Two stocks with the same P/E can have opposite investor paybacks. 

Yields reveal the difference.

Think of yield as your $100 bill’s annual “payback” from a business. 

How much cash does the company earn and return?

1. Earnings Yield (E/P)
   
• Formula: Earnings ÷ Market Cap = 1 ÷ P/E
• Use: Quick value check. Compare to bond yields.
• Rule of thumb: Above ~6% starts to look interesting.
  
2. Free Cash Flow (FCF) Yield
   
• Formula: Free Cash Flow ÷ Market Cap
• Use: “Real cash” profitability after the bills and upkeep.
• Rule of thumb: 5–8% is a healthy zone.
  
3. Dividend Yield
   
• Formula: Dividends ÷ Market Cap (or DPS ÷ Price)
• Use: Income today.
• Rule of thumb: 2–4% is common; always test coverage with FCF.
  
4. Buyback Yield
   
• Formula: Net Share Repurchases ÷ Market Cap
• Use: Ownership per share rises when shares shrink.
• Rule of thumb: 2–4% is good, >5% is excellent—if funded by FCF.
  
Add them up for the big picture: Shareholder Yield = Dividend + Buyback. 

That’s the cash actually returned to you.

Quick checks

• Rising FCF yield with flat earnings? Cash quality is improving.
• Big dividend but weak FCF? Possible yield trap.
• Buybacks only look good when share count falls (net of new shares).
• Yields move with price. A falling price can lift yields—ask why first.
  
Yields translate accounting into investor payback. Track all four, not just one, and decisions get clearer.

What is a bond yield? 

How do bond yields work? It's easier than you think.

A bond yield measures the return an investor can expect from a bond. 

It represents the income generated by the bond as a percentage of its current market price. 

You can think of it as a dividend you receive for letting them borrow your money.

Coupon Yield or Nominal Yield: 

- This fixed interest payment is expressed as a percentage of the bond's face value. 
- Formula: (Annual Coupon Payment / Face Value of the Bond) * 100

Current Yield: 

- This yield is based on the bond's current market price rather than its face value. 
- Formula: (Annual Coupon Payment / Current Market Price of the Bond) * 100

Yield to Maturity (YTM): YTM represents the total return an investor can expect if the bond is held until maturity. 

It takes into account both the annual interest payments + any capital gain or loss from the bonds' face value. 

We can think of it as the bond's discount rate.

Interest rates have a huge impact on bonds. 

Think of it like a teeter-totter from grade school. As rates increase, the bond prices fall, and vice versa. 

Once you understand the impact of interest rates, bonds make more sense.

How to analyze the income statement for beginning investors. 

Ever wondered if a company is actually making money? 

The income statement is where you find the answer. 

Think of it as a financial report card that shows a company's performance over a period, like a quarter or a year. 

It’s often called the Profit and Loss (P&L) statement, and it tells a story, starting from the money coming in, to the money left over.

Let's walk through it.

At the very top, you have 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 (or Sales). This is the total amount of money the company brought in from selling its products or services. It's the starting point.

Next, we subtract the 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗱 (𝗖𝗢𝗚𝗦). These are the direct costs of making the product. For a bakery, this would be flour and sugar. 

What's left is the 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁. This tells you how efficiently the company makes its products.

But there are other costs to running a business, right? We then subtract the 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀, like marketing, salaries, and rent. This leaves us with 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, which shows the profit from the company's core business operations.

Finally, after accounting for other things like interest on debt and taxes, we arrive at the most famous number: 𝗡𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲. 

This is the "bottom line." 

It’s the profit left for the company and its shareholders after every single expense has been paid.

For an investor, looking at these numbers over time is key. 

Is revenue growing? Are profit margins improving? 

By understanding the simple flow from the top line to the bottom line, you can get a much clearer picture of a company's financial health.

How do banks make money? 

It's a simple formula which will help you understand these businesses. 

Ever wonder how your bank, that giant building downtown, actually makes its money? 

It might seem like a complex financial mystery, but when you break it down, the main idea is surprisingly simple. 

It all starts with you.

First, banks collect money from all of us. 

When you deposit your paycheck into a checking or savings account, you're essentially giving the bank a small loan. 

As a little "thank you," they might pay you a tiny amount of interest—say, something like 0.5%. 

This is Step 1, gathering the fuel.

Next comes the real engine of their business: lending. 

The bank takes all that money it gathered from depositors and lends it out to other people. 

These are the mortgages, car loans, and credit cards that help people buy homes and make big purchases. 

But as you can see in Step 2 of our graphic, they charge a much higher interest rate for these loans, maybe around 7.0%.

Here’s the magic trick. 

The bank's profit comes from the gap between those two numbers. 

They make money on "the spread"—the difference between the interest they earn from borrowers and the interest they pay to savers. 

In our example, that’s a tidy 6.5% profit margin.

On top of that, they also bring in extra cash from all those fees we know so well, like overdraft charges and account maintenance fees.

So, for an investor, what’s the bottom line? 

When you invest in a bank, you're betting on its ability to keep that spread wide and healthy. 

It’s a simple, powerful, and very profitable business model.

You don’t need Wall Street to value a business. You need a forecast, a discount rate, and discipline.

Think of a DCF like pricing a rental house. You ask: how much rent will I collect each year, and what’s that worth in today’s dollars? A stock is the same, but the “rent” is free cash flow.

Here’s the simple flow, based on the classic 5-step approach:

1. Estimate future cash flows Project free cash flow for the next 5–10 years. Use business drivers you can defend: revenue, margins, reinvestment. Cash flow, not net income.
2. Pick a discount rate (r) This turns future dollars into today’s dollars. It captures risk, opportunity cost, and inflation. Higher risk, higher r, lower value.
3. Discount those cash flows Divide each year’s cash flow by (1 + r) raised to that year. Now you have their present values.
4. Add a terminal value Assume cash flows continue beyond your forecast at a steady growth rate (g). Keep g realistic, usually near long-run inflation and below GDP growth.
5. Sum it up Present value of years 1–N plus the present value of the terminal piece. That’s your estimate of business value.

Pros and cautions:

• Anchored in fundamentals, not market mood.
• Sensitive to assumptions. Tiny tweaks in r or g change a lot.
• Garbage in, garbage out. Be conservative and cross-check.
  
DCF is just “What cash can this business produce, and what is that worth today?” Simple, not easy—but learnable.
