NIU has an enormous alumni base - more than 200,000 - so audience targeting and segmenting was key to delivering messages with impact. I partnered with the communications director of the NIU Foundation to develop the first-ever communications standards guide for the NIU Division of Advancement. Always eager to learn something new, I learned basic HMTL coding to create better web pages and emails and eventually became the go-to person on campus in using the Alumni Association's CMS.

Two weekly community newspapers, each with a loyal following - and one editor. I supervised a staff of three plus freelancers and did everything from soup to nuts - from planning an editorial calendar to writing stories to laying out pages and sending them to press.

In my first year as editor of The MidWeek, I oversaw the paper's physical move from one office location to another, began social media accounts and participated in a full redesign of its website. I sharpened the paper's news focus and worked to improve the quality of storytelling and efficient use of resources. At the end of my third year in this position, I also took on the role of editing the Valley Life, which I had helped to completely rebrand and redevelop in the months prior.

Sourcing, reporting and writing anywhere from 10 to 20 stories a week, I learned to write clean, accurate copy to specified lengths on tight deadlines in this thrilling occupation. I covered a variety of beats, garnering 20 state-level journalism awards over five years.
