Since 2005 I am an independent entrepreneur in gaming with our own company rcp, still being the bossmob. I learned my trade playing games since I was 4 years old, sold games for years (my first less official venture as a kid and later in a store), writing about them during university and finally nearly 5 years of Take2 Interactive where i experienced a lot, contributed 1% of the yearly revenue in a more rogue operation sanctioned by my direct bosses and also quite understood better what could go wrong and shouldnt be done; i call it the best paid education ever. 

When we started rcp in a souterrain (fancy word for basement) we wanted to empower developers while making better games with a sustainable process. Now rcp is 30 kick-ass people and the whole group of studios under the rcp family umbrella is around 450 game makers in multiple countries. I also decided early on that I could only do this in my home town if we also change perception of the industry as a whole; so I am an avid lobbyist/politician for games in Bavaria (MD of "GBM") and also on an European level (president of "EGDF"), support a lot of educational initiatives (ex. currently the chair of production at S4G in Berlin), founded the biggest German speaking game culture club, own 2300 games on steam (pretty decent % of played :) ) and started pro bono mentoring startup founders from other industries >7 years ago. From time to time you can meet me on a games event. Happy to connect! ;)

I love my job, I push myself for growth and I will never give up in general or playing games in particular.

Three days at NATO Defense College in Rome discussing gaming and its role in cognitive warfare

I had the honor and obvious (to me :)) duty to follow the call to attend and give a talk at a foresight conference last week. 

For 3 days i talked to members of Nato, academia, think tanks and industry about gaming and games and what i think the related risks, threats and forward options are.

We ate, drank, listened to talks, shared stories and debated.
For a few i think this might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship 😎 

Although Nato is a big entity with complicated stakeholder management, it never felt that anybody wasn´t passionate (incl. pointing out tensions and issues 🤓) and curious and deeply convinced of their mission. 

And as the cognitive space is one of the main battlefields now, this is what we need - cognitive resilient professionals with a cause and fighting the good fight while they keep on keeping on. 

So how Nato and connected stakeholders could work with games was part 2 after  my "call to arms - become a digital culture warrior" talk ´22 at reboot develop. After addressing game makers, this time it was servicemembers. Many of you can imagine what that means to me and my passion, conviction and curiosity 🙏

The conference has offered a truly unique forum to explore how the future of collective defence and deterrence might evolve, to unpack key uncertainties, and to debate the trends shaping tomorrow’s security environment.

At its core, foresight is about avoiding strategic surprise — ensuring the Alliance is ready for the Future Operating Environment. Bringing together Allies, Partners, Academia, and Industry made this dialogue richer and strengthened our shared foundation for strategic planning and capability development.

Grateful to all colleagues and partners for the inspiring exchange, forward-thinking ideas, and collective energy that made this event a success. The Allied Foresight Conference 2025 didn’t just reaffirm priorities — it reinforced unity and resolve across the Alliance.

I mentioned the visit to NATO Defense College for a foresight conference 3 weeks ago. 

Why did i go there and what did i talk about? 
I came with a call to action (matured version of the haka from my reboot talk :)) ofc

Why cognition and the mind? 
John boyd created a model and loop in the 70ties (i shared „updated“ versions incl. one from early this year from a dutch officer). Its in the end an ever repeated process to come to decisions and act. Obviously how you decide is very much based on your state of mind and what you learned and experienced before.

So yes, what you „consume“ as content matters :) 

It is my belief, that games are used and will be used extensively to shape our mental models. Especially our adversaries seem to get this for a while now. And games and gaming have been weaponized before even domestically (gamergate). Now with gamified media being as strong as ever (tiktok is more gamified media than social media in my pov, too), its high time to think about our cog. resilience but also how we go into the offensive more (aka conduct information maneuver - shoutout to another dutch officer :)).

In ww2 multiple film makers joined the war effort voluntarily and made training movies, documentaries and fiction films to increase the skill and will to fight, to boost the original antifa to be able to land in normandy and iwo jima. 

Us making death from above nearly 3 years ago was shaped and influenced by these very same beliefs and insights we collected over our lifes too - what shaped our identities :) 

And in my reality we are at war for quite a while now on this cognitive  battlefield. 
And we should build capacity, define the rules of engagement and feel compelled to defend forward, to stop being pushed in a self chosen corner.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ilkka Paananen overall, whom I’ve known since before he was even close to being that successful. So I know about the hardships and risks he and his team took to make Supercell fly.

I’m also well aware of what life is like for game developers in Finland, since we’ve had two teams there for many years. I know that Finland and Europe have supported his—and our—drive to innovate and to produce entertainment and culture at the same time.

For the first time in a while, I don’t quite understand the Commission—what is it they want to solve or address here? Why this drastic proposed change? It feels very unnecessary, not based on data or evidence showing this is needed. So I urge the Commission and all policymakers to revisit and revise this, not to harm the European games industry but to remain its ally. Especially since games are one of the few success stories in Europe’s digital space.

Why does Europe want to end one of its biggest tech success stories?

I've been watching European tech grow for 25 years. In that time, our continent has gone from being a minor player to producing global leaders.

But right now, potential regulations threaten to bring that progress to an end for one of Europe's few globally competitive industries: gaming. As I set out in this letter, EU proposals around digital coins are on track to fundamentally break how games work - and ruin the player experience for the millions of people who love games across the continent.

Thanks to Video Games Europe, European Games Developer Federation (EGDF) and my fellow gaming leaders for helping raise awareness of this issue. It's really important we speak up and work constructively with decision-makers to ensure new rules support our work to create a safe, fun player experience for everyone.

Let’s not kill one of Europe’s few tech success stories

Games Bavaria Munich e.V. ist nun seit 10 jahren aktiv in bayern

letzter großer erfolg ist erst ein paar tage und wochen alt (von ankündigung bis haushaltsbeschluss). Bayern verdoppelt somit seine gamesförderung auf >10 millionen pro jahr. 
Die förderung ist nun ca. 6x größer als vor 15 jahren.

2007 saß ich das erste mal im bayrischen wirtschaftsministerium bei einem meeting mit dem damaligen minister erwin huber (den ich als pragmatisch und mit viel drive erlebt hatte). 

in den 18 jahren haben wir recht viel ereicht aus meiner sicht - vom status des ungeliebten schwarzen schafs hin zu ministerium mit gamesreferat. 
Auf dem weg dahin der erste gaming event in einem dt. parlament, bayrischen ständen auf der games convention, delegationsreisen, großkopferten abendessen in schönen raumen jedes jahr und viele, viele gespräche, aktionen und mitstreiter später, haben wir die wohl bestausgestattete regionale förderung in europa (wenn nicht, bitte sharen :)) zu games.
