🌍 I've never shared this story publicly before…

Why does South Africa mean so much to me?

Some of you might know this already but I thought it was time I shared it with the rest of my network.

I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. 

But my family's story started somewhere very different…

A small town outside of Cape Town, South Africa called Worcester 🇿🇦

My family emigrated to Canada in the 80s. Right befor the end of the Apartheid. 

We traded braais for barbecues, sunshine for snowstorms… and let’s just say adjusting to Canadian winters without rugby or cricket on TV was a shock 😅

But in our house?

We were always rooting for the Springboks
Eating Biltong
Barbecuing Boerewors

And South African roots ran deep.

Now here’s the crazy part…

I didn’t start Talently because of this connection.

The fact that we focus on hiring incredible South African talent was honestly a total coincidence.

But it’s become something much deeper, a mission I care about on a personal level.

🇿🇦 South Africa has some of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with but unfortunately, one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world.

So every job we bring back to South Africa helps change someone’s life.

Not just with a paycheck but with stability, dignity, and a shot at a brighter future.

That’s why I do this.

That’s why this work matters.

 Don’t just hit “Apply.” Stand out.
 → Connect on LinkedIn with a short, specific note
 → Engage with their posts (real comments, not “Great post!”)
 → Send a personalized message showing how you can help
You’re not asking for a job—you’re starting a conversation.

3️⃣ Differentiate
 This is where 99% of job seekers fall flat.
 → Create a 60-second video explaining why you’re interested
 → Build a one-pager showing how you’d add value in the role

3. The role keeps changing
 
If the job description shifts midway through the process or the responsibilities feel unclear, proceed with caution.
 
You don’t want to accept a role that turns into something completely different on day one.

4. No one can answer "what success looks like."
 
If you ask what a great first 90 days looks like and get vague answers, that's a problem.
 
It often means there’s no real plan and no clear support once you're hired.

5. The interview feels one-sided
 
You should have time to ask thoughtful questions and evaluate them just as much as they evaluate you.
 
If you’re treated like you’re lucky just to be there, that’s not a good sign.

A job interview goes both ways.
 
You’re not just trying to get hired, you’re trying to find the right fit.

Don’t ignore the red flags.

They usually get worse, not better.
