100-year-old productivity hack. Still works. Still simple.

1918. Charles Schwab runs Bethlehem Steel. Hires productivity consultant Ivy Lee. Lee's offer: give me 15 minutes with each executive, pay me what it's worth in 3 months. 3 months later, Schwab writes a cheque for $25,000, equivalent to $400,000 today. The method was that effective.

The Ivy Lee Method. Five steps. At the end of each workday, write down the 6 most important tasks for tomorrow. Not 7, not 10, six. Rank them in order of true importance. Tomorrow morning, start with task 1, work until complete. Move to task 2, then 3, one at a time in order. Unfinished tasks move to tomorrow's list. Repeat daily.

Why 6 tasks? Forces prioritisation. With unlimited tasks, everything feels important, nothing gets done. Six is manageable, ambitious but achievable.

Why rank them? Most people work on whatever feels urgent or easy. Ranking forces you to confront true importance. Task 1 should be the thing that, if completed alone, makes tomorrow successful.

Why one task at a time? Multitasking is a myth. Task switching reduces productivity by 40%. Takes 23 minutes to regain focus after interruption. Doing one thing until complete equals deep work.

Why plan the night before? Decision fatigue compounds throughout the day. By 4pm, decision-making quality is 40% worse than 9am. Planning tonight means decisions made when not depleted. Wake up, no decision required, just execute task 1.

Six tasks, ranked, one at a time. Decide tonight, execute tomorrow.

The Ivy Lee Method 100-Year-Old Productivity Hack 

One thing I’ve learned after building multiple teams: the most valuable people are rarely the loudest.

They’re the ones who quietly upskill when no one’s watching.

You can’t teach that level of internal drive.
You can’t force someone to care about their growth more than the company requires.

That has to come from within.

And from a neuroscience perspective, people who self-educate build something incredibly powerful:
a plastic brain.

Every new skill, every book, every online course, it all strengthens their neural pathways for adaptability, problem - solving, and creative thinking.

Those traits compound.

They become faster learners.
Better decision-makers.
More resourceful under pressure.
And over time, they outgrow people who rely only on formal training.

When I hire, I look for curiosity.
Not credentials.
Not polished answers.
Curiosity.

Because someone who reads, experiments, builds, tinkers, or studies on their own time will eventually outpace almost everyone else.
They don’t wait to be told what to learn.
They choose it.

And that choice is what makes them dangerous, in the best way possible.

If you’re that person, keep going.
Even if no one notices right now.
Your effort is compounding quietly.
You’ll feel the gap before anyone else sees it.

Gut health is everywhere right now.

Every influencer has a gut protocol. Every brand has a gut product. Everyone's talking about the microbiome like they have a PhD in it.

Some of it is real. Some of it is astrology in a lab coat.

Here's what actually holds up.

The gut-brain axis is real. Your gut produces 90% of your serotonin. The vagus nerve connects your gut to your brain. When your gut struggles, your mood often follows. This research goes back 30 years.

Probiotics for specific conditions are real. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG helps with digestive issues. Bifidobacterium longum helps with anxiety symptoms. But it's strain-specific. Random probiotics don't work the same way.

Fibre matters. Your gut bacteria feed on it. Most people need 25-30g per day. Most get around 15g. The research on this is overwhelming.

Here's what doesn't hold up.

Gut detoxes aren't real. Your liver and kidneys already do that. "Detox teas" are marketing, not medicine.

Fermented foods are healthy. But they're not the same as probiotics. The strains are different. The amounts are inconsistent. Most don't survive your stomach acid.

Leaky gut syndrome isn't a recognised diagnosis. Increased intestinal permeability is real and being studied. But selling you a cure for "leaky gut" is premature.

The pattern is simple. Real gut health science is specific. It names strains, cites studies, explains mechanisms.

Fake gut health science is vague. Buzzwords, big promises, no details.

Certainty sells. Accuracy wins long term.

Gut health audit

Your gut health isn't just about digestion.

It's the reason you wake up tired. Or struggle to focus by 3pm. Or feel anxious for no clear reason.

Your gut affects how your brain works every single day.

Five stages control this. When they're working, you perform better. When even one is broken, everything gets harder.

Stage 1: Microbiome diversity. You need 1,000+ bacterial species. Low diversity means more inflammation and unstable energy. Eat 30+ different plants per week.

Stage 2: Gut barrier integrity. When it's damaged, toxins leak into your bloodstream. That's brain fog and chronic fatigue. Reduce processed foods and manage stress.

Stage 3: Serotonin production. 90% of it is made in your gut. Low serotonin means poor sleep and mood swings. Take probiotics with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains.

Stage 4: SCFA production. Your gut bacteria digest fibre and produce SCFAs. They fuel your gut lining and reduce inflammation. Hit 25-30g of fibre daily.

Stage 5: Vagus nerve function. It connects your gut to your brain. Poor tone means constant stress signals. Improve it with deep breathing and cold exposure.

When all five work together, you wake up with energy, focus holds, mood stays stable, and you sleep deeply.

When even one is broken, you hit the 3pm crash, brain fog makes decisions harder, and small stress feels overwhelming.

Your gut is the foundation for how your brain functions.

Fix your gut. Perform better.

Five gut health markers that predict burnout.

These aren't just digestive issues. They're warning signs your body is breaking down.

Marker 1: Chronic bloating. Poor nutrient absorption. Even if you're eating well, nutrients aren't getting into your system. Poor absorption leads to deficiency, chronic fatigue, inability to recover from stress, and burnout.

Marker 2: Irregular bowel movements. Going 3+ days without or 4+ times per day means toxin buildup. Toxins recirculate instead of leaving. This causes brain fog, poor decision-making, more stress, and burnout. Normal is 1-2 times daily.

Marker 3: Food sensitivities that appeared recently. Gut inflammation and leaky gut. Undigested food leaks into your bloodstream. Your immune system attacks it. This creates inflammation, dysregulated stress response, inability to handle normal stressors, and burnout.

Marker 4: Sugar cravings, especially mid-afternoon. Blood sugar instability from poor gut bacteria. Unhealthy bacteria drive sugar cravings and prevent stable glucose regulation. Every crash depletes stress resilience. Blood sugar crashes lead to energy crashes, inability to sustain focus, falling behind, and burnout.

Marker 5: Poor sleep even when exhausted. Gut barrier damage and inflammation. Your gut produces melatonin and regulates circadian rhythm. Poor sleep damages gut lining. Damaged gut worsens sleep. This creates chronic inflammation, inability to recover, and burnout.

When all 5 are present, you wake up exhausted, brain fog makes decisions harder, small stressors feel overwhelming, you need caffeine and sugar to function, and recovery takes longer.

This isn't laziness. This is your body telling you the foundation is broken.

Fix your gut before you burn out. Not after.

If you’re running a business and raising a kid, you’re building two start-ups at once.

Give yourself credit for that.

Here's the hard truth...

No free country has been able to stop Netflix from putting video rental stores out of business. 

No one has escaped smartphones sucking in people's attention. 

No country isn't using email. 

Technology rolls forward whether you like it or not. 

And the countries that own the technology businesses dominate those that don't.

Now more than ever, we need to build entrepreneur ecosystems to discover the business models of the future. 

We need to create companies that surf the waves of disruption, not just get dumped by them. 

We need to cheer on the entrepreneur who will build the economy of the future, rather than trying to drown them as they are getting off the ground.

Let's talk about BrewDog.

480 jobs gone. Costs have risen sharply in an industry that’s not growing. 

BrewDog has just been acquired in a distress deal for £33 million, and the new owners are shutting around 30 sites, with 480 workers losing their jobs overnight. 

The locations were analysed independently and the conclusion was that they simply can’t make money. 

Why?

Start with wages. A few years ago, hiring a 21-year-old in hospitality at minimum wage cost a business roughly £17–18k all-in. Today it's closer to £29k once wage increases, national insurance and regulation are included. 

You can say £17k isn’t enough to live on, and maybe that’s true. But if a business can’t make money, that number shrinks to £0. 

When an employee costs £17–18k, a venue might need roughly £60k of revenue to justify that role. At £29k, that requirement is closer to £90k. 

Hospitality businesses can’t always pass that on to customers. Raise prices too far and people stay home; they watch Netflix, buy a ready meal, and skip the pub.

One thing people are missing is that these businesses historically gave people their first rung on the ladder. They may not provide the highest paying jobs but they do provide many people with a place to start (myself included - I was once a waiter, a barman, delivery driver and a cook on minimum wage). 

When taxes and employment costs keep rising, those rungs start disappearing. 

Add to this the inflated council taxes and energy costs and it’s a wonder how any locations will survive longer term.

Government told kids that they should go to uni and they'd get a good job. They offered up huge loans to make it happen. Now we have millions of people who can't get decent take-home pay and are trapped under a mountain of compounding debt. 

This isn't a failure of capitalism, it's a perfect example of how government spending creates market distortions, debt bubbles and unintended consequences. The answer is smaller government, less intervention and more room for capitalism to work.

What if AI’s ability to code creates a global SHORTAGE of software developers.

The economy is full of unintended consequences and paradoxes. One example is the Jevons Paradox - when something becomes hyper efficient, the consumption rises unexpectedly. 

Imagine this, AI sudddenly makes it cheaper and easier than ever for millions of people to create a software startup. What used to cost $500K and 6months, now costs $2000 and 2 weeks.

Suddenly everyone has a software idea that only requires 1000 users to be profitable. Millions of small software startups launch and each of them wants at least one real human software developer on their team. The automation of coding creates a massive demand for coders!! 

This isnt a new phenomenon. When smartphones put a production quality camera and editing studio into everyone’s pocket, the global demand for camera operators and editors skyrocketed. When Excel spreadsheets automated accounting an analysis functions the global demand for accountants and analysts grew. 

YouTube massively lowered the bar for what could be a viable TV show. In the 90s a TV show needed to make $5M per episode to get a green light. Now you can have a guy cleaning rusty tools in his shed with 200K subscribers making $5K a month profit. 

When chefs give away their recipes demand for their food goes up despite people having the option to make it cheaply themselves. Consultants who publish their best ideas in books find themselves booked out at higher and higher rates. Giving something away very cheaply can lead to a new influx of money. 

It’s entirely possible that AI makes it so efficient to start a business that within a few years, there is a massive shortage of lawyers, accountants, developers, marketing and sales people. 

It wouldnt be the first time the economy surprised us in a counter-intuitive way.

Try this...

Run down the list of jobs that are out there. 

Almost all of them will be largely redundant in a few years thanks to AI and robotics.

Coding software - AI.
Accounting - AI.
Law - AI.
Video editing - AI.
Engineering - AI.
IT support - AI.
Customer service - AI.

Will there be humans in the loop? Absolutely. But we are heading into a world where a few humans supervising AI agents will be doing the workload of what 100 people do today.

So, what will everyone do?

I imagine a time in medieval England when the crops were growing, the animals were fed, and the harvest had been done. Day to day life revolved around family, community, faith, festivals, and simple pleasures.

Maybe we are so out of touch with this simple way of life that it seem alien to us. Before industrialisation, people worked but work wasn't the centre of their life. There was no real concept of getting ahead. We hadn’t invented complex things, like coding, law, engineering, etc. The majority of the value created in the world was automated by soil.

Maybe AI is here to return us back to this more simple, more pleasurable way of life. AI and robots do all the stuff, and human existence returns to be about festivals, families, friendships and faith - exactly like it was for centuries.

We’re about to see the biggest peaceful transfer of wealth in all of human history.

And most entrepreneurs are completely unprepared for it.

The baby boomers own half the economy.

Half the businesses. Half the real estate. Half the share value. Half the pensions.

And all of those assets are going to move to Gen X and millennials.

Every decade, the baby boomers have exploded something new. In the 70s, used cars. The 80s, mortgages. The 90s, home electronics. More recently, the stock market.

But now, they're moving firmly into retirement.

As a result of demographics and AI, we are going to see a great flood of money in the economy.

Warren Buffett said it best: be greedy when others are fearful.

Most people are fearful right now. Most people are saying the world is ending.

I think this is the time to lean in. To innovate. To be ready.

You shouldn’t be scared. You should be excited.

You should be turning customers away.

I believe there is a fundamental flaw in the way most businesses attract new leads and sales and it leaves the customer with too much control.

When you look at brands like Rolex or Ferrari, they turn customers away all the time. Customers feel lucky and excited if they have the opportunity to buy. These brands have a specific sales process that changes the dynamic of the relationship.

99% of businesses don't do this and they end up waiting around for customers "consider their options".

I recently spent some time analysing what makes the most successful companies different, and I've decided to hold a stand alone workshop this week where I break down what I'm seeing so you can replicate a similar sales approach in your business.

Here's an uncomfortable truth. 

When you explain who you are and what you do, people immediately judge you and put you into one of three buckets:

1. You're a newbie (you're just starting out)

2. You're a worker bee (someone who gets paid an hourly rate)

3. You're a Key Person of Influence (someone who knows what they're talking about)

In category 3, people know they'd be lucky to work with you and would jump through hoops for the chance to do so.

Largely, how people judge you depends on how you introduce yourself.

The exact same person, depending on what they draw from and what they explain about themselves, is either going to sound like they're doing something new or they're leveraging incredibly valuable intellectual property, and they should be taken seriously.

Best tip I can give you if you're launching a new business this year... 

Start with the 150 test.

My minimum threshold: can I get 150 people on a waitlist, and how hard was it?

Pick three ideas, then run three landing pages: “We’re launching X for this type of person, solving this type of problem.”

Give a reason to join, e.g., an exclusive WhatsApp group, useful content, and an early-bird discount.

Then ask five questions and start warming the list up.

In the age of AI, what's the safest play? 

I just got back from LA filming a new episode of Diary of a CEO. We talked about AI and what’s changing in the next 18 months, what’s being automated, and what’s safe.

Most jobs where someone tells you what to do, or where you do something repetitive, are in trouble.

But one thing AI can’t replace is being known.

If you’re known, liked and trusted by a community, that position can’t be taken away from you. If anything, it's going to be amplified.

Growth is about removing friction. Profit is about adding friction. 

If you want to grow, give more and more away for free with no strings attached. Be careful though, it costs money or time to give value freely - be sure you
Can afford it. 

If you want to profit, make people wait or make them jump through hoops. Get people to join a waiting list, get them to apply for access, create barriers and conditions that justify the prices. 

If you’re really smart you can do both at once. You can give away tons of value for free while also having hoops to jump through if someone wants to work with you or buy your premium offer.

The way I generate leads for my businesses honestly feels like cheating. 

Typically, landing pages achieve conversion rates of 2-4%. 

If you want to create more leads, you can either increase the number of people who see your landing page, or you can increase the conversion rate. 

But increasing the conversion rate is often simpler and faster. 

Using ScoreApp we have some landing pages performing at 20-40% conversion. 

This is world-class - you can't expect much better than that. 

I've got one landing page that makes me $22,436 a day. 

But here's the catch, if you want to convert that attention into revenue, you need to set things up in a specific way.

All the home runs I've had started the exact same way. 

An idea, then a simple landing page that described our new approach to something. 

We'd talk about the features we're building and the type of person the product is for.

And then we'd ask people to join the waiting list if they're interested, so we could send out more information when the thing is ready.

We don't just collect names and email addresses, we ask 5 or 6 questions too and collect all the data.

If we get a great result, we go ahead with it. If we don't, it's on to the next idea.

The Profit Motive is the most misunderstood part of capitalism. 

Profit isn't about greed, excess, or exploitation. Those things exist but they're violations of the profit motive, not expressions of it.

Profit is a constraint. The most powerful constraint ever applied to human innovation.

I've built companies. I've sat inside the machine. And I can tell you the profit motive doesn't whisper "take more from the market". It screams "waste less - find a way to make things happen better, faster, cheaper without spending more".

When a business wastes materials, over-hires or gets too excited about an untested idea it loses profit. When it runs an inefficient process the market doesn't send a stern email. It just quietly starts bleeding you out. Profit is the scorecard, but it's also the immune system. It identifies waste and destroys it fast.

Toyota didn't build the most efficient manufacturing system in history because they were enlightened Buddhists. They built it because every idle machine, every unnecessary step, every unit of excess inventory was costing them money. Lean manufacturing isn't an ideology, It's what happens when smart people are forced to eliminate waste or lose everything.

What happens when you remove the profit motive?? Does human greed disappear? No, but the constraint does. 

Every government project that arrived late, double the budget, half the promise is an example. The Birmingham Council budgeted £19M to migrate software and spent £220M and failed to deliver the project. The Australian Government spent $96.5M on a weather website - two web developers replicated it for free in an afternoon. 

Many smart people with genuinely good intentions work in and around government but you cannot want your way to efficiency. Good intentions don't punish waste. And organisations that can't go bankrupt don't punish waste.
Remove the profit constraint and you don't get a more humane system. You get a system that figures out very quickly that obscene waste has no consequences. And then it optimises for something else. Usually size. Complexity. The appearance of importance. Bureaucracies don't grow because people are corrupt. They grow because growth is how you survive inside a system without consequences.

Free market capitalism has driven more material efficiency than any government mandate in history not because businesses are virtuous, but because waste is expensive and profit is a powerful driver.

You want a sustainable planet? You want to eliminate waste? You want people's needs met as efficiently as possible? You need the profit motive working properly (paired with competition). Without the profit motive, you get unbridled excess with little to show for it - like we see in Government. 

We've spent decades telling people the profit motive is a villain instead of realising it's a hero.

People who are reluctant to change to AI will simply not be able to survive.

I've seen this before.

The same thing happened with another technology that people dismissed as a fad.

They were wrong then. And the people dismissing AI are wrong now.

The uncomfortable truth about AI spending ... 20 million jobs might have to disappear for it to make financial sense.

Data Centre Magazine reports that AI infrastructure spending over the next three years is set to top $1 trillion. About 65% of that is technology with a short lifespan of three to five years. Another way to think about it: the industry needs to sustain roughly $220 billion per year in depreciating assets just to maintain the current pace.

Capital-intensive companies at maturity tend to run about 20% capex costs. At that ratio, this level of infrastructure spend implies roughly $1 trillion in annual AI subscription revenue needing to exist somewhere in the economy.

Where does that revenue come from? If we look at comparable innovations like software and cloud computing, the revenue models break down into consumer subscriptions, business subscriptions, and advertising. We know 95% of consumers won't pay much. We know advertisers will pay, but only if it's cheaper than social media. That leaves the obvious candidate: businesses replacing workers with AI (or creating new growth - but this isn't yet obvious).

So how many workers would it take to justify the $1 trillion per year in projected AI spending?

Assume 65% of the bill gets paid by businesses using AI for "productivity gains" (headcount reduction). For a business to replace a worker, the AI needs to be at least 50% cheaper than the person. To spend $650 billion on AI, the labour saving would need to total $1.3 trillion annually.

The average US worker earns around $65,000 per year. That means roughly 20 million jobs would need to be replaced by AI to justify the spending required to justify current AI investment levels.

A critic will point out that technology creates new jobs, that my assumptions are broad, and that US wage figures don't reflect a global workforce. Fair. But those objections don't change the central question, they just adjust the scale of the answer. Whether it's 10 million jobs or 30 million, whether it happens in America or the Philippines, the capital being deployed right now has disruption of that magnitude baked into its business case.

In 2026, “more leads” won’t be the advantage.

Smart leads will.
