Human Resources Consulting Services Intern (DoD Skillbridge Program)

After serving 8 years in the United States Navy, I decided it was time for the next chapter of my life. I had prepared myself for that moment by taking advantage of educational opportunities afforded to me by the military and obtaining my MBA as well as a certificate in Human Resources. I knew it would be scary moving on after serving the world's greatest Navy, but I knew it would be a challenge worth my while.

I was fortunate enough to be able to utilize the Department of Defense's Skillbridge program and obtained an internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I shadowed in all areas of human resources and the opportunity solidified the career path for me.

After filling out many applications and going through a handful of interviews, I accepted my first civilian position as an HR Manager at Cherokee Millwright, Inc. In this role I do anything and everything HR. Three months into my position, I was notified that we would be going through an acquisition, which gave me the learning opportunity of a lifetime. I love working in human resources and while there are the "not fun" parts of my job, I am typically given the opportunity to help others through their own careers, which gives me a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

Through my internship and my time at Cherokee Millwright, I developed a love and passion for helping others find their passion. I knew a career in recruiting was calling my name. I kept a watchful eye for positions that seemed like a perfect fit from a cultural, growth, and team fit, which led me to Pilot Flying J. I was lucky enough to recruit for a variety of teams and work with some pretty awesome hiring managers. I eventually focused on technical recruiting, which was a new and exciting challenge. After about a year of recruiting data engineers and data scientists, new doors started to open for me and I felt the next step should be to work for a tech-focused company where I can grow, learn, and understand more about the space. I was fortunate to get a Senior Technical Recruiter role at Shopify and it has exceeded expectations. I have learned SO, SO much, worked with the MOST amazing and smart people, and figured out how important an organization's mission can be to my own satisfaction and happiness.

I know I still have a lot to learn in this journey of career (and life for that matter) but the thought of it brings me joy, excitement, and a sense of endless possibilities. I truly believe I am meant to do big things in this world.
