Hey Mark Carney and Mélanie Joly, 

Canada should create a special economic zone to keep our best founders here and attract more of them.

Canada is great at inputs. We fund research and train talent.

But we do not have a place that makes it a no brainer to build and stay here.

A special zone could change that. 

The point is simple: make one region competitive with places like San Francisco.

It could mean stronger R&D incentives, zero percent capital gains on founder equity in the zone, faster founder visas, access to Canadian AI compute, and fewer hoops for investment.

Keep companies close to the research and the universities.

If we had to pick one spot, Waterloo seems like a strong candidate.

It keeps top talent here, it is close to capital, and the tech ecosystem is already there.

Meet my brother, Jacques Thibodeau.

For a number of years, he’s been working on a hard question: “How do we make sure super-powerful AI doesn’t go off the rails?”

Jacques has been working in AI for 10 years. He worked as an AI safety researcher for 3+ years and thinking about how to reduce risks from advanced AI.

He created the Alignment Research Literature Dataset, which was used by both OpenAI and Anthropic, and writes regularly on his blog, Aligned to Flourish.

Right now he’s in stealth, building at the intersection of automated science and security.

His long-term goal is pretty simple (and very big): less unintentional suffering, fewer existential risks, more human flourishing.

If you’re into AI, his stuff is worth following. He is well-known for his sober takes on the topic.
