As part of a dedicated team of volunteer photographers, I had the honor of creating cherished family portraits for Army service members and their families during the holiday seasons of 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. Our mission was to capture the joy and togetherness of these moments, providing families with lasting memories despite the challenges of military life.

The USO, since its inception in 1941, has stood as the nation’s leading organization supporting U.S. military members and their families. 

From the moment they join, through every assignment and deployment, and as they transition back to civilian life, the USO is steadfastly by their side. Being part of this tradition of service and support has been incredibly rewarding.

Our holiday portrait sessions at Ft. Hood were more than just photography gigs; they were opportunities to give back to those who sacrifice so much for our country. You can hire the best photographer in town and throw money at the shoot.

It won't matter.

So even great photography falls flat.

That's why I start every project the same way. 

Long before anyone steps in front of a camera.

I get crystal clear on three things:
- What story are we telling?
- Who needs to see it?
- Where are these images going to live?

It's not about adding red tape.
It's about eliminating surprises.

Because when everyone's on the same page early, creative work gets easier. And every shot feels intentional and on brand.

Everything else is just guesswork.

What people don’t see in production work

Most people only see the finished clip.

They do not see the call time.

They do not see the drive.

They do not see the setup in the dark.

Last week I was on assignment for Fox Weather, shooting video coverage ahead of a winter system outside of Dallas. 

The behind-the-scenes moments happened well before anything dramatic showed up on radar.

Pre-dawn light. 

Cold air. 

Crew moving quietly. 

Cameras coming online while most people were still asleep.

That is what professional production actually looks like.

Good video is rarely about reacting in the moment. 

It is about being ready before the moment arrives. 

Gear checked. 

Shots planned. 

Team synced. 

Contingencies already thought through.

When the story breaks, the work has already started.

If it feels calm on screen, it is usually because the chaos was handled hours earlier.

This same discipline is what corporate teams rely on when timing matters, leadership is involved, or there is no room for do-overs.

The environment changes. The standard does not.

The kind of visual work that actually lasts

The most valuable visual work is rarely the loudest.

It comes from teams that think ahead, respect process, and understand that images are not decoration. They are tools.

When photography is planned properly, it stops being a scramble and starts doing real work for the business:
Supporting sales conversations
Reinforcing credibility
Creating consistency across teams and platforms

That does not happen by accident.

It happens when someone is accountable for the outcome, not just the output. When the focus is on what the company needs, how the images will be used, and what standards the brand has to maintain.

Good visuals reduce friction.

They save time.

They prevent rework.

That is why the best projects feel calm, organized, and repeatable.

Not flashy. Just effective.

Getting featured by Professional Photographers of America isn't about attention.

It's about what it says.

Anyone can chase trends. 

Most careers fade after the first rush.

Staying power? That's rare. 

It takes discipline. Obsession with the basics. 
Showing up, year after year, when nobody is watching.

All the noise, the hype, the "look at me" moments, none of it means much.

What counts is trust. Doing the work well, every single time. 
Building something that lasts.

That's the only spotlight that matters.

Some of the most rewarding work I do doesn’t happen in studios.

It happens on concrete floors.
Under fluorescent lights.
Surrounded by steel, noise, and heat.

With the people who make industry move.

The welders.
The operators.
The technicians.
The crews in the field.

The ones who sweat for a living.

At first glance, it’s gray. Metallic. Industrial.

But that’s where the craft begins.

Because shaping light in that environment matters.
Framing matters.
Respect matters.

When you get it right, something shifts.

The operator looks iconic.
The technician looks powerful.
The environment feels intentional instead of ordinary.

And here’s the truth:

It’s more rewarding than photographing celebrities.

Celebrities already come with a spotlight.

The people on the floor earn it.

For marketing leaders, this matters more than you think.

Authentic industrial imagery builds credibility.
It separates you from stock photography.
It shows prospects who you really are, not who you pretend to be.

If your brand depends on trust, capability, and real-world performance, your visuals should reflect that.

The people doing the work are your strongest brand asset.

They deserve to look like it.

That’s why alignment before a shoot matters so much.
Not to slow things down, but to make sure the work stays on brand and on purpose.

When photography is handled this way, it stops being a series of disconnected projects and starts reinforcing the brand over time.

Why professional photography is a business decision, not a creative one

Phones are incredible tools.

If something needs to be documented in the moment and a phone is what you have, use it. Having a record is better than having nothing.

But that is not why companies hire professional photographers.

A professional is brought in when the business needs to be intentional.

Intentional about how the company is represented.

Intentional about how people, products, and services are seen.

Intentional about creating images that will live beyond a single moment.

Professional photography is not about pressing a shutter. 

It is about understanding the business first.

What will these images be used for?

Who is the audience?

How long will they live?

What standards does the brand need to uphold?

A professional shows up already thinking about those questions, because that is the job.

Lighting, consistency, framing, and visual tone are not creative preferences. They are signals. 

They quietly communicate competence, scale, and trust before a word is read or a pitch is heard.

Phones are there when a professional is not available.

Professionals are hired when the outcome matters.

Both have their place. 

They are not interchangeable.

Everyone wants to talk deliverables.

How many photos do we get?
What file types?
Where do they go?

Wrong starting point.

First question should be: what problem are we trying to solve with these images?

Skip that, and your photos float.
They fill up hard drives. They collect dust.
No consistency. No clear brand statement. No impact.

The strongest photography isn't made for a checklist.
It's built on intent.

A standard you actually reinforce.
A message that repeats and sticks.
A team that looks unified, always.

Photography is a choice, not an output.
It's not content. It's how you build what your brand stands on.

Decide that up front, and the images finally matter.

Every image your company puts out is an audition.

It either builds your credibility, or chips away at it.

There's no middle ground.

Top hires notice.
Investors notice.
Partners notice.
Clients definitely notice.

Most won't say it. Most won't even realize it. But the impression sticks.

Old headshots.
Random event shots.
Stock photos everywhere.
Lighting that shifts from page to page.

No one thing is a dealbreaker. 

But together, they paint a picture: out of sync, out of control.

Strong organizations play a different game.

They stay visually consistent, everywhere. 

Headshots match. 
Lighting lines up. 
Event photos tell one story.

That's not ego. 
That's operational discipline in action.

Because when your visuals align, people read something deeper, stability, intention, confidence.

Photography isn't decoration. It's brand infrastructure.

And if you're not controlling the perception, something else is.

One thing I’ve learned working with internal marketing and communications teams:

Photography rarely fails because of execution.
It fails because expectations were never aligned.

Different stakeholders want different things.
Timelines get compressed.
Usage evolves after the shoot is over.

That’s normal.

The projects that go smoothly are the ones where there’s early clarity around:
• who the images are for
• how they’ll be used
• what “on brand” actually means

That upfront alignment saves far more time than it costs.

It reduces revisions.
It reduces friction.
And it gives teams images they can confidently use without second-guessing.

Some of the most meaningful photographs I’ve made are the quiet ones.

Not the action.
Not the spectacle.
The moments that sit just before something happens.

Projects like 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙌𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩 reinforced that for me.

Photography isn’t only about what’s visible.
It’s about intention, context, and knowing when to let the image speak without explanation.

That mindset carries into all of my work.
Whether it’s documentary or commercial, the goal is the same:
create images that respect the subject and hold up over time.

Restraint is often what gives an image its strength.

Getting featured in Production Paradise's Showcase Magazine this month forced me to look at my work differently.

Local praise can make you complacent. 

It's easy to feel like you're ahead when you're the big fish in a small pond.

But global attention is unforgiving. 

Suddenly, your photos are lined up next to campaigns from all over. 

No one cares if your work is good for Houston. 

It's either world-class or invisible.

That's the gut check I crave.

Commercial photography isn't about artistic flair. 
It's about control, plain and simple.

Control of perception.
Control of narrative.
Control of credibility.

When brands invest in visuals, they're not buying pretty pictures. 

They're making a statement about who they are, and who they're competing with.

Recognition is nice, but the real prize is this: constant pressure to level up.

That's what keeps the work honest.

Most people only learn this lesson once it's too late:

Cutting corners on your photography budget will cost you more. Every single time.

Sure, you save a few bucks up front. But here's what really happens:

You get delayed headshots that miss deadlines. 

You get team photos that no one wants to use on LinkedIn or your website. 

You get images that don't fit your brand,or worse, actively work against it.

You're not saving money. 

You're just paying for mistakes with your time, your reputation, and eventually, your wallet.

I've seen it happen over and over:

Companies hire a "friend with a camera." Or they grab the cheapest quote out there.

Then they realize the results are unusable, so they scramble. 

Re-shoots. Emergency edits. PR damage control when the CEO's image looks unprofessional in a big feature.

And those "extra" costs? 

Nobody budgets for them. But you pay anyway.

Great images don't just happen.

It takes experience knowing how to work with real people, on tight timelines, in random settings.

Doing it for a living is even tougher.

Talent isn't enough. 

Obsession isn't just helpful, it's required. 
Identity level. 
It's how you see the world. 
Everything else fades.
