Last week during a presentation, I did something that most presenters would find terrifying.

I turned my slides off.

Not by accident. On purpose.

I pressed the blank screen button on my presentation remote and the entire screen went black.

A couple of weeks back, I had the privilege of conducting a storytelling & communication workshop for the first-year students at NIFT Delhi.

Thank you, Shreelekha Anurag, for the trust and the opportunity to work with such an energetic, curious, and courageous group of young designers.

What I noticed in that room was powerful:
The talent was already there.
The creativity was visible.
But what truly shifted during the session was clarity.

We worked on helping students move from:
 ❌ “I am creative and hardworking” to 
 ✅ “Here’s the moment that made me choose design…”

We built 60-second structured introductions.
We transformed generic answers into personal journeys.

We focused on one simple truth:
Skills make you capable.
Stories make you memorable.

Because whether it’s:

Most people focus on having the right answers.

The real leverage in life and leadership often comes from asking the right questions.

Last week I had the opportunity to reconnect with Rupa Datta, Past District Director of Toastmasters District 91 (UK), during her visit to India. The last time we met was about 18 months ago in Wembley.

Our conversation moved across many themes — life, purpose, future plans, regrets (or perhaps the absence of them), politics, and the role of media in shaping public perception.

But one thing stood out again.
Rupa has a remarkable ability to ask deep, thoughtful questions.

And that reminded me of something I’ve observed repeatedly while working with professionals and leaders on communication and storytelling:

Great communicators don’t just tell powerful stories.
They ask powerful questions.

Because the quality of our thinking, conversations, and decisions is often determined by the quality of the questions we ask.

When the questions improve,
the conversations deepen,
the clarity increases,
and the stories become more meaningful.

A simple reminder for all of us:

If you want better answers in life and leadership, start by asking better questions.

I once said no to a well-paid corporate speaking gig.
And it had nothing to do with the money.

In fact, it was a perfect fit on paper.

The topic was Storytelling in Sales something I love teaching.

I was excited until I read the training brief.
They wanted the program to promote a “Hunter’s Mindset” in sales.

And that’s something I don’t believe in.

Here’s the surprising insight:
𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑡𝑜 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑠 𝑎 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑑𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑛.

The hunter mindset focuses on closing the deal at any cost.
But I believe in the Farmer Mindset.

Hunters chase transactions.
Farmers build relationships.

Hunters focus on this quarter’s target.
Farmers focus on long-term trust.

Hunters celebrate the sale.
Farmers celebrate the customer’s success.

My tactical rule:
𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝.

Over time, people trust coaches who stand for something.

A coach once did a simple experiment with 50 people and 50 balloons.
Each person was asked to:
1️⃣ Take a balloon
2️⃣ Blow it up
3️⃣ Write their name on it

All the balloons were then collected and placed in another room.

Then the coach said:
“Go inside and find the balloon with your name on it.”

The door opened.
Chaos.
People were pushing, searching, and grabbing balloons trying to find theirs.
Even after 10 minutes, many still couldn’t find their own balloon.

So the coach stopped the exercise.

This time, he gave a different instruction.
“Go inside, pick any balloon you see, read the name on it, and give it to that person.”

The door opened again.
Within two minutes, everyone had their balloon.

Then the coach said something powerful:
“This is exactly how happiness works.”

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐬, 𝐖𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧.

𝟏. 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲.
Before diving into what happened, create context and curiosity.

One simple line can change attention levels:
“Last year, something happened that completely changed the way I look at leadership.”
Now your audience is leaning in.

𝟐. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞.
Don’t just describe emotions. Reveal thoughts.

Instead of saying, “I was nervous before the pitch,”
Say, “I kept asking myself… what if I blank out? What if they reject this?”

When you verbalize internal conflict, your story becomes human. And human stories build trust.

𝟑. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞.
Most people stay in summary mode: “She encouraged me.” “My boss supported me.”

Bring it alive:
 “Haritosh, are you sure you want to take this risk?”
 “Yes. I’d rather try and fail than regret it later.”

Dialogue creates immersion.
Immersion creates connection.
Connection builds influence.

In today’s attention economy, storytelling is not a soft skill.
It’s a strategic advantage.

1️⃣ Pause and breathe
First, relax. Take a deep breath.

Remember:
The audience usually doesn’t even realize something went wrong.

Your calmness decides whether the moment feels awkward or normal.

2️⃣ Involve the audience
Instead of panicking, ask for help.

You can say:
“Let me check with you all — what was the last point we discussed?”

This does two things:
• It refreshes your memory
• It pulls the audience into the conversation

3️⃣ Acknowledge and move forward
Once you remember, simply say: 
“Thank you for that. Let’s move to the next point.”

No drama. No apology spiral. Just continue.

Here’s the secret most speakers don’t know:
Confidence isn’t about never making mistakes. It’s about handling the moment smoothly when things go wrong.

Most people don’t lack confidence.

I’ve seen this with speakers, professionals, and even coaches.
They worry:

“What will people think?”

“What if I mess up?”

“What if I’m judged?”

But something interesting happens…

The moment their message becomes bigger than their ego,
their fear starts dissolving.

Because when you speak to impress, you feel pressure.
When you speak to serve, you feel purpose.

And purpose is always louder than judgement.

Fear of judgement fades when the purpose becomes stronger.

I almost cancelled that evening.

It wasn’t even something important. Just one of those “haan haan I’ll come” plans that you low-key hope get cancelled on their own.

I was tired. Didn’t feel like talking. Didn’t feel like explaining myself to anyone.

I even typed the message.

“Hey, something’s come up…”

And then just stared at it.

For some reason, I didn’t send it.

I went.

The event itself was very normal. Average. Loud. Slightly awkward.

But I had one random conversation in a corner with someone I barely knew.

They said something so casually about how they handle self-doubt and it hit me harder than it should have.

I came back home thinking about that one line.

An HR head from an IT company reached out to me with a simple problem.
