Today I’m proud to share the sizzle reel for Exchange Place — our forthcoming PBS documentary about the New Orleans secretarial school that quietly helped Black women integrate the white-collar workforce in the Deep South.

This story is personal. My sister, Jeanne, and I grew up in those classrooms, where 431 mostly Black women — and the teachers who learned alongside them — reshaped their own futures and the city’s workplaces.

We’re honored that PBS is helping bring this history forward at a moment when public media matters more than ever. The graduates of the Adult Education Center remain our role models of everyday courage, discipline, and determination.

Their story matters more now than ever.

Let’s be real for a second. Visibility is terrifying.


For years, I chose invisibility. 

I was building my business around hiding behind the camera because I was a "perfectionist" and a "videophobe".

I told myself I was just being strategic. 

But really? I was scared.

And what did I get as a result of being scared?

Slow growth and few clients.

When I talk to entrepreneurs, I hear the same four fears over and over. 

Which one is your monster?
🎥 1. The Camera. It feels like a giant eyeball staring at you. You freeze up. You worry about your hair or your background.
💻 2. The Tech. You think you need a Hollywood studio. You think editing is too hard. You get overwhelmed by all the buttons.
👀 3. The Judgment. "What will my colleagues think?" "What if I look silly?" We worry so much about what people will say behind our backs.
📉 4. The Failure. "What if I post it and zero people watch it?" "What if I make a mistake?".

Here is the secret I learned the hard way.

Your fear isn’t a barrier. It’s a doorway.

The people you are meant to serve are waiting on the other side of that door. 
↪️They don't need you to be perfect. 
↪️They need you to be real.
↪️They need your answers. 
↪️They need your help.

If the camera is too scary right now, that is okay! 

Start with a faceless video. 
📹Use B-roll. 
📹Use AI tools. 
📹Use screen recordings.

You can share your genius without showing your face.
🎯The goal isn't to be famous. 
🎯The goal is to be helpful.
