Type. Delete. Type. Delete.

If I’d been writing on paper, there’d have been a small mountain of wadded-up pages next to the trashcan.

When I first started writing on LinkedIn, even telling a simple story felt impossible.

I tried every formula. Studied every “perfect” storytelling post.

No matter what I did, it all felt forced (and sounded like crap).

I stopped trying to make stories sound clever and started noticing what made them connect. That’s when things shifted.

I would’ve given anything to skip those hours of frustration.

That’s one of the things I really appreciate about my friend Renee Lynn Frojo ✨. She doesn’t just tell you to tell stories. She teaches you how to find the ones that make people care and remember.

(If only I’d had her around a couple of years ago.)

So when WENDY SHORE  and I started brainstorming guest experts for our monthly Content Circle workshops, she was at the top of the list.

Even though I’m way more confident in my storytelling now, I already know I’ll pick up a trick or two from her.

Stop hiding behind fancy words. Just say what the f* you actually do.

If your title sounds like AI wrote it, we need to talk.

❌ You’re not a “brand visibility amplification specialist.”
✅ You’re a marketing consultant.

❌ You’re not a “human capital acquisition partner.”
✅ You’re a recruiter.

❌ You’re not a “transformational momentum alignment strategist.”
✅ You’re a business coach. Own it.

Would you order a “globally inspired handheld flavor module”… when you just want a taco?

(Didn’t think so. You’re not ordering a mystery meal.)

Make it simple. Make it obvious.

If people have to guess what you do, they’ll move on.

It’s not clear or clever. It’s confusing.

You may as well send them straight to your competitor’s website. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway, rant over. (For now.)

Here’s why this gets me fired up:

I see talented business owners with real results and strong offers get ignored.

Not because they aren’t good at what they do. But because their title sounds like it was written by an intern who just discovered a thesaurus.

Overcomplicating your message doesn’t make you sound smarter. It just makes you forgettable. 

You’ve worked too hard for that.

Shocker: nobody’s searching for jargon. They’re searching for people who can solve their problems—clearly.

Clarity sells. Make it obvious how you help because that’s what gets you hired.

Will you be there?

There’s one thing I still haven’t figured out in my business. Not once in 73 tries.

I ship out a newsletter, thinking, man I crushed it.

And what happens? 0 replies. Absolute radio silence.

I check to see if I scheduled it for the right time. Yep.

Maybe the subject line sucked? Have people even opened it yet? Yep, over 50% of them every week. 🤔

Then, some weeks, I hit send thinking: Well at least I got it out on time.

And then the replies roll in, and maybe even a lead.

(If only I had a magic eight ball…)

Here’s what I have learned: 

Just because no one replies doesn’t mean it didn’t resonate.

Even the quiet ones get people thinking. You just don’t see it until someone finally hits reply. (But not gonna lie, those replies do feel good.)

This week’s issue? It hit.

Freedom doesn’t mean sh*t if you’re still asking for permission.

Smart people gave me smart advice.

- “Wait until you’re ready.”
- “Focus on other things first.”
- “That part can come later.”

And because they’re people I respect, I listened.

Then this summer, I sat down for my Q3 planning session. The metrics looked good  and everything was moving forward exactly as planned.

While I celebrated that progress, there was still a bit of discontent, of feeling boxed in.

Speaking kept calling my name, and ignoring it started to feel less like strategy and more like self-betrayal.

So there I was, staring at my carefully thought-out plan, asking myself:

Do I follow the sound advice that would probably work for most business owners? Or do I trust the pull toward something I love to do and know I’m damn good at, and figure it out as I go?

At the end of the day, I realized I’d regret not doing it way more than doing it and screwing it up. So I stopped waiting and started to invest my time and energy into speaking.

Here’s why: I love it.

It’s impact, it’s connection, and let’s be honest… it pays well.

In September, I gave a keynote.

That single talk turned into a new client, two proposals in the pipeline, and a discovery call booked.

And while I’m not complaining about those leads, the best part was what came after. The messages about aha moments, clarity, and the ideas they couldn’t wait to put into action.

That was the confirmation: this is exactly what I’m meant to be doing. I work with impact-driven brands for a reason—to help them amplify what they’re already doing.

Speaking lets me do that on a bigger scale.

It’s too soon to know if I should’ve listened and waited, but…

if freedom is the goal, it has to include the freedom to f*ck up.

If it doesn’t work out, I’ll pivot. But I’d rather take the risk and find out—because what if it does?

Even the smartest people with the best intentions can’t always know what’s right for you.

Playing it safe doesn’t build freedom. Betting on yourself and owning your choices does.

Apparently, I need a better story…

That’s what a few people told me after I managed to give myself a concussion two and a half weeks ago.

It wasn’t a dramatic fall or heroic accident.

Nope, I stood up after picking something off the floor and rammed my head right into the corner of the fireplace mantle. 🤦🏻‍♀️

(I even dented the mantle. One of my oldest friends said she’s just glad there’s finally proof of how hard-headed I am. Fair.)

The past couple of weeks have been a humbling reminder of how lucky I am: friends, peers, and clients who genuinely care.

They didn’t just tell me to put my health first; they meant it. (And not in that “sure, take time off but still hit the deadline” kind of way.)

That kind of trust and empathy means a lot.

So naturally, it only feels right to shine a little light on one of them today.

Each week, I highlight someone in my network who makes it a better place just by being part of it.

This week’s #SpotlightSeries post goes to Josh Perry. 

He saw a quick comment I left about having a concussion and immediately texted to check in, and then kept checking in.

(I’m not great at sitting still, so I probably needed the reminders.)

If anyone understands what I’m going through, it’s him. 

Josh went from being a pro BMX athlete who competed in the X-Games to surviving multiple brain tumors, and now he coaches high-performing leaders and athletes to achieve more by doing less without sacrificing their health or relationships.

We first met for coffee here in Raleigh, and later I met his amazing wife. She even reached out with some concussion recovery tips of her own (because she’s been there too).

So today’s #SpotlightSeries goes to Josh, for being the kind of person who doesn’t just talk about alignment and wellbeing…he lives it.

Referrals are borrowed trust.
Messaging is how you earn it yourself.

Referrals feel like proof you’ve made it.

Someone trusted you enough to put their name on the line because they’ve seen the results, felt the impact, and believed in your work enough to tell someone else about it.

That’s not luck. That’s earned.

And if we're being honest, it feels really good to build your business on reputation. It means you’ve done great work and people noticed.

👉🏻 But at some point, reputation alone becomes the reason you plateau instead of grow.

Because every referral still depends on someone else explaining what you do, why it matters, and why you’re the one they should trust.

And when you start reaching beyond your network, those jobs become yours.

- Your positioning has to reduce risk (by replacing questions with confidence).
- Your messaging has to frame the problem in language that makes the right people feel seen.
- Your copy has to make the next step feel obvious.

That’s how you build the same kind of trust your reputation once carried on its own.

Maybe you’ve thought: “We don’t need marketing, we get referrals,” but you also already know how fragile that safety net can be.

So maybe you run ads, post more, send a slew of cold pitches…

Over time, you realize businesses that grow beyond referrals don’t get louder. They have to get clearer and more resonant.

Their message has to create the confidence their reputation used to.

That’s the shift—from being trusted because people know you, to being trusted because your message shows them why they should.

🤔 I was going to call this Deep Thoughts, but I don’t want to get sued by SNL. So… I’m accepting pitches.

What would you name the Netflix adaptation? (Bonus points if it looks good on merch)

When people hear “I use AI,” they automatically translate it to “I don’t write my own content.”

I get it. They’ve seen too many robot-generated posts that sound like oatmeal.

But assuming everyone uses it that way is short-sighted.

Saying you “use AI” and assuming it means you don’t think for yourself? That’s like saying you “play football” because you tossed a ball around once in the backyard.

So when a prospective client asks about my process, I dig deeper.

If they’re worried I’ll churn out bland, generic content, I can show them how strategy and creativity still drive every word.

But if they don’t want me to use it at all? That’s a hard no. 👎🏻

Because the strategists and copywriters who get left behind won’t be the ones adopting new tools…

they’ll be the ones refusing to learn how to use them well.

And for the record, AI goes well beyond ChatGPT. It’s one tool among thousands, and technically not even true artificial intelligence, but that’s a debate for another day.

I’m no expert, and I’ve barely scratched the surface, but using these tools has been a (sorry, I have to say it 🤷🏻‍♀️) game changer.

It saves me hours on the stuff that doesn’t need my creative or strategic brain—

which means faster results for clients and more time spent on what actually makes sh*t happen.

Here are just a few ways I’ve used AI recently:

✔️ creating a GPT to pull Voice-of-Customer insights from call transcripts

✔️ compiling and organizing competitor data

✔️ drafting proposals that are strategic and tailored

✔️ analyzing my newsletter for flow and tone

✔️ crafting a reply when a client asked for something beyond the scope of work (sure, sounds basic, but it saved me an hour of wordsmithing)

✔️ creating a SOP for my VA

✔️ brainstorming subject lines (they all sucked, but one sparked the idea I used)

✔️ researching a Murphy bed for my office (after three years, it’s time to move out of the corner and claim my space)

Tech doesn’t replace creativity. It replaces busywork. 

So I can spend more time thinking deeply, writing strategically, and helping clients stand out in a sea of sameness.
