We ran a public social growth challenge in September. 
30 Days + 90 participants =14,000+ total followers. 
But... was it really worth it?

Spoiler: it was. 
(Watch to find out why)

But it wasn't "worth it" for the reasons I thought it would be. 
The goal was simple: post every day and grow my LinkedIn following, and, subsequently, my newsletter.

After 30 days I gained...

*** 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠𝙨 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩 ***

~100 followers. 
And 9 newsletter subscribers.

That's not great. 
But here's what I learned -- and stick with me because (I think) it's important. 

I went into this challenge believing if I post on LinkedIn daily for 30 days, I’d succeed. All the metrics would go up.

But what matters more is intention and strategy. I went into the challenge without a content plan. And fell off the wagon.  

Here’s the big takeaway I’ve learned from this challenge:

𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 
It’s wasted energy.
It’s wasted attention.

What do I mean by that?

→ Social media posts should be an amplification—a repurposing—of our cornerstone content. They shouldn’t be 𝘵𝘩𝘦 content. 

Cornerstone content is our
→ YouTube video
→ newsletter
→ podcast episode
→ Substack article

That's where 80% of our energy, attention, and effort should be. 
That’s where IV Content™ lives. 
That’s where you build authority & credibility. 
That’s where you create not just followers but fans.

Yes: use social media to push that messaging freely to the masses. 
But social media should NOT be the starting point of content creation.
And that was the mistake I was making.

Bari Weiss recently sold her 'The Free Press' Substack newsletter & media business to Paramount Skydance (parent company of CBS News).

She also became the CBS News' Editor-in-Chief.

All for $150m. 

So what's the takeaway for newsletter operators?

❌ "My newsletter could be in for a sweet $150m payday"

✅ Your hard work of building & publishing a newsletter could pay off

Chenell says it best: "You never know who could be reading your newsletter."

My thoughts are similar. 

→ You could work backwards to build the newsletter that X company might want to acquire.
→ You could use your newsletter as a portfolio for an acqui-hire (like Bari) or to showcase your skills + knowledge for a role at X company. 

Lots of people are publishing newsletters hoping to build a 6-7 figure business. 

But what if your newsletter was the key piece that gets your foot in the door of a multi-million—or billion-dollar company.
