This morning I spilled coffee grounds all over my counter.

K-cups went up in price (again), so I bought grounds instead. More economical.
First fill? 

Dropped the reusable cup. Coffee everywhere.
My immediate thought: "Waste. Material loss. Process failure."

I live in a world where I see nearly everything as a playing field for continuous improvement.

Grocery aisles become supply chain exercises. Traffic jams become throughput problems. Spilled coffee becomes a lesson in handling procedures.
It can be painful.

But this is exactly how I help manufacturers, I see the waste they've learned to ignore.  The bottlenecks they think are "just how it is."  The hidden capacity sitting right there on the counter.

Can you relate to this?  I try to speak things into fruition, meaning I talk as if they are happening or that I am doing/taking action.  This creates a deeper obligation for me and drives commitment.  Obviously, there are times where I'm trying to drive things where I don't have ultimate control, when I miss goals due to that it is emotionally difficult for me.

Does anyone have some recommendations or other ways to look at this?  Again, looking to get it right, not be right.  I've run into enough emotional setbacks that I am seeking external perspective.

Want to find hidden capacity in your plant?

Try this exercise TODAY:
1 Walk the floor during shift change
2 Count how many people are standing around waiting
3 Ask: "What are you waiting for?"

The answers will tell you EXACTLY where your bottlenecks are:

→ "Waiting for the supervisor to approve this"
→ "Waiting for materials from the warehouse"
→ "Waiting for the machine to finish that job"
→ "Waiting for someone to tell me what's next"

Most manufacturers have 10-20% hidden capacity trapped in WAITING.

Not because people are lazy.

Because the SYSTEM doesn't give them what they need, when they need it.
Fix the system.  Unlock the capacity.
