Understanding SQL: How We Write It vs. How It's Executed

Have you ever wondered why your SQL queries don't always run as expected? 
- There's a difference between how we write SQL and how the database processes it. 

Let's break it down:

When we write SQL queries, we typically follow this sequence:

- SELECT
- TOP
- DISTINCT
- FROM
- WHERE
- GROUP BY
- HAVING
- ORDER BY
- LIMIT

Execution Order:
However, the database engine processes these commands in a different order:

- FROM - Identifies the data source.
- WHERE - Filter records based on conditions.
- GROUP BY - Aggregates data into groups.
- HAVING - Filter groups based on conditions.
- SELECT - Retrieves specified columns.
- ORDER BY - Sorts the result set.
- TOP/LIMIT - Limits the number of rows in the result set.

Data Engineers' Handbook

Databricks vs Azure Data Factory is one of the most common debates in data.

It is also one of the most misunderstood.

Because the real question is not:
Which one is better?

The real question is:
What job is each tool supposed to do?

In real projects, they solve different problems.

That is why trying to force one tool to do everything usually creates problems later.

Here is the simple version:

Use Azure Data Factory for:
orchestration
scheduling
data movement
workflow dependencies
system integration

Use Databricks for:
large scale processing
complex transformations
Spark workloads
advanced analytics
engineering heavy logic

In other words:

ADF helps you move and orchestrate.

Databricks helps you process and transform.

That is why the best answer in many real projects is not ADF or Databricks.

It is ADF and Databricks.
Used properly.

The biggest mistakes happen when teams:
put orchestration logic where it does not belong
use heavy engineering tools for simple integration work
choose tools based on hype instead of responsibility

Good architecture is not about choosing the louder tool.

It is about assigning the right responsibility to the right tool.

That is what improves delivery, supportability, and scale.
