My role is to help UTC@MediaCityUK bring the gap between the creative digital industry and the next generation of it's workers.

Because the creative and digital industries depend on innovation, so it’s vital that skills continually evolve. Yet it’s also widely accepted that there’s a shortage of people with the necessary abilities – whether academic, technical or practical – to meet the industries’ needs.

The Manic Pre-Holiday Scramble!

There’s an odd ritual many of us follow before going on holiday. We cram five days of work into two, agree to meetings we don’t need to attend, and insist on “getting everything sorted” before daring to switch on our out-of-office. By the time we reach the airport, we’re exhausted, wired, and somewhat resentful of the holiday we were meant to look forward to!

I know this pattern well. I coach leaders on how to manage energy, set boundaries, and work with intention… yet I still catch myself doing the pre-holiday sprint. A little dose of my own medicine wouldn’t go amiss as I’m heading off at the end of next week.

I think the problem isn’t the holiday. It’s the mindset.

We treat taking time off as a disruption to work rather than a necessary part of sustainable performance. We behave as though the world might collapse without us for a week or two.

The internal driver is often something like: “I must be responsible… I must be in control… I mustn’t drop the ball.”

Great intentions – crap execution.

Here’s a more grown-up, psychologically informed way of approaching it. Four suggestions…

1. Ditch the idea of clearing the decks

Perfectionism ruins holidays before they start. Instead of trying to clear the decks, focus on making a smooth transition.

Two questions to ask yourself:

What absolutely must be completed before I go? (Be honest – the list is shorter than you think.)

What can be intentionally paused or picked up after my return?

Strong leaders don’t do everything. They prioritise wisely.

2. Set expectations and stick to them

Tell people what you’ll deal with before you leave and what will wait. Don’t over-promise to appear committed. Clear, calm communication earns more respect than frantic availability.

If it helps, use a simple message:

“I’m prioritising X and Y before I go. Everything else will be picked up after I’m back. Shout if anything genuinely changes.”

3. Manage your compulsive drivers

This is where the psychology kicks in. The feeling of rush isn’t caused by the volume of tasks – it’s caused by the story you tell yourself about taking time off.

Common scripts I hear from coachees (and the ones in my head, too)

“I need everything sorted before I go.”
“I feel bad about taking time off when we are busy”
“I can’t let people down.”

If any of those sound familiar, try reframing:

“Rested me = better me.”
“People grow when I let go” – hey, that even rhymes!
“People will cope. I’m not that indispensable.”

4. Have a clean break

Anxiety thrives in ambiguity. Choose a firm time and date when you’ll switch off. Treat it as non-negotiable. Build a small ritual around it – write your handover list, tidy your desk, close the laptop properly.

And stop saying “I’ll just check emails occasionally”. You won’t relax, and in my experience, it just annoys people!
