You know how entrepreneurs struggle with everything, everywhere, all at once? Yep. So do I.

Given the fact that I am now old enough to remember the comet that killed the dinosaurs, I've made so many wild mistakes across so many industries and so many attempts to be an adult, that I figured that I had better be honest about it. Firstly, because someone, somewhere might have photos to prove what I did in the 90s. Secondly, because age comes with a certain level of "don't give a damn" that I am enjoying leveraging.

So what do I do?

1. Create a lot of content online because I enjoy it and I am an attention-seeking show pony.
2. Train organisations in digital skills, AI adoption and speaking confidence.
3. Train individuals in all those same things in-person and online.
4. Buy distressed retail and food/bev businesses, fix them and grow them.
5. Train small business owners Australia-wide on behalf of Meta AU/NZ.
6. Deliver digital advisory services for the ASBAS Digital Solutions program.
7. Deliver an innovation and entrepreneurship program for Darwin Innovation Hub.
8. Write long lists of things that I do.

It has been nearly two weeks since the tragedy in Crans-Montana.

The shock may have faded from the headlines, but for the families and communities affected, the loss is still raw and permanent. My thoughts remain with them. 

What has stayed with me, and continues to trouble me, is how little many people understand the danger of fire in the environments we have created. 

Seeing footage of teenagers standing close, filming, even dancing near the flames was a painful reminder of how unprepared and unaware we are.

Decades ago, people often had 15 to 17 minutes to escape a house fire. Now, that window can shrink to just 3 or 4 minutes.

One of the reasons lies in the materials around us.

Open cell polyurethane foam, sometimes referred to as "egg crate foam", and other synthetic petroleum-based materials, are commonly used in furniture, soundproofing, mattresses, interiors, and building materials. When they ignite, they melt, drip, and release extremely toxic smoke, accelerating fire spread and leaving little time to react.

Our homes, schools, and shared spaces are filled with similar synthetic materials. 

The most important message we can pass on is simple and lifesaving: if there is a fire, leave immediately. 

Do not film. Do not wait. Do not assume you have time.

We owe it to those we have lost to learn from this and to take material safety and fire education seriously.

The video linked in the comments by the Fire Safety Research Institute shows a side-by-side burn comparison of natural vs. synthetic furnished rooms. I'm not affiliated with them, just trying to raise awareness.
