My Story

Three years ago, I moved from Holland to the Portuguese mountains to escape burnout.

That wake-up call changed everything.

I stopped trying to push through my dysregulation and instead started treating through somatic work and regulation.

Now I help other sensitive and neurodiverse founders do the same.

People overcomplicate getting back in shape.

Listen, if you work in corporate and you’re in your 30s, 40s or 50s trying to rebuild your health:

Avoid:

• Jumping into extreme diets
• Training 6 days a week out of guilt
• Copying 20-year-old fitness influencers
• Changing everything at once

Instead:

• Lift weights 3 times per week (30' max)
• Eat mostly whole foods (80/20 rule)
• Go to bed at the same time every night
• Walk more than your current baseline

Focus on this for the first 30 days.

I’ve started introducing this in more of my coaching sessions:

Walking pads.

For the past 3.5 months I’ve been working with Andrew Frentress, and the transformation has been incredible, physically stronger, mentally sharper, and showing a completely different level of discipline and mindset in both his work and daily routines.

Recently we added something new to our sessions.

Since he kept seeing me doing coaching calls while walking on my walking pad, we made a deal:

If I walk during the session…
he walks too.

So now our coaching sessions happen on Zoom + walking pads.

Interestingly, this isn’t a new idea.

There’s actually a concept called walk-and-talk coaching/therapy, where movement can help conversations flow more naturally and ideas surface more easily.

And honestly… I can see why.

More energy.
Increased focus.
Ideas flow faster.
And the conversation feels different.

So I might start introducing more meetings like this when the opportunity is right.

Your beer belly isn’t “normal”

It’s not “just aging”
And it’s definitely not harmless.

Somehow we normalized this:

A man in his 30s / 40s gains 15–25 lbs around his midsection…
Laughs about it in the office…
Calls it “dad bod.”

That soft belly isn’t just fat.

It’s visceral fat.

And research shows this type of fat can actually change the structure of your heart over time.

You can have:

• “Normal” cholesterol
• “Okay” weight
• A wardrobe that still fits

And still be increasing your cardiac risk every single year.

The fitness industry sold you abs.
The health reality is much darker.

Visceral fat is metabolically active.
It drives inflammation.
It increases blood pressure.
It forces your heart to work harder.

Two men.
Same weight.

One carries fat under the skin.
The other carries it around his organs.

One looks fine.
One is quietly stressing his cardiovascular system.

And to be fully transparent: 

You don’t need a crazy biohack.
You don’t need a detox.
You don’t need to “cut harder.”

You need to:

• Lift consistently
• Walk daily
• Sleep properly
• Review your eating habits
• Stop using alcohol as stress management

Your heart won’t send you a warning notification.

It adapts… until it can’t.

Yesterday, I told a potential client not to work with me.

He came in wanting an aggressive fat loss phase.

More sessions.
Lower calories.
“Just push me harder.”

Old-school coaching would say: perfect, sign him.

Instead, I said:

“You don’t need another hard phase.
You need a new standard for how you operate.”

Five seconds of silence.

That same decision led to:

• Immediate trust
• A real conversation about why he keeps restarting

Because here’s what was obvious:

His issue wasn’t effort.
It wasn’t discipline.
It wasn’t knowledge.

It was the pattern.

Locked in for 3 weeks.
Travel hits.
Stress spikes.
Sleep drops.
Training fades.
Guilt builds.
“Reset Monday.”

Sound familiar?

Here are 3 reasons that approach worked:

1️⃣ It attacked the real bottleneck

Most high-performing men don’t fail when motivation is high. They fail when life gets too much.

That’s not a calorie problem.
That’s a pressure problem.

2️⃣ It removed the “more is better” illusion

More grind feels productive.
But if your system collapses under stress, more only accelerates the crash.

3️⃣ It shifted the goal

Anyone can go hard for 3 weeks.
Few can stay steady for 6+ months.

The best part?

I didn’t push.
I didn’t create fake urgency.
I didn’t "handle objections"

I raised the bar on what real change looks like.

Most high-performing men don’t need a tougher plan.

They need a health operating system that survives pressure.

I was making good money and using a waffle to manage stress I didn’t want to sit with.

Not the waffle specifically.
What it represented: the deal I made with myself every evening.

One bad day led to one bad choice.
Then another.

Repeat that pattern long enough, and it shows up everywhere.

· Energy crashing at 2pm and never really coming back.
· Sleep that doesn’t restore you.
· A body getting softer and weaker.
· A mood that turns dark fast.

I thought I was managing.

I was numbing.

The real shift didn’t come from cutting carbs, doing a 90-day sugar detox, or downloading another fitness app.

· It came when I got specific help.
· Built structure around my actual schedule.
· Learned to stop negotiating with myself.

The guy on the right is 10 years older.
Same workload (if not more).
Different identity.

That’s the difference.

Everyone is debating AI right now.
Will it replace writers? Coaches? Whole industries?

I think we’re missing the real issue.

The biggest change I’m seeing isn’t about technology replacing people. It’s about attention slowly eroding.

The professionals I work with are intelligent and capable. They know what to eat, they know they should train, they understand sleep is important. 

Information is not the problem anymore.

What’s getting in the way is constant mental stimulation.

From the moment the day starts, there is input. Notifications, emails, meetings, content, AI helping them produce faster, decide faster, consume faster. The brain never really powers down. It just moves from one stimulus to the next.

The human nervous system was never designed for this level of constant input.

And when your brain is flooded all day, mastering your own discipline feels very challenging. You skip the workout because you’re mentally drained. You scroll because it feels easier than being still. Sleep becomes lighter, your recovery drops and your decisions become reactive.

Most people think they need a better strategy or a stricter plan.

In reality, many of them need fewer inputs and stronger boundaries.

I’m not anti-technology. I use AI, I build my business online, but there’s a difference between leveraging technology and being constantly pulled by it.

The real divide over the next few years won’t be between people who use AI and those who don’t.

It will be between people who can regulate their attention and those who can’t.

Focus is becoming rare.

And anything rare becomes valuable, that’s the edge.

This is the part nobody talks about.

Perfectionism doesn’t make you stronger.

It makes you fragile.

When your standard is “all or nothing”…

One missed workout = failure.
One dinner out = damage done.
One bad night of sleep = what’s the point?

That’s not discipline.

That’s ego tied to perfection.

Real consistency isn’t built on perfect weeks.

It’s built on imperfect weeks handled well.

The men who transform long-term aren’t the most extreme.

They’re the most adaptable.

They don’t drown when life is out of control.

Some people were surprised by a few rankings.

For example:

Coffee right after waking isn’t necessarily bad.

But many people notice smoother energy if they wait a bit or drink it with food  especially if they’re sensitive to caffeine.

Still, the bigger picture stays simple.

The routines that consistently improve energy aren’t complicated:

• Sleep well
• Get early daylight
• Move your body
• Fuel properly
• Protect your focus in the morning

No hacks.

Just fundamentals done consistently.

And ironically, those are usually the hardest habits to maintain.

Your morning routine is a distraction.

You wake up at 5am.
Cold shower.
Journal.
Protein shake.
10 minutes of meditation.

And by 10pm?

You’re on your third glass of wine, doom-scrolling, eating whatever’s in the fridge because the day completely broke you.

The morning is clean.

The evening is where your real habits live.

Most men I speak to are proud of their morning routine.

It gives them a sense of control before the chaos takes over.

But fixing the first hour while ignoring the other 23 is like polishing the hood of a car with no engine.

The real damage happens at night.

The cortisol that never came down after the 3pm crisis call.

The sleep you keep cutting short to watch one more episode.

No cold plunge undoes that.

What actually shifts things:

• A wind-down routine that protects your sleep as hard as your alarm protects your morning

• Looking honestly at why you reach for comfort at 8pm

• Building consistency in the evening so you stop trying to manufacture energy at 6am

Most people optimise the first hour of the day.

Very few look honestly at the last 3.

Four guys asked me about Ozempic in the last 10 days.

Same question every time:

"Is it worth it?"

Short answer?

Yes.
It works.

The weight loss data is real.
Appetite suppression is strong.
People lose significant weight on GLP-1s.

In clinical trials, roughly 25–40% of the weight lost is lean mass, not body fat.

After 40, you're already losing muscle naturally.
About 1% per year.
And it becomes harder to rebuild with age.

Add:

- A stressful job
- Poor sleep
- Long work weeks
- Inconsistent strength training

And you accelerate that loss.

Losing lean mass isn't just cosmetic.

It lowers your daily calorie burn.
It reduces strength and physical performance.
It affects insulin sensitivity.
It makes long-term weight maintenance harder.

Then comes the second issue.

Most men eventually stop.

Cost.
Side effects.
Supply.

And when they do?

The weight often comes back.

Because appetite returns to baseline.
And if the habits didn't change, neither did the environment that caused the gain.

That's not just my opinion.
That's what the discontinuation data shows.

So is Ozempic the answer?

For men who are clinically obese, metabolically compromised, and working with a doctor.

Yes, it can be a legitimate medical tool.

I'm not anti-medication.

But for the 40-year-old carrying 15-20 extra pounds, running on stress and broken sleep?

The drug doesn't fix the root problem.

It suppresses appetite.
It doesn't build strength.
It doesn't fix sleep.
It doesn't change your relationship with stress.

You have two options (unless you're in a true clinical case):

1️⃣ Take the shortcut.
Ask your doctor.
And while you're there, ask about muscle mass, not just the scale.

2️⃣ Build capacity.
Learn to lift consistently.
Fix your sleep.
Eat in a way that fits your real life.
Build habits that don't depend on a prescription.

One works while you're on it.
The other works for the next 30 years (no question asked)

I told myself I didn't need a coach for 3 years.

I was the guy who figured things out. 

Read the books. 
Did the research. 
Handled problems at work. 

I wasn't the type to pay someone to tell me what to do with my own body.

That was the story I kept telling myself.

• While I was hitting snooze three times and still showing up to calls exhausted.

• While I was loosening my belt one notch and telling myself it was the cut of the trousers.

• While I was pouring a second drink on a Tuesday because I didn't know what else to do with the tension.

• While the anxiety got louder every Sunday night.

The voice in my head had a list of reasons not to hire anyone.

• "You've handled harder than this."
• "You just need to be more consistent."
• "A coach is for people who can't motivate themselves."
• "Sort it out after Q3."

What I didn't see at the time: that voice wasn't protecting me. It was keeping me stuck.

The trigger came at a pool party.

No suit to hide behind, no title to lead with. Just a body that didn't match the story I'd been telling myself. And behind it, a level of stress and exhaustion I'd gotten very good at hiding. 

This time, I couldn't look away.
I messaged a coach that same evening.

Because I finally admitted I didn't figure this out.

6 months later I was in the best shape I'd been in years. 
Sleeping through the night. 
Energy that lasted past 2pm.

A year after that I left corporate, got certified, and started building my own practice.

The 3 years I spent "figuring it out" cost me more than the coaching ever did.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱 "𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱", 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 

Telling someone to "just try harder" is such terrible advice.

The people I help are already trying hard in their lives.
They go to work every day.
They take care of their families.
They get stuff done.

The problem isn't that they're lazy.
The problem is that their brain is already full.

Adding exercise and healthy habits on top of everything else is really tough when you're already exhausted.

In simple terms, willpower is like a phone battery and it runs out.
When you're tired or stressed, it's the first thing to die.
So just "being more disciplined" doesn't really work.

There's another problem too.
This advice blames the person instead of looking at the situation around them.

Maybe their schedule is too packed.
Maybe their time-management is not ideal. 
Maybe their environment makes it hard to make good choices.

Real change happens when you build a system that makes healthy habits easy, not when you just try to force yourself harder.

Also, telling someone to "just do it" can make them feel ashamed and burnt out. Which is counterproductive...

And for people with ADHD, it's even more challenging. Their brain works differently, and they need different strategies, not just more "willpower".

So no it's not about wanting it more.
It's about finding a plan that actually fits YOUR life.

That's why having a coach who really gets you and your situation can be one of the best things you do for yourself.

What's the worst advice you've ever been given?

The suit hides a lot.

Long hours.
Stress.
Skipped workouts.
Late dinners.
Another drink to unwind.

As long as the suit stays on…

You can convince yourself everything is under control.

Then the moment comes.

The beach.
A pool party.
Or a mirror you can’t avoid.

And suddenly the gap is impossible to ignore.

The version of you the world sees.
And the body you actually live in.

Most men walk away from that moment.

They put the suit back on.

And pretend they didn’t see it.

I didn’t.

That discomfort ended up being the most useful signal my body had sent me in years.

It forced an honest question:

How long had I been ignoring it?

Now I work with men who’ve had that exact moment.

The ones who actually change are the ones who stop walking away from it.

The gap you feel right now is information. 

The question is whether you're ready to listen to it.
