Being a dad is hands-down the hardest job I’ve ever had. 

There’s no manual,
there’s plenty of pressure,
and let’s be honest,
it’s not a job with a big paycheck.

But it’s worth every bit of stress.

In my coaching practice, I talk to a lot of people who are tired, worn out, and ground down by their business.

In my brokerage practice, I talk to people waiting for a miracle buyer to swoop in and overpay for an underperforming business.

Both groups think they only way out is through a sale.

But when you dig in, you find they started their business because it was something they were passionate about.

They wanted to work for themselves, they wanted to control their own destiny.

But the reality of small business ownership is that it’s HARD.

There are all kinds of challenges, and over time, some people really do grow to resent, even hate their business.

Do you think a buyer wants to buy into that nightmare?

No chance.

So working to build (or rebuild) your business to support the kind of life you want to live is a good starting point.

As a coach on the field, I focused on helping players get better.
- I learned leadership and psychology, to help get results. 

As an Administrator I learned business operations firsthand.
- Running a club with a 7-figure budget, getting 3000+ kids per year on the field.

Then in 2016, my path changed.

Instead of sports, I focused on small businesses.

I learned business coaching in the EMyth system.
- I helped business owners daily, to build systems, and a business that worked.

I worked with Owners from startups to $30M+ in revenue.

Turnarounds, rebuilds, and "don't rock the boat" - I've seen it all.

And I learned more about small business in a few years than most people do in a lifetime.

If I had to rebuild a nonprofit board from scratch today,
I would not start with funding.

I would start with firepower.

Because most boards do not fail from lack of donations.
They fail from lack of decisive builders.

Here is how I would design a board that acts less like a committee and more like a startup team:

1. Recruit for wisdom, not wallets

Stop saying:

“We need people who can fundraise.”

Start saying:

“We are assembling a strategy team to scale our mission.”

That single shift changes who you attract.
You begin to bring in operators instead of spectators.

People who do not just believe in your cause but know how to build it.


2. Treat them like cofounders, not cheerleaders

The old “give, get, or get off” approach belongs in the past.

Try this instead:
• Form 90-day action pods
• Match every seat to a real function such as partnerships, finance, communications, or policy
• Give them a challenge to solve, not a presentation to watch

People join boards to create progress.
Not to applaud it.

3. Build range, not just representation

Diversity is not only about who sits at the table.
It is also about what each person can contribute.

Your ideal board includes:
• A financial leader who has guided an organization through a storm
• A founder who knows how to scale under pressure
• A communicator who can make your mission headline worthy
• A policy expert who can make systems move

That is how you make your board crisis proof.

4. Turn meetings into war rooms

No more status updates. No more “good meeting.”

Send a pre-read, then ask one powerful question:

“What is blocking our growth this quarter?”

End every meeting with clear decisions, not open discussion.


5. They do not need to raise money. They need to open doors

If your entire plan is to have them ask friends for small checks, you do not have a plan.

Instead:
• Train them to create corporate partnerships
• Encourage them to host private briefings
• Use their credibility in rooms you cannot reach
• Support them in becoming active voices on LinkedIn

Smart boards expand your reach as much as your revenue.

6. Culture beats bylaws

High performing boards run on:
• Candor instead of comfort
• Curiosity instead of control
• Momentum instead of endless meetings

Transformation never comes from politeness.
It comes from purpose.

A board should not look like a donor list.
It should look like a founding team.

Not a circle of funders.
A circle of builders.

How I raised $1,000,000 and why the same strategy works for nonprofits

When I raised $1M for my startup, it wasn’t because I had the best product.
It was because I learned how to pitch ideas that people couldn’t ignore.

Investors and donors aren’t that different.
Both fund belief, momentum, and clarity.

Both want to know their money creates a return, financial or social.

These are the lessons that translate directly to the nonprofit world:

1. You’re not selling charity. You’re selling certainty.

Investors fund what feels inevitable.
Donors do too.

When your pitch sounds like a bet, it feels risky.
When it sounds like momentum, it feels safe to join.

People back progress, not potential.

2. You need an insight, not just a mission.

Every strong startup pitch begins with a clear gap in the market.

Every strong nonprofit pitch begins with a clear gap in society.

“Millions face hunger” is a mission.

“Food waste from local restaurants could feed every family in our city if someone connects the dots” is an insight.

Insight gets attention.
Mission gets applause.

3. Show traction and leverage.

My $1M raise happened after I proved traction and leverage.

Traction means what’s already working.
Leverage means how each dollar multiplies impact.

“Every $1 donated creates $6 in community value.”
That’s how you speak the language of growth.

Corporate America Is Quietly Facing a Crisis. So why should nonprofits care about this?


Gallup released a sobering report: 

Only 31% of U.S. employees are engaged at work, the lowest level in a decade. 

That’s the same number as in 2014. Meanwhile, 17% are actively disengaged.

In other words, 7 out of 10 employees are physically present but emotionally detached.

The same companies struggling with disengagement are the ones you’re trying to partner with. 

And right now, they are desperate for meaning.

Here’s what the data reveals:
• Only 46% of employees know what is expected of them at work.
• Only 39% feel someone at work cares about them as a person.
• Only 30% feel someone encourages their development.

Here are 3 ways to handle rejection so it fuels growth instead of burnout:

I’ve been rejected more times than I can count.

As a nonprofit founder, rejection comes in many flavors:

A grant proposal turned down.
A corporate partner that backs out.
A donor who says “not this year.”

It stings.
But it doesn’t have to stop you.

1. Reframe it as redirection

Most “no’s” aren’t about you. They’re about timing, priorities, or budgets.

When you hear “no,” ask: Where else can I redirect this energy?

The best partnerships often come from places you didn’t expect.

2. Treat feedback as free consulting

When possible, ask funders why.

Even one sentence of feedback is pure gold.

That “declined” email just became a free advisory memo you can use to sharpen the next ask.

3. Build resilience with a pipeline mentality

The toughest rejection is when it’s your only shot.

That’s why you need multiple streams, corporate partnerships, individual donors, grants, earned revenue.

When you have a pipeline, one “no” doesn’t derail the mission.

Rejection isn’t the end of the story. It’s part of it.
