Your first hire should probably be a VA.

I was discussing this with Matt Essam on his podcast, and it’s amazing how many founders delay it.

Usually it’s control, a bad first experience, or the belief it’s more hassle than it’s worth.

But the real issue isn’t hiring a VA. It’s expecting one person to run your entire back end.

A VA isn’t “admin support”. It’s outcome-based support.

Start with one thing you never want to do again. Video editing. Invoicing. Diary management. Nail that with the right person. Then move to the next.

Think portfolio, not one superhero hire.

Handing over my inbox alone was one of the highest leverage decisions I’ve made. I only see what truly needs me. The rest is handled.

Scaling isn’t about doing more. It’s about removing yourself as the bottleneck.

If there were a referendum on Europe tomorrow, I would vote to rejoin.

How would you vote?

I do not say that lightly. If anything, I feel more passionately about it now than ever.

Not because I think the EU is perfect, but because the global backdrop has shifted in ways that concern me.

Watching Trump tariffs used as leverage to push through his idealism feels so far removed from trade policy and more like economic pressure dressed up as strategy. 

When those tactics create friction/competition between the UK and our European neighbours, it risks widening gaps that weaken all of us, at a time when Putin is knocking on our door.

Hearing senior US figures suggest that a Russian invasion of a NATO country might not automatically trigger a unified military response is disappointing and unsettling. 

Particularly when we remember how quickly the UK, Europe and many allies stood alongside the United States after 9/11. Collective security only works if it is genuinely collective and communicated with clarity.

China and Russia are looking for weakness, and they are finding it easily in our words.

Then seeing talk of Greenland becoming part of the USA, by force if necessary, and Canada the 51st state - it's a joke. 

The post-war world order was built on alliances, stability and shared rules. It now feels as though we all just go cap in hand to Trump:

"... have an invite to see the King, or a private jet or two - yes, please let me buy a billion pounds of Trump Crypto Coin."

I have a lot of respect for Mark Carney and his framing of “middle powers” and the role they can play. 

Countries like Canada, European nations, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and even the Gulf states collectively represent enormous economic weight and diplomatic influence. 

If the pressure between the US and China continues to intensify, and if reliance on a single dominant security guarantor in the US becomes less certain, then closer alignment among these nations feels pragmatic rather than ideological.

As an island (UK) that has fallen from its height on the world stage, perhaps it is time to recognise that, for the good of our economy, our security and global stability, a deliberate step back into Europe would be wise. 

Not out of nostalgia. Not out of weakness. But out of strategic realism.

Deeper trade integration and tighter security arrangements with Europe, alongside stronger ties with other middle powers, would bring a far larger collective voice into the conversation. 

A bloc capable of promoting global stability rather than division.

Maybe that sounds idealistic. 

But I cannot see why striving for peace, supporting global development goals, protecting the environment and valuing fellow human beings should have slipped down the priority list.

Maybe I'm just woke!

If the vote were tomorrow, I would choose to rejoin.
