15 years ago. January 10th, 2011. London. 

My first day in professional B2B sales.

No playbook. No shortcuts.

“Here is your phone. Here is your computer. Here is an RFP. Read it, you will know all the questions and answers. Any questions?”

Then came conversations, rejection, learning, and repetition.

Today, 15 years later, across different industries, products, and markets, a few lessons clearly stand out. They are the ones that actually got me to where I am today.

1. Mindset beats skillset

Skills can be taught.
Mindset cannot be faked.

How you think about rejection, value, and responsibility shows up in every single conversation.

2. To sell is to serve

Real sales does not start with persuasion.

It starts with understanding, listening, challenging when needed, and helping customers make better decisions, even if that decision is not you.

3. B2B sales is about pain. Almost always

Nobody buys complex B2B solutions for pleasure.

They buy because something hurts. Revenue leakage. Risk. Inefficiency. Missed growth.

No pain, no deal.

4. Who you work for matters more than where you work, especially early on

The logo on your business card is less important than the people around you.

Find someone who pushes you, challenges you, and actually invests in your growth. It's much more than just a "job". 
Call this your internal mentor.

Later in your career, add external mentors.
Different perspectives matter.

5. Reward yourself once in a while

Sales is a demanding profession.
Mentally, emotionally, and often physically.

Enjoy the wins. Celebrate progress.

Sometimes that reward is as "simple" as a box of 007 truffles.

Still learning. Still refining the craft.

On to the next 15 years.
