You're not garnering their attention.

It's not their fault.
It's not 'the culture's' fault.

- Make it RELEVANT for the audience.
- Make it CLEAR in your message  

After coaching 300+ people 1:1, I can tell you the kicker is being RELEVANT.  Most people present to be 'clear' but never tie their message to what matters to the audience.

2) 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆.

People have to know at the outset 'what's in it for them' by listening and engaging your presentation.  

- Give CONTEXT - Why are we here?
- Give the TOPIC - "today we'll discuss..."
- Give the SO WHAT- "... so that..."

The 3rd part is the critical point.  What is the VALUE people will walk away with from your presentation or conversation. 

3) 𝗔𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸, 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲..."

It has to connect to something they care about.
If it doesn't, they'll disengage.

And yes, you can use the "This matters because..."  When you do, watch people reengage... they'll look up from their phones and laptops.

Last week, it was amazing to host a leadership session inspired by one of the most reluctant (and most inspiring!) businessmen of our time:
Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia.

We didn’t gather just to talk business and leadership.
We came together to talk about purpose, the planet, and what it means to lead in a way that truly serves. To ensure that the impact lasts for generations to come.

And also, for us to embrace where we are right now.

Because the truth is,
a lot of us are carrying more than we can name.

The political, social, and environmental state.
Personal challenges.
The disconnection we feel.
The pressure of work. 
The consequences of poor leadership.

➡️ If you lead a team, this affects you.
➡️ If you lead yourself, it still affects you.

As leaders, we have a responsibility:
To be well.
To do well.
To make things better for others.

🌊 Why this story?
Because Yvon never set out to be a businessman.
He called himself a climber, kayaker, surfer, blacksmith.

And by staying true to his values, 
he built one of the most respected companies:

• Build the best product
• Cause no unnecessary harm
• Use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis

Then one day, he landed on the Forbes Billionaires list...

He was appalled.
He reflected even more.
And he remembered why he was in business:

To leave a legacy.
And that legacy needed to be protected.

Not sold.
Not diluted.
But preserved: to guarantee the purpose would outlive him,
and the generations to come.

So he gave it away.
To a trust.
To the planet.
And for the Earth to be the only shareholder 🌎

Because in the end, he didn’t just want his “people to go surfing.”

He wanted them to live fully.
And he wanted his company to be an inspiration and example,
that true stewardship is not only possible,
but *necessary*.

✨ Lessons from the reluctant businessman:

Leadership isn’t about control, it’s about trust.
Culture is the real product, and it must be lived.
Growth is good, but only when it’s fully aligned with the values.

But most of the time, judgment means:
• They gave up on something you’re currently building
• They see the version of themselves they wanted to be
• They feel behind when they see you moving

None of that is about you.

People actually doing the work don’t judge. They’re too busy.

Everything changed when I got serious about one thing:

Daily discipline.

It wasn’t about big moves.
It was about doing one thing really well.

- More discipline
- Deeper resilience
- Greater patience
- More kindness

Above all:
Doing the ordinary with extraordinary presence.

For me, it looked like this:

I woke up two hours earlier than I needed to, every single day.
My streak was 2,000 days straight.

I practiced yoga, even just 10 minutes.
I meditated or journaled.
I drank my coffee with no phone.

I walked my dog.
Soaking in the rhythm of the quiet morning.

The morning routine was my practice.
That was my ordinary...
that became my extra-ordinary.

I was never a morning person.
I used to snooze my alarm every day.
I battled insomnia for a decade.
But I became one anyway.

As Bruce Lee once said:

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once,
but the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”

Mastery isn’t something big.
It’s quiet consistency.
Done over time.

We move fast…
in our work, our decisions, our plans for what’s next.

But small things have a way of reminding us to slow down.

Like a Chinese tea cup.

They’re designed without handles.
If the cup is too hot to hold,
it’s too hot to drink.

Simple, but one of the clearest lessons for life and work.

We often want things to happen now:
• The promotion we’ve been working toward
• The opportunity we thought would’ve come by now
• The clarity we assumed would follow all the inner work

If something feels “too hot to hold,”
it doesn’t mean you’re behind.
It means the timing is still catching up to your effort.

And sometimes, the smartest move isn’t to rush ahead,
but to hold your energy until the moment meets your momentum.

It may feel like a delay, but know that it isn’t a denial:
You’re still becoming the person who can step into it fully.

And when the moment is right,
you won’t have to force it.
You’ll be able to hold it.

We all carry pieces of where we came from.

I used to think happiness would come after the next big thing.

Until I realized I was chasing a moving finish line…

📍After the promotion
📍After moving to a new country
📍After settling into a new apartment

Each time I reached one of those milestones,
I thought: This is it.

But the feeling never lasted.
The arrival was an illusion.

Life kept moving.
The next challenge, the next goal, the next expectation always waiting.

I spent years in that loop:
chasing, striving, believing peace and fulfillment
were always one step away.

Until I realized: 
I was already living the life I thought I had to earn.

✨ This moment, right now, is not a waiting room for a better life.
It is life. ✨

So I began to slow down.
To breathe.
To return to what’s already here.

Fundamentally, what we want is peace 🌿 

Below aren’t steps or strategies.

They’re gentle reminders I return to,
especially when I forget that peace is always within reach.
(From Thich Nhat Hanh’s Peace Is Every Breath, a book I first read in 2012)

1. Peace is already here
↳ It’s not in the future or the next achievement.
It’s in this breath, this smile, this step.
When I stop running, I can feel it.

2. Come back to now
↳ When I feel pulled into striving or worry,
I use my breath to return to this moment.
There’s peace in just being where I am.

3. The present moment is a miracle
↳ There’s nothing to chase.
This moment is already full.
The only work is to notice.

So now, I try not to rush.
Not to wait for everything to be perfect.
Not to hold joy hostage to the next milestone.

This has been a decade in practice.
And I know it will be a practice for the rest of my life.

I pause.
I breathe.
And I let this moment be enough ❤️

If you want the promotion,

ask yourself why.


⤷ If it’s for the title…
You’re already Head of [your responsibility].
Show up like an owner now.


⤷If it’s for the money…
That’s valid.
But financial growth isn’t only tied to a title.
Sometimes it’s about using what you earn differently:
focusing on your own bottom line, and investing smarter.


⤷If it’s because someone else got promoted…
That’s comparison talking.
It’s the feeling that it’s not fair.
That you’re falling behind.

And yes, it stings.
But resentment isn’t a strategy.

Their timeline has nothing to do with your path.
Focus on the kind of growth you actually want.

Because you want to build, lead, guide:

Then start now.

Lead where you are.
Take ownership inside your current scope.
Stretch your impact before your job description stretches for you.

Leadership isn’t about having more people under you.
It’s about how you show up for the people around you.

And you don’t need a new title for that.

Meaning of Excellence for High Performers

We’ve trained our minds to be everywhere...
and with that, nowhere.

We call it being efficient.
But neuroscience calls it attention-splitting.

We multitask every day:
multiple tabs, two screens, three things at once.

Only 2.5% of us can truly do it well.
The rest?
We divide our focus, and pay the price.

🧠 Stanford researchers found that when we constantly juggle emails, chats, and notifications,
we train our brains to stay distracted.

It starts looking for the next thing.
Every notification feels important.
Focus slips away.

Even when we try to slow down,
part of our mind is still somewhere else.

We answer emails in meetings.
Scroll while watching a show.
Half-listen to loved ones while checking messages.

It feels productive,
but it’s presence lost.

➡️ High performance isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing one thing deeply.

→ Give it your full attention for 20 minutes.

You might think, that sounds simple.
And it is.
But that’s mindfulness:
simple, not easy.

So practice.

Focus isn’t just a skill.

Not because the hard changes,

were built for speed and survival.

Not for clarity, energy, or happiness.

So maybe it’s time we choose better ones.

None of this is about perfection.
It’s about choosing words that support the life you actually want,
and the leader you’re becoming.

Everything we repeat can be rewritten.

What if this isn’t about doing more.
But doing less.

Most of us are already overwhelmed.
We’re surrounded by input.
Podcasts. Books. Opinions.
Everyone telling us how to improve.

More tips.
More tricks.
And with that, longer to-do lists.

➡️ But what if the real shift is subtraction?

This is your permission, and your invitation, to reduce.

But do it intentionally.

Choose what you want less of:

• Less social
• Less news
• Less Netflix
• Less chaos**
• Less distractions
(**unpopular opinion: we often create our own chaos by being absent and reactive)

So if we keep saying “I’m doing too much”…

Then let’s mean it.

Let’s make *doing less* part of how we live, work, and lead.
