreds I’ve done.
And I need to get back on my plan tomorrow onwards.

1 missed post on LinkedIn is the same thing.

It happens.
It doesn’t mean all of your progress is gone.
It just means I need to get back to posting consistently tomorrow onwards.

What would hurt your progress is…
Overthinking it instead of showing up again.

Just keep going, one missed workout or post won’t hurt

Like, AI was writing it pretty much.

I used the whole 200-word a post and tried to match it, making me edit sentences 5x-10x each.
Just to make it ‘sound better’ or ‘sound smarter’.

I did this because I had a simple target in mind:
Grow my LinkedIn business, get a stupid amount of leads, and look credible.

So every post took near enough 1 hour to write, which burned me out faster than ever.

I started to look at everyone else's content and guess what I found out…
No one actually sounded like that; they all sounded clear, straight to the point, and themselves.

The struggle was real, and because I was overediting every sentence, it locked my growth and made me stop posting because it ‘wasn’t good enough.’

So I stopped using their information and started to write how I would talk to a friend.
In shorter sentences,
Language I would use every day,
And clearer thoughts and writing.

And everything started to feel easy. I didn’t burn out, and I started to actually see some results.
Nothing special, but small wins that helped me mentally.

It’s such a stupid mistake, but everyone who starts makes the same one, it seems.
You just need to make sure you get on the right path.

Now, writing comes easily to me; I don’t care if I use slang or language I actually use daily, and my business is slowly getting to where I want it to be.

So don’t sound smart and edit your posts 5x-10x, just write how you speak, and it will sound better, connect more, and you won’t burn out.

6 months in… 0 Leads and 0 DMs.

And I genuinely thought about quitting

For 6 months, I posted consistently.

And I mean 5x a week, no doubt about it.

I tried so hard to sound like a ‘real writer’

Using AI,

Well structured,

Anything that made me sound inhuman, pretty much.

AND… it got me nothing.

No inbound leads, not a lot of likes or anything.

I couldn’t be proud of a single part of my content.

I didn’t even think or analyse it, I just kept posting.

When something flopped, I blamed everything else other than me:

“It has to be the algorithm”

“It has to be because my market is too saturated”

“It has to be that I am not lucky”

Just bullshit

So I stopped and instantly thought about quitting.

I was looking at my posts one day and thought about what actually went wrong with them.

I started actually analysing (proper genius idea I know)

My content was ass, and I started to talk like myself, and finally my posts started to get attraction.

Nothing went viral but…

My content improved, and conversations were on their way

Month 6 almost made me quit and stop everything.

Month 7 is when I started to make the shift.

I haven’t gotten to where I want to be just yet, but now I know how to learn from my failure and keep going.

I wasted 30 days posting on LinkedIn

Because I didn’t track 2 things - Profile Views and DMs

I thought discipline was enough to make it work on LinkedIn.
You know the whole post daily, trust the process, and never give up sort of mindset.

So that’s literally what I did for 30 days.

The main goal was to get traction and all of it.
Engagement, profile views, impressions and eventually… clients.

So I thought volume alone would get me there no matter what.

But after the 30 days of doing so, I couldn’t answer a simple question:
“What is working and what’s not?”

Some posts were doing great, others not so much.

But I didn’t know why; I was simply repeating the same steps over and over again.

I felt like I was wasting time, and it was true.

I stopped that whole discipline act and decided to track 2 things:
1. Profile views.
2. DMs I got from each piece of content.

That’s it.

I didn’t need to go viral to make it big on LinkedIn.
I needed the signals from people that would actually show me who’s interested or not in my content.

Once I tracked those 2 things, I stopped wasting time.

Posts got clearer.
Hooks got sharper.
Thinking got better.

I’m still learning, but I'm not guessing anymore.
