Don't Debate, Litigate

In September 2019, to write its MIT report, MIT's lawyers searched 610K MIT emails — not for information they needed to report but for evidence they needed to hide. MIT lawyer Scott Barshay said that "problematic emails that may come out" are always his first priority. And he took care to be prepared whether they did or didn't.

But this process can also be reversed, and "problematic emails" can be found, brought out through the Discovery process in litigation, so that the MIT community can learn the facts of what has been happening at MIT over the past 20 years. It ain't gonna be pretty but sure is necessary.

Influence of Fossil Fuel Funding at MIT (2004-2024)

Following a 27-year career at MIT as a Communications Manager working primarily in the areas of energy, sustainability, and climate change, I spent 6 years investigating the covert influence of fossil fuels at MIT from 2004 to 2024. Findings are available in the attached PDF.

Building Manager for Ralph M. Parsons Laboratory for Environmental Science and Engineering, 4-story research center with 10 research laboratories, 18 faculty, and ~25 students, postdocs and research staff. 

-- Overhauled machine shop as Sustainability Maker Space, geared to repurposing discarded furniture, pallets, and other materials. 
-- Overhauled and renovated classrooms, conference rooms, labs, and storage spaces, at minimal cost to lab. 
-- Built strong relationships with MIT Recycling, Grounds, Facilities, and Housekeeping to upgrade services and equipment and improve day-to-day maintainability.

Design, develop, maintain website for National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center, EBICS.net. Functionality includes: Intranet, program administration and document/image repository; 100+ member profiles, outreach and education (including videos and online courses), news, calendar, and events; Constant Contact integration; website training for program participants; conference websites (including registration).

Web Developer, MIT Center for Emergent Behaviors of Integrated Cellular Systems (EBICS)

Develop and maintain websites for Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Center for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems (including e-commence and conference registration functionality); coordinated publication of CANES Reports series (online and in print); created departmental brochures, reports, and special projects; provide department- wide technical support.

In 2009 I created and maintained sustainability.mit.edu to support MIT student groups working in the area of Sustainability and the Environment, in the same way I had done since 2007 for the MIT Energy Club and other student groups working in the area of Energy.

Develop and maintain multi-media website for international air pollution program led by Nobel Laureate Mario Molina. Researched and designed multimedia “Education and Outreach” website, using cartoon narratives, streaming media, and scientific lessons to engage general public in effort to reduce air pollution; collaborated with Mexican and U.S. colleagues to create scientific content.

Coordinated production of textbook and quarterly newsletter (copy editing, graphics, printing, budget, conference organizing, communications with colleagues); managed office.
Project management: Coordinated production of textbook on atmospheric chemistry (edited by G. Brasseur, R. Prinn, and A. Pszenny): Facilitated communications with international authors; created all graphics and illustrations; developed database to automate copyright requests (subsequently adopted by four other core project offices); established formatting guidelines for eight-volume series verified and updated 1700 bibliographic references.

Conference organizing: 1) Organized 200-person conference in Aspen, CO (online registration, creation and distribution of 400-page draft document via pdf download, menu, budget, schedule, financial support, reimbursements; 2) Organized three-day meeting in Bern, Switzerland to develop collaborative network of webmasters; 3) Represented project office at conferences in Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland.

Communications Manager, International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) Program, MIT

Following a 27-year career at MIT as a Communications Manager for some of MIT's most noted faculty and student groups, most working in the area of energy and sustainability, I've spent the past seven years investigating fossil fuel corruption at MIT from 2004 to 2024. No arrests yet, not even any prosecutions. Just a mess of depressing facts. But instead of winding down with fossil fuels, MIT is now ramping up with weapons development, and those new clients now target MIT students who question their right to the MIT campus and brand.

Edmund Carlevale

No one at MIT has sounded the alarm more passionately, more courageously than Professor Emeritus Ted Postol — about John Deutch, about failed weapon systems. And yet, who is there to hear these warnings and turn them into action, consequences?

Similarly, no one has done more to bring accountability to Jeffrey Epstein than MIT alum Thomas Massie (MIT '96) and Ro Khanna. And yet, where are the arrests, the consequences?

I worked at MIT for 27 years (1991-2018) and Postol and Massie epitomize the MIT engineer. It is a standard of excellence the world may never see again.

But they have an Achilles heel. And in 2010, the scientists and engineers at MIT lost control of MIT, and their Achilles heel is that they don't seem to realize it. It would take me about 15 minutes to convince Ted Postol that what I've learned over the past 7 years is true. But where would that leave us? We'd be back to futilely sounding analarm.

So this is my strategy. I want to do everything I can to explain to Professor Postol what I've learned, so that he can decide if what I've learned if plausible, if it is in fact likely.

And if he decides that it is, then I'm asking him to communicate to Representative Massie that there is enough justification for subpoenas, for hearings to expose the devastating role that MIT has played in the past twenty years in the horrific events now engulfing our work.

Sounding an alarm is never, ever enough. We have lost control to criminals, and genocide, assassinations, horrors beyond our ability to imagine are the weapons and strategies being used against us.

The attached pdf is a mess, truly, but there can be no easy introduction for the unimaginable. But the important thing is to begin.
