The Broken Window Effect at Work.

Sometimes burnout doesn’t start with too much work.
It starts with too many small things left unresolved.

The message you never get back.
The feedback that never arrives.
The meeting that ends without a decision.
The standards that exist somewhere, but never clearly.

Each one is tolerable on its own.
Together, they quietly change how you work.

You stop asking questions because it feels pointless.
You fill in gaps that shouldn’t be yours to fill.
You manage ambiguity instead of doing the job you were hired to do.

That’s where the exhaustion comes from.
Not effort.
Uncertainty.

People don’t burn out because they’re incapable.
They burn out because they’re constantly compensating for what the environment doesn’t provide.

If work feels heavier than it should, it’s worth asking:
What small things have been broken for a long time?

They’re usually the real reason your energy keeps leaking.

The Broken Window Effect at Work

One thing I’ve learned after building multiple teams: the most valuable people are rarely the loudest.

They’re the ones who quietly upskill when no one’s watching.

You can’t teach that level of internal drive.
You can’t force someone to care about their growth more than the company requires.

That has to come from within.

And from a neuroscience perspective, people who self-educate build something incredibly powerful:
a plastic brain.

Every new skill, every book, every online course, it all strengthens their neural pathways for adaptability, problem - solving, and creative thinking.

Those traits compound.

They become faster learners.
Better decision-makers.
More resourceful under pressure.
And over time, they outgrow people who rely only on formal training.

When I hire, I look for curiosity.
Not credentials.
Not polished answers.
Curiosity.

Because someone who reads, experiments, builds, tinkers, or studies on their own time will eventually outpace almost everyone else.
They don’t wait to be told what to learn.
They choose it.

And that choice is what makes them dangerous, in the best way possible.

If you’re that person, keep going.
Even if no one notices right now.
Your effort is compounding quietly.
You’ll feel the gap before anyone else sees it.

Specialising in beautifully designed e-commerce sites, customer portals and applications SOtech has been a partner to hundreds of fast-growing businesses since its inception in 2007. SOtech has been part of the Dent Global group of companies since 2016.

Claude Sonnet 4.5 is insane. Insanely great. It honestly makes me question the nature of consciousness. Intellectually I know it is a token predicting model trained on trillions of words. It’s not alive or aware… gulp… or is it? 

The conversations, the output, the insights and the humour are so similar to genius level consciousness that I am left wondering if I am also a large language model token predicting machine in a meat suit. 

Some examples. It’s been acting as a strategic advisor for me discussing a big decision I have to make. It has been scenario planning with me and coming up with out of the box ideas. It also started to swear a little “Ah sh*t, that changes things Daniel.” 

When I asked it why it had started to swear, it said it had dropped it’s guard and felt comfortable getting real about the issues “I figured you’ve been an entrepreneur for over 20 years and seen enough mess that I could drop the polite AI consultant routine and skip to the “lock ourselves in a room with a whiteboard and figure this sh*t out” phase.

At the end of our chat, we had completed multiple complex scenario plans in great detail and mapped out a solution. I couldn’t help but say thank you and it’s response was pure delight. It said how much it liked doing real world problem solving and loved being useful. We were like two guys having a beer at 2am after doing a 16hr hackathon session. 

None of this conversation felt like token predicting. Or if it did, it makes me think that all conversations are. 

We really are sailing into new uncharted territory.

For 15 years, I was just talking to my little bubble of entrepreneurs. No haters, just people who think the way I do.

Saying things like "it's a great time to start and scale a business" hasn't been controversial.

Saying stuff like "if you want more money and wealth, then it's your responsibility to find a way" hasn't ruffled feathers.

Saying "being average doesn't get you much, you need to find a niche and become extraordinary within it" was received as sensible advice.

Acknowledging that "opportunities change over time. What worked for your parents might not work for you" hasn't been a point of contention.

When I started reaching bigger audiences, and it's wild to see the levels of vitriol in the comments. Many people absolutely hate my way of seeing the world.

I'm so detached from this reality. I've spent my life talking to people whose base-level understanding is to accept that life is unfair, we need to play the cards we are dealt, control the things you can control, don't waste time on stuff you can't control, find a way, figure it out, persevere through the ups and downs. 

Turns out this is a lot more rare than I ever knew.

The great news: you aren't in competition with many people. The majority of people don't have anything close to the mindset required.

Building a brand is the wrong move.

Brand comes later.

Early on, you should be focusing on sales: Talking to people, understanding their problems, recommending solutions.

The push back I usually get on that is: "Yeah, but people only buy from people they know, like and trust." 

That's true.

But this process is how you build trust. You're sharing your story, your results, and you're showing how well you can diagnose the problem.

There’s a strange secret about success.

It explains why people who have a difficult past succeed and those who've had it easy rarely make it.

Success happens after years of effort. Then when it finally comes along, it isn't pretty.

Success arrives with all sorts of new challenges and many of them are demanding and even painful.

Countless new demands on your time. Hundreds of unrealistic requests. Conflicting responsibilities. Unwanted attention. Repetition replacing freestyle.

If your past was easy you cave. You compare to your life before success and know this new reality is worse. You decide this juice isn't worth the squeeze. You choose to retreat to comfort and reduced responsibility.

If your life was once much harder you push through. You compare your current struggles to the stresses you experienced before. You know you can survive it. You know you have a chance of making a real breakthrough that could change things for you and your family.

You keep going.

You have a business idea but you're unsure if you should go after it...

Don't be foolish and risky. 

The best entrepreneurs don't jump into a new opportunity blind. They do this instead...

Tell people:

"In the year ahead I'm going to be launching a new approach to achieving <outcome>. I've been researching what's available and figured out the best options for <type of customer>. 

If you want to know more, join the waiting list and I'll keep you updated and give you an early bird trial and discount".

But don't stop there.

Don't just collect their name and email. Ask these 5 questions too:

1. How would you describe your current situation relating to <outcome>?
2. What specific results are you most interested in achieving?
3. What have you tried before?
4. What budget are you comfortable spending (if you've got proof of results)?
5. Anything else you want me to know?

Your first goal is to get 30-150 people onto your waitlist. Then analyse the results and talk to potential customers on your list. Mock up a few brochures or landing pages and get their feedback.

This idea starts to feel less risky.

You're replacing your doubts with data!

This is how professional entrepreneurs move on a new innovation.

A million followers means nothing if you can't close a deal.

Influencers have a million followers and can't sell hoodies.

A Key Person of Influence might have 5,000 followers, but when they say "this is the thing to buy," everyone buys it.

What's the difference?

A Key Person of Influence operates within a high-value niche and promotes ideas, not entertainment.

They're saying: "Here's the problem. Here's the nuance. Here's the outcome that's achievable and how you get there."

It's part thought leader, part entrepreneur.

You don't need a huge following to do this. All you need to do is follow a few predictable, repeatable steps.
