Federation of Master Builders

As Central Director, I lead strategic engagement initiatives for the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the UK’s largest trade association dedicated to supporting and representing small and medium-sized construction businesses (SMEs). My role focuses on ensuring SME builders have access to the resources, advocacy, and opportunities they need to grow and thrive.

Key aspects of my role include:

Building Strong Networks: Connecting members with industry stakeholders, policymakers, and business development opportunities.
Supporting Business Growth: Organising workshops, events, and initiatives that help SMEs develop skills, resilience, and best practices.
Amplifying Member Voices: Strengthening my board to ensure members provide a powerful, unified voice for SME members, driving meaningful representation and collaboration.
Advocating for SMEs: Representing member interests at regional and national levels to influence industry policy and practice.
Promoting Industry Excellence: Delivering public speaking engagements and championing initiatives that highlight quality and professionalism in construction.

Responsible for driving the sales performance of Business Insurance distributed through Lloyds TSB Commercial Bank and delivery of the in year sales plan for Essential Business Insurance (EBI)
Actively influenced Area Directors, management and their local teams to support the delivery of agreed EBI targets.
Identified and implemented initiatives to drive delivery of the EBI sales plan.
Devised management reports from central data-sets to reflect progress.

Key Account Support Manager

Complete managerial responsibility for the Admin Team of six people incorporating the recruitment, training and coaching of individuals together with personnel administration, appraisals and discipline.
Upon own initiative instigated a successful rejuvenation program for the administration department streamlining it to run efficiently.  This included the development of processes and procedures to support day to day operational activity.
Day to day responsibility for the smooth running of the operations department ensuring that Key Performance Indicators were achieved on a daily basis with management reports submitted to the board on a monthly basis in order to successfully manage the department and business as a whole.
In-house trainer for the company’s Goldmine Database including the management of all data input ensuring that accuracy and integrity are maintained.
First point of contact for the design and implementation of all contracts and reports creating a more professional image for the Company, specialising in the use of Crystal Reports Writer. 
Internal responsibility for all cash transactions accounting for approx. £25K per week together with cheque signatory authorisation.
Working closely with the Operations Director in managing ISO9002 for the whole of the company from drafting procedures and auditing through to presentation and implementation.

Hi, I’m Nicola, the Central Director at the Federation of Master Builders.

I’m here to champion SME construction firms across the East & West Midlands, East Anglia, and the Northern Home Counties. My goal is to build a strong sense of community among FMB members and connect them with the tools, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.

One of the things I care most about is helping homeowners and consumers feel confident that there are trustworthy builders out there—and I’ve got just the people to prove it! Our members meet rigorous standards, so whether it’s a big project or a small one, they’re in safe hands.

I’m also a big believer in collaboration and sharing ideas. I’m always on the lookout for events, partnerships, and practical ways to help our members grow their businesses.
