Most notably, I launched Socialry Marketing in January 2020, a social media marketing firm that helps businesses of all sizes tell their story, grow their brand, and actually enjoy the process. 

It was through running the agency and helping realtors, roofers, schools, non-profits, gyms, restaurants, builders, contractors, lawyers, and many other businesses that I saw an issue. It was difficult for me, a marketer, to be a subject matter expert in all of the industries that I serve. I want to be able to meet my client's needs, wants, and goals. Actually, I want to exceed them! That's when we built Phrayz, a content research tool that ingests / aggregates industry specific knowledge into one spot, and then organizes it for marketing material; blog outlines, infographic carousels, video scripts, and ads. 

When I’m not running a business, you’ll find me leading the Wilmington 1 Million Cups community, volunteering with Young Life, or doing CrossFit. As an Eagle Scout, I still try to live out what scouting as taught me through leadership, management, preparedness, and discipline. 

Still learning. Still building. Always dreaming big. And yes, doing it all with a smile.

🏡 House party at the Governor's Mansion. North Carolina Technology Association (NC TECH) held a Tech Leaders Reception there on Wednesday night. What an honor it is to be invited to this event, and be able to step inside this historical home. 

The night was filled with networking, and celebration as NC Tech just turned 33. Brooks Raiford addressed the crowd with industry data, notes from previous events, and stories with former Governors. One of those stories was with Governor Hunt. Also at the event, was former Governor Hunt's daughter, who is now Lt. Governor Rachel Hunt. She spoke to the crowd and really thanked the industry leaders in the room. 

I was happy to share the event with other YTPN Leadership Committee Members: John Bauman-Cleven, Briana Faulk, Reilley Keane, Sarah Maisto, Abby Peterson, Parker Roberson, Jordan Rogers, Ana Lucia Rodriguez, Ashley Smith, Ryan Springer, Tre Washington, MBA, CTS-D, PSP.

Jim Roberts was busy on Thursday putting on two different events that will have massive ripples (really tsunamis) across the state, country, and hopefully world. Tough Love happened in the morning to mid-afternoon, and then the VIP Dinner happened later that night. I'll create a separate post for the Tough Love event later. 

That night entrepreneurs and investors were able to enjoy dinner and drinks, and then hear MAJOR announcements drops. One being from Gary Bredow who gladly zoomed in. The other was from Thom, Scot, and Robbie about the NC Tweener Fund. 

This is MASSIVE news! Make sure to read the NC IDEA press release for more information. Founders building in North Carolina, this is just another reason why our state is so great. Entrepreneurs looking to move and build in NC (really specifically at the beach) this is just icing on the cake.

📒 The Annual Greater Wilmington Business Journal Book On Business Cover Reveal Night. Every year the GWBJ accepts nominations from artists with different pieces that may make it on the cover. This year it was a painting of Thalian Hall with some pups. 

It's always a good time when Craig Snow gets up on the mic to quiet the crowd. 

I got stuck in this one corner of the room for a while chit chatting. Other than that, most of the night was spent running around the room connecting the attendees together. I was able to introduce my clients to their ideal customers, newer business owners to local resources, and business pros to other events (mainly 1 Million Cups Wilmington).

🤪 I think you can guess which one of use wanted to do the crazy photo at a business event.... Here are some photos of the rest of my Thursday in Charlotte on February 12th.

Pt. 2 of my North Carolina Technology Association (NC TECH) Outlook on Tech 2026 notes. *refer to the vlog for earlier takeaways. 
Up next was the "Managing the Workforce in The Age of AI" panel with Juan Garzón, Dr. Charlitta Hatch, Heidi Smith, and Martin Strasburger. Lots of their conversations revolved around educating, hiring, upskilling. Charlitta had mentioned that the education system cannot be a late adopter to the age of AI. Going off of that, new jobs will arise from AI, and we cannot use old ways. No longer are the days of "teaching to the test." When hiring candidates Charlitta looks for curiosity. Heidi had mentioned hiring vs upskilling really depends on responsibility, job function, and speed. At work, she said that they have AI prompting parties. Also, when referring to upskilling, Martin had interjected that we should "worry about the skilled user in AI that can be more productive than you." 

To close out the NC Tech Outlook on Tech 2026, Darwin Herdman the CISO of Silver Tree Consulting & Services talked about cyber threats. We should all be aware by now that threat actors are leveraging AI too. For them it helps with persuasion, and throughput efforts. There is also still a massive skills gap in the average consumer, so we're vulnerable. To put it into a few words, there will be more convincing attempts to hack into your systems in the future. That's scary! 

After the Outlook on Tech 2026, a few of us headed over to the Seed The South Capital Summit Premiere event in South End. Lots of the founders in room at NC Tech didnt even know about the Seed The South event too! That was hosted in a very nice Northeastern University hub space. While there Juan filled us in on some fascinating details. Then Ashley Gautreaux, and Mark McDowell shared about their funds and the conference from an Investor's eyes. Finally, Andrew Ashur, and Ashlyn Greer shared about their experience at the conference from a Founder's eyes.  

*If you look really close, you can see me standing at the back of the room getting content. 

I'm still following up and booking meetings with people I've met from the NC Tech event. 

The excitement about Seed The South has been built. Who will be there this year? Probably one person (really there will be more) who can make a bold impact on your startup in a good way. You really never know how far one connection can take you. And, there definitely will be investors in the room / on the field.

🍼 We're still in the toddler stage of AI. "Lots of AI has been built for internal use, but not a lot of external customer value" said Sharyn Leaver at the North Carolina Technology Association (NC TECH) Outlook on Tech 2026 in Charlotte, NC. 

From the keynotes, to panels, and connections that were made in between, the event was insightful. Thanks to the whole NC Tech team - Brooks Raiford, Alex Taylor, Benjamin Tramontana, Aaron Fuller, Michelle Calton, Rachel M., and many others. 

The opening keynote was Sharyn Leaver - Chief Research Officer at Forrester. I love how most of her talk was just about predictions (not a ton of executives mention predictions or hopes these days). I mentioned a few in the video, but a few others that I loved were:
- Human expertise will rival genAI & appeal to buyers who seek deeper validation
- deepfake detection spending will grow
- vendor fragmentation will force enterprises to compose "agent lakes."
- A great AI use case if Bank of America's Erica. 

Next up was Ted Abernathy. I could not keep up with taking pictures, and jotting down notes. He was flying through the deck, but still did it with humor. I'll list a few of the facts:
- NC is 9th in Pop. growth for the working force , ages 25-24. 
- Establishments have larger growth than employment
- NC is 7th in Tech Industry Job Growth
- NC is 1st for Women in Tech
- NC is 13th in tech R&D (26th in 2012)
- NC is the middle third of states who are exposed to AI

The first panel was the "ROI of AI" with Sargeetha Menon, David C. Reynolds, and Parisia Clyburn-Patton of Truist. As a ank they did talk A LOT about mitigation of risk, but a few other great points were thrown in there too. Sargeetha mentioned consumers ability to switch quoting, "one Jake from State Farm away." She also noted tech architectural reviews, and the difference between Soft ROI and Hard ROI. David mentioned points about AI getting out of the pilot purgatory stage, and how customers are getting lots of info, with that how to businesses showcase trust. Parisia lead the group and mentioned that "not all AI use cases deserve to exist." Basically how we cannot have shiny object syndrome.

Steve Smith was up next. His deck comprised of comparisons between the past, and now, one example being mass production to mass personalization. In AI development, as executives, sand businesses we need to still to have optimism even after AI use cases fail. He said that "AI will accelerate how you modernize, but it won't do it for you." Finally he addresses many great points around consumer experiences. 

The next panel was Dr. Charlitta Hatch, Heidi Smith, Martin Strasburger, and Juan Garzón. The last speaker of the day was Darwin Herdman with Silver Tree. I ran out of characters for this post. Stay tuned. I'll be listing more info later.

🌮 We got photobombed by a taco! 🏀
After a stressful day pitching at the Jim Roberts Tough Love Event, and attending the VIP Dinner, I somehow finished the night in Trask Coliseum. 
While there, I found another founder, and an office neighbor Cameron Crawford Calhoun.

Thanks to Morgan Moskal for the tickets. The stars aligned in our schedules where we both couldn't make the game until about 7:30 (it was a 7:00PM start). It really worked out because we were down, and started to come back and pull ahead towards the end of the game. 

The Seahawks have been fun to watch all season. I still remember my time as a Sophomore at UNCW in 2016 missing a stats quiz to watch the team play in the first round of the tournament.

✴️ Hearing that some people still don't understand the problem we solve hurts to hear. But hey, I just need more data points from our users, and I need to pitch more. It's clear. 

On Thursday I pitched about Phrayz in the Tough Love event put on by Jim Roberts of the Network for Entrepreneurs Wilmington. Thank you to Lee White, C. D. "Hoop" Morgan, III, Matt Williamson, Christian Pardue, RN, Paul Salisbury, Tom Fisher ☁️, Keith Markfield, Jordan Finger, Scott Davis for your feedback. I need to send my recording to Craig Stone so he can give me some tips over email. 

For a pre-revenue marketing software, I thought my pitch was informative and engaging. My deck was a mixed bag, consisting of slides I love and am confident talking about, and some slides that were weaker. But as it's my second time officially pitching, and this was a private event, we can really only go up from here. 

Some specific advice from the review committee I received:
- more before and after cases from users and what they produce
- a Day In The Life of a user
- better product images
- flow graphs
- financial viability 
- competitive moat vs competition
- my SOM was too narrow
- I have skin in the game

I am incredibly happy and proud of my performance. This is something that just takes time to master. Heck, I think I changed the hook I was going to use to start the pitch maybe 80 different times. 

I will still be applying to pitch at conferences across the region, even while we are still bringing on initial paying customers. Even if I'm not pitching in-person, I still will be pitching Phrayz on here.
