I’m Danny Langloss, and like you, I’ve spent the past 20 years on the front lines leading in the trenches. Throughout this time, I’ve learned that leadership is not for the faint of heart. It’s complex and challenging.

As a detective sergeant, I had to keep my team motivated and empowered despite the burnout caused by long hours and traumatic incidents. We created a resilient team that consistently outperformed their peers and were energized to serve victims and their families.

When I was promoted to police chief, I inherited a toxic and divided culture. Through vision, listening, clear expectations, and strong leadership, we created an inclusive culture and became one of the most desired places to work in the region.

Later, as the City Manager, I joined a fractured and siloed team that lacked purpose, connection, and direction. Within months, we created a team united through purpose, fully committed to delivering their best for our community. Today, this team is guided by the values of “Commitment to Excellence” and “Here to Serve.”

This past Friday I had the honor of presenting the closing keynote for the Student Empowerment Conference hosted by our Regional Office of Education. The day was all about giving students a voice. 

125 high school freshman to seniors came together from schools across 3 counties. After our opening activity, you could have heard a pin drop in the auditorium. They were completely dialed in. 

The core single takeaway: Leadership is how we make people feel. 

Every interaction, we are driving an emotion, leaving a stamp on our team members. 

These stamps will create trust, confidence, empowerment, ….

Or they will create the opposite emotions. 

The key is being intentional about what kind of emotions we want to create in our people. 

I call this the Emotional Stamp.

At the tender age of 8 I launched my first venture and quickly learned that influencing customer behavior had little to do with logic. This discovery began with a small metal loom and bags of colored rag loops. When my parents were away, I confiscated my mother’s address book and started calling her friends.

My first call was to Mrs. P. I explained I was making custom-colored pot holders for 50¢ and asked if she’d like any. She agreed to buy two.

Then it was on to Mrs. T. When she also agreed to buy two, I countered with ... “Only two Mrs. T? Mrs. P agreed to buy four”.

She quickly increased her order.

Even then I understood Mrs. T’s emotional need not to be outdone or appear cheap.

My manufacturing empire grossed $19 before my mortified mother discovered what I’d been up to and hid her address book. 

But I never forgot the importance of focusing on what really motivates customers.

In fact, numerous research studies including two conducted by Gallup have shown that over 70% of all B2B and B2C customer decisions are driven by emotion.
