People think leadership is about making decisions fast. It isn't.

On bad days, it's easy to fire off an email, shut down an argument, tell yourself you're solving problems by acting quickly.

Speed masks a lack of control.

The worst mistakes I've watched happen didn't come from slowness. They came from people moving too fast, the impulsive reply, the knee-jerk reaction, the power move made on autopilot.

In tense environments, nothing hurts a team more than a stressed-out leader transmitting panic. The impact ripples out. Slack messages get clipped. Meetings feel like a minefield. Results slip.

You want one practical edge: Stop. Breathe. Wait.

A short pause before acting feels trivial. But it breaks the chain. It turns pouring gas on a fire into building a firebreak.
