Being a dad is hands-down the hardest job I’ve ever had. 

There’s no manual,
there’s plenty of pressure,

Your P&L says you're profitable, but your bank account says otherwise

Most SMB owners don't realize this until it's too late.

Profit ≠ Cash. You can show great numbers on paper while scrambling to make payroll. 

That $50k sale from last month? Still waiting. But rent? Due today.

Here's what actually works:

→ Invoice immediately, not "when you get around to it"
→ Offer early payment discounts, 2% off for payment in 10 days, beats chasing invoices for 60 days
→ Know your cash conversion cycle better than your coffee order
→ Track days sales outstanding religiously

If customers pay you in 45 days but you pay suppliers in 15, you're literally funding their business with your money. That's not partnership, that's poor cash management.

Cash flow forecasting isn't a nice-to-have. It's the difference between scaling and explaining to your team why paychecks are delayed.

After closing 10+ SMB acquisitions, one truth stands out.

The numbers you see on their books are never the real numbers.

Most small business owners mix personal and business expenses without even realizing it.

That company car is also the family SUV.

Those office supplies include their kid's school projects.

Their P&L might look profitable, but when you normalize the numbers, everything changes.

Before you make an offer, slow down.

→ Ask for at least 3 years of tax returns, not just financial statements.
→ Visit the business multiple times, at different hours and on different days.
→ Talk to their top 3 customers. If they won’t let you, walk away.

The real value of a business isn’t in the equipment, inventory, or building.

It’s in the customer relationships and the systems that keep things running.

If the owner leaves and revenue drops 40%, you didn’t buy a business.

You bought an expensive hobby.

My rule is simple: never pay more than 3x adjusted EBITDA for an SMB.

And always assume your first year will be 20% worse than projected.

That mindset will save you more than any negotiation trick.

If your reason for buying is “we’ll cut costs and make it more efficient,” 
you’re probably wrong.

Every buyer thinks they’re smarter than the seller.

But most of those inefficiencies exist for a reason you’ll only discover after 
the deal closes.

Buying a business can be the best decision of your life but only if you do the hard work before you sign.

Numbers tell one story.

People tell the truth.

If your "Fractional CFO" spends more time on tax forms than your cash runway, you didn’t hire a CFO. You bought accounting with a premium price tag.

A CPA tells you what happened.
A CFO tells you what to do next.

That’s the difference between reporting and survival planning.

FP&A is the real CFO toolkit. It’s how you:

→ Build models that stress-test your assumptions
→ Create budgets that prevent disasters
→ Turn numbers into decisions

I’ve seen too many “Fractional CFOs” who can’t answer basic questions like:

“What’s our customer acquisition payback period?”

or

“If we lose our second-biggest client, when do we hit zero cash?”

That’s not finance strategy. That’s expensive bookkeeping.

Before you hire one, ask this:

“Can you build me a 13-week cash flow forecast and show three scenarios?”

If they can’t, you’re not hiring a CFO, you’re buying compliance.

A great CFO doesn’t look backward.

They navigate forward.
