Roman Dibden is a lived experience leader and CEO of RISE UP, a movement disrupting the systems that lock young people out of opportunity. 

Born and raised in Manchester, Roman’s journey hasn’t followed a traditional path and that’s exactly why he leads differently. After leaving school early and navigating systemic disadvantage first-hand, he brings rare insight into the barriers young people face. That lived experience now fuels his mission to create inclusive pathways for those furthest from the labour market. 

At RISE UP, Roman has built a national-impact organisation rooted in authenticity, equity and ambition. The charity has supported hundreds of marginalised 16-30-year-olds into employment, training and progression especially care-experienced young people, those facing exclusion and young people from low-income backgrounds.   Through mentoring, employability training and bold employer partnerships, he’s reshaping what access really means. 

Roman was recently named one of eight UK leaders in Youth Futures Foundation’s Evidence Into Action portfolio and contributes to national conversations on youth employment through multiple government and sector working groups.   In 2025, he was awarded Northern Impact of the Year at the Manchester Young Talent Awards, recognising his leadership and the impact of RISE UP’s work across the region. 

A regular voice in national media: with appearances on BBC One, BBC News, LBC Radio and UCB. Roman champions a proximity-led, values-driven and unapologetically people-first approach to leadership. 

He is also a graduate of the American Express Leadership Academy 2025, supporting his commitment to scaling RISE UP’s work and driving bold solutions to youth unemployment.

Friday night proved something I’ve spent years trying to believe…I really do belong in these rooms.

On Friday, I won the Northern Impact Award at the JCI Manchester Young Talent Awards!💥

Truthfully, I still struggle with imposter syndrome.
Even now, walking into certain rooms, I sometimes catch myself thinking I’m still that kid from a broken home who was told I’d “never amount to anything.”😔

But that’s exactly why I do this work.
Because the same system that once made me feel like I didn’t belong is still making too many young people feel the same. 💔

When I took over RISE UP, the charity was on the brink of collapse.
I was 27, a first-time CEO but determined to show that lived experience and bold ideas could rebuild a system that’s been failing young people for far too long.

Fast forward to now, RISE UP’s grown by over 130% in less than two years, placing us firmly in the top 5% of small charities in the UK for growth. 🚀

More importantly, this year alone we’ve supported over 100 young people into employment and built a team that leads with purpose and belief. 🔥

This award isn’t about me.
It’s about every person who’s been overlooked but still shows up with hunger and drive.
It’s about the team that turns vision into real change every single day.
And it’s about proving that purpose and disruption belong in the same sentence.

Massive respect to everyone shortlisted in my category - the work being done across the North is nothing short of inspiring. 💪

I was recently told it looks like I’m having too much fun.


Honestly? That comment sat with me. 🤯

Because yes, you might see the awards nights, the media interviews, the energy, the momentum.🔥 

But what you don’t see are the parts of leadership that never make the highlight reel:

- the 70+ hour weeks
- the constant travel 😴
- the pressure that sits heavy some days
- the responsibility you feel in your chest
- the tiny windows where you might actually switch off… if you’re lucky

And in a sector where one-third of charities don’t think they’ll survive, keeping your head up takes more strength than people realise.

I’m not sharing this for sympathy.
I’m sharing it because being a leader is hard and sometimes lonely.

And too many young professionals are burning out behind the scenes.

And for the record:
I will not code-switch or water things down.
Not when the stakes are this high for the young people we serve.
Not when mental health struggles are rising across the workforce.
Not when people need leaders to be honest, not polished.

If you’ve ever looked at someone’s highlight reel and thought they “have it easy”, just remember:

- You never see the full story on here.
- Most leaders are carrying more than they show.
- And fun doesn’t cancel out the graft.

I’ll keep showing up with honesty, grit, and a bit of humour - because that’s who I am. 🤷‍♂️
And maybe showing the real version gives someone else permission to do the same.

But I will say this…
I am immensely proud of what we’re building.

This year alone:

- I’ve spoken on BBC One & LBC Radio calling out broken systems
- Featured in The Guardian where they described our conversation as “filled with a sense of raw humanity”
- RISE UP has supported 120+ young people into work, many were written off elsewhere
- We’ve grown one of the boldest youth employment movements in the UK
- We’ve picked up awards and partnered with employers who are finally ready to do things differently

So if it looks like I’m having fun?
Sometimes I am.

Because there’s joy in doing work that matters - even when it’s exhausting.💯
But behind every smile, every interview, every post… there’s a lot of graft, heart and pressure that most people never see.

If you’re a leader feeling stretched:
You’re not the only one. I see you. 💙

That’s the line The Guardian used yesterday when describing our conversation and honestly, it hit me hard.

Maybe because yesterday would’ve been my mum’s birthday.
Maybe because the piece landed on a day that’s always tough since losing her.
Maybe because it reminded me how far things have come and how much of what I do is still about making her proud. 🥺

I spent the first eight months after my 16th birthday unemployed. 
Lost. Grieving. No direction. No safety net.
Just trying to make sense of a world that didn’t feel built for someone like me. 🤯

And now I’m reading my own story and the stories of the young people we support in The Guardian. 
On a day like yesterday, it felt… full circle. 🤷‍♂️

The piece captures what we see every single day at RISE UP:

- Young people carrying anxiety so heavy it slows their whole life down.
- Confidence that never got the chance to grow after Covid ripped through their formative years.
- A job market full of trapdoors, dead ends and automated hiring that shuts out the very people who need opportunity most.
- And a system that makes them apply for 150-200 jobs with no response… then asks why they’re struggling.

This year alone, we’ve helped 120 young people into work.

Every single one of them has a story behind the statistics and for many, the biggest barrier wasn’t ability.
It was confidence, grief, mental health, or simply the sheer exhaustion of constant rejection.

I don’t share any of this for sympathy.
I share it because these are the realities policymakers can’t see from Whitehall.
The realities employers miss when recruitment becomes automated.
And the realities too many people still dismiss with “young people just don’t want to work.”

They do.
They’re trying.
They’re fighting battles most will never understand.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from my own journey, and from the hundreds of young people who trust us, it’s this:

When you meet people at face value, without judgement, everything changes.

I’m proud of the work we’re doing.
I’m proud of the young people we support.
And mum I hope wherever you are, you would be proud too. 💙

Got to sit down for a fireside chat with Sharon Weetman this morning at the GM Youth Voice Census launch event! 🚀

Being a CEO is great…
But before any title, I’m someone who’s lived the reality so many young people in this census are describing.

We weren’t just talking data, percentages or charts - we were talking about real lives.

Young people feeling shut out.
Struggling with confidence.
Trying to navigate systems that don’t see their full story.

Huge shoutout to Lauren Mistry from Youth Employment UK for breaking down the national picture and showing clearly where Greater Manchester is leading… and where we’ve got work to do.

And massive thanks to Sharon for inviting me to help bring the human lens to the numbers.

Because if GM’s ambition is to be the leading engine of social mobility (and it should be), then this is exactly where it starts: listening properly to young people and acting on what we hear. 💯

The picture can look bleak but small marginal changes, repeated consistently, can shift an entire system.

Oh, and yes… they say it always rains in Manchester, but of course the one day I’m photographed outside, the sun decides to attack me directly in the eyes. 😂

Let’s turn today into real action. 🤩

This week, at the Greater Manchester Youth Census launch, I said something that landed harder than I expected:

“Every young person thinks it’s just them
that they’re not good enough,
that nobody will hire them,
that something is wrong with them.”

But it’s not them.
It’s the system. 

Huge shoutout to Sharon Weetman  at Greater Manchester Combined Authority for inviting me to join the fireside chat and to Youth Employment UK and Lauren Mistry for driving such an important national piece of work. 🔥

The data tells a story.
But the lived experience behind it?
That’s what we have to act on.

Here’s the truth I shared in the room:

Employers say roles are “entry level”… then ask for 2-3 years’ experience. 🤯
Young people are sending 100+ applications with zero responses. 🤯
Automated hiring is rejecting people before they’re even seen. 🤯
And every rejection chips away at their confidence until they think the problem is them.💔

It isn’t.

What they need isn’t another lecture about “getting a job.”
They need structured pathways, real support, and employers willing to do things differently.

And if you’re #OpenToWork right now - 
just know this: I’ve got you.
RISE UP has you.
You’re not alone in this. 💙

(and trust me, I’m VERY ready for a bit of winter sun tomorrow ✈️).

But let’s get straight into it:

Today’s Budget did touch on some of the things we’ve been shouting about for a long time - 
early intervention, joined-up systems, employer responsibility, and practical support for those furthest from opportunity.

Good. Necessary. 👌
But let’s be honest: it’s nowhere near enough.

Because while those in Westminster debate numbers and soundbites, young people in our communities are still:

- Sending 150+ job applications with zero responses
- Getting shut out by automated recruitment systems
- Carrying the long shadow of Covid into a labour market not built for them
- Being judged before they’re understood
- Losing confidence before they’ve even had a chance to start

That’s the reality we deal with every single day. 💔

RISE UP will keep doing what we always do:
Meeting young people exactly where they are.
Removing the real barriers no policy document can see.
Creating paid pathways.
Building confidence.
And fighting like hell for the ones being overlooked.

So here’s my ask off the back of today’s Budget:

Employers: partner with us - help create real paid opportunities.

Government: talk to those with lived experience before designing policy.

Anyone who cares about youth opportunity: please support our mission.

If you want fewer people stuck on benefits: help build the conditions for people to actually thrive.

Budgets set direction.
But the real work?
It happens on the ground.
And that’s where you’ll find us, every single day! 💙
