What you're experiencing.

Companies being much pickier.

But they are still hiring.

This is a game of musical chairs. 

And you can level up, figure out the competition you're up against.

Don't rely on "what you've always done"

Learn how to evolve. 

AI is rampant? Get better at building rapport and relationships WITHOUT needing a referral. 

Always used to MPC but email slowed down? Figure out a new channel and approach.

Tried something and it didn't work? Try it for longer.

Or find someone that you resonate with more and try that approach.

Staying stagant and b*tching will get you exactly what you want.

Which is zero improvement.

Producers don't have time for a lengthy pity party. 

You get one night to sleep off a bad day.

The success story that almost never was....

Isaiah Gibbs booked a call then canceled! 

I asked him for his reasoning and he goes "I have LinkedIn on lock, I need BD help"

Hmm ok, well that's one of my main focuses. We should still chat.

Within 2 weeks of that conversation he had a new client.

More importantly, Isaiah was extremely coachable. And still is. 

He tried everything we discussed. And every week he was sharing a win.

Then sharing different stories he wanted feedback and support with.

There are many ways to capture ROI...and all those ways require the student to invest their energy and attitude.

2 reasons recruiters don't build pipelines on LinkedIn.


1) They aren't consistent with outreach and/or content. 

I've hammered this point over and over, won't do so again right now. 

2) They don't know how to talk to people.

"but Clark, I've recruited forever, I know how to talk to people"

Candidates get a free service.

There is no cold calling a candidate.

There is no true sales.

It's more like getting people to switch energy services and they just get a lower bill. 

Getting managers to buy into you and then pay a fee.

That takes a different level of skill.

You have to know the nuance.

And have to be OK getting left on read. 

And knowing if and when to follow up directly. Or indirectly.

It's quite the web to internalize. 

The only way to win is to dive in head first, and figure it out for yourself. 

If you need help getting more reps, well that's where we come in.

Niche or don't niche? Really what you want to know is, what do people who don't know me need to see? Here's the shift you need to make....

Own your lane...don't defend it. 

The Digital Recruiter clients come in, own a lane, and go for it, get the results they want.

The people we don't work with. They waffle on a lane, are worried about having prospects tune out.

I've seen this paralyze recruiters that have relied on referrals for years. They turn to cold outreach and get frazzled. 

Worry about people that aren't relevant. 

Those prospects are almost always the ones not worth chasing. 

Stop trying to convince about prospects that will never buy.

Understand your strengths. 

Get clear on the type of business you want more of. 

And unapologetically go after it.

"I focus on relationships and rapport." 

Amazing. Now how do you scale that? 

And that right therein lies the answer as to why this platform is so powerful.

Did I scoff in 2018 when I learned people were getting clients from Facebook? Yes, yes I did.

I stopped real quick when seeing how some people had sales on autopilot.

All from digital marketing?

Yes. That's the power of taking a skilled producer, and amplifying their reach.

Your next great "cold" client is looking for the solution you provide.

I was poking around a client's campaigns yesterday and gave him a heads up on an old lead. What he responded with is the reason he's so successful...


"Oh ya, I emailed him last week. Trying to lock him down"

The original lead? From April 2025. 

That relentless follow up is what is key.

But without staying on top of it, most leads fall through the cracks.

"We closed a $35k fee and have a $40k offer out thanks to your candidate messaging and sequence for LinkedIn." - nice voice memo to start the day with. the catch? 

"But the sales side is still TBD"

And that's fairly normal. When you're use to the cold email/call game, it can be an adjustment navigating LinkedIn and doing more rapport building.

Candidate outreach almost always clicks first. The service is free on their side, so fixing messaging to resonate more with their incentives changes their behavior quickly into what you were always looking for.

Client side? They need a bit more time to earn that trust. And that's where consistency comes into play.

Trying different wants to open up conversations. Finding ways to add value without just needing an open role.

Having "feel" is a critical part of becoming better at biz dev. When the immediate opportunity doesn't present itself, how do you approach it? 

Improving your systems and approach on the candidate side = more opportunity to get the time and reps on mastering biz dev.

What's you get all that in place, you become dynamic, and you always know how to "catch your own fish."

That's when $35k and $40k doesn't just happen on a good week, but it happens over and over again.

"I don't want to look like my feed." This is 100% the right way to think if you're a recruiter. Because most recruiters' posts aren't leading to business.

...Unless you're following a bunch of Digital Recruiter members. 

But if you're seeing a bunch of selfies, em dashes, rocketship emojis, complaining, etc...

You're right. Those people aren't building a pipeline of quality leads with that content. 

There is a formula that works.

One that when inputed with YOUR voice and stories, make it unique to you.

And that's what resonates with your market.

***Assuming you're connecting with them daily.

***And that you're profile is optimized to drive them to see you as a solution. 

See? There's a lot of pieces to put together.

And that's why people struggle with marketing.

Because it's not ONE thing.

It's all the things put together. And you have to know how to interpret the signals.

Who to follow up with. And when. And what to say.

That's how you build a pipeline. 
Warm up your sales calls. 
Close better clients.

“That makes sense, until a role sits open 4 months and delays your roadmap.”

Or when they push back on fees and you ask, “How much revenue is delayed because this role isn’t filled?”

That’s a post.

Content that sells is translating real conversations into teaching moments.

It's explaining what you see.

That’s what builds authority, inbound leads and increased replies in your outreach.

Keep It Human in the AI Era

AI is everywhere in recruiting right now.

But here’s the real question we got into on our latest episode:

How much of the human aspect are we pulling out when we lean too hard on automation?

Michael Malinowsky, Director of Recruiting at Lean Synergy Solutions, started his recruiting career in the U.S. Army. 

In the military, recruiting meant hunting.
-Finding people where they actually are
-Thinking outside the box
-Building real relationships
-Earning trust with candidates and families

That mindset carried over to the agency world.

We talked about the difference between the art and the science of recruiting. The science is KPIs and numbers. The art is reading people, building relationships, negotiating based on what someone actually values, and caring enough to personalize every touchpoint.

One line that stuck with me:
“Keep it human. Don’t forget there’s a living, breathing person behind every resume.”

In a world where filters auto-reject candidates in seconds and messaging can be written by a robot, the recruiters who win are the ones who personalize their outreach, take time to actually review resumes, focus on fit, not just keywords, and build relationships that help with retention and negotiation

Another meaningful session volunteering with the Arc of Frederick last week.

One program member came back this time with a visual resume, a huge improvement from our last session.

I also worked with someone new who's pursuing a mechanic position. He moved smoothly through most interview questions, paused on one that caught him off guard, and we skipped ahead. After answering the next question, he circled back to address the skipped one.

This is actually good interview practice for anyone. Taking a sec (or two) to think is ok. If you need more time to process a question, embrace the pause. (This is exactly why time accommodations exist in some interview settings.)

During our conversation afterward, he mentioned working on cars as a hobby.  This is exactly when hobbies ARE relevant.  If any side projects translate to the target job, these experiences are well worth talking about.

A few resume tips I keep repeating lately, so I’m just going to put them here. 

1️⃣ Add a company descriptor if the brand isn’t widely known.

Example:   Strategist, XYZ Company (MarTech Series B startup, ~$15M ARR, ~75 employees)

2️⃣ AI. Yes, I know. Barf.   But modern resumes should be showing how you are integrating AI into your day-to-day workflows, research, productivity, etc.  This can also include ethical guardrails, workshops, and training.

 3️⃣Don’t be humble if you’re not under an NDA.   Name the product you built, the campaigns you supported.  If you are a consultant, can you list client/customer work specifically?  These fine details show scope and depth, plus some logos can trigger that industry alignment/appeal.

Any resume questions?  I'm stuck on a flight for the next three hours.  Let it rip.

Feels relevant on this Friday the 13th.

Looking at the handful of people who just landed job offers, I can say they earned those roles because they were the best candidates in the pool.  They crushed their assignments in the interview, prepped for those calls, and asked the right questions when it came to an offer.

No doubt, luck comes into play here and there.  Referrals being one.  But luck can only get you so far.

Sunday job search tips.....

1️⃣ If the role is hybrid, your location matters.

If you’re applying from out of state and the resume says nothing about relocation, that's going to be a rejection from me. I will not be reaching out to everyone individually to clarify that they understand the in-office requirements. 

If you are relocating, define this in the resume. If you’re self-funding the move, even better. In high-supply roles, companies are not stretching on geography unless they have to.

2️⃣ All this "reverse recruiting" talk.  Take a tip out of what should be their playbook and track your search.  A simple spreadsheet with company, role, date applied, and traction.

PS. You know what signals organized? When a candidate immediately references their job search data during a screen.

3️⃣ Get clear on your positioning.  I hear people considering a few job tracks.
 “I could do Customer Success or Account Executive.”

Okay. But can you back that up? Revenue growth. Sales targets. Expansion metrics. Implementation ownership. Relationship management.  Audit your tasks and outcomes first, then engineer if those can be proof to your target job tracks.

Would you pay someone to find you a job?

I’ve been approached numerous times in the past by job seekers in my networking, offering that they would pay me a fee to find them a job . Aka,  the recently coined “reverse recruiting” services.

For the record, I do NOT offer this.  I'll get into why...

But the WSJ article caught my eye this week, covering job seekers paying to be “recruited” because the market feels brutal right now.

One platform mentioned claims access to students from 20 “top-ranked” universities along with partnerships with 2,000+ companies. I have not personally seen this platform show up in real hiring workflows, and I have to wonder how engaged those hiring teams actually are in reviewing these "referrals."

If you are considering any reverse recruiting or apply-on-your-behalf service, ask these questions first:

🔹 What exact actions are they taking on my behalf?
 🔹Am I reviewing and approving every submission, or am I trusting them blindly?
 🔹 How are they answering open-ended questions about my background, gaps, or career moves?
 🔹Do they understand my experience well enough to actually market me?
🔹 Will I get a full report of where they applied, when, and the status of each role?

The core reason I would never take this on is that I would never want to guarantee that I could lock down a job for anyone, as market demand and how one interviews is beyond my control.  I encourage anyone to understand the mechanics and KPI's behind any service representing you to employers.

Scammers will come out of the woodwork, especially when the job market pendulum has swung in their favor.

Instead, hello "service as a software."

I get the take.  On every social platform I am on, I read about people spinning up apps with Claude Code, Replit, or Lovable.  Sometimes, within a matter of hours.  

In theory, everyone can be their own product managers now.  Problem solvers are everywhere.

But I'm just not convinced we are all problem understanders.  Let me give an example near and dear to my little recruiter heart:  The ATS.

There are dozens and dozens of applicant tracking systems. All have their nuances, with different audiences like Enterprise, SMB. Internal TA or Agency.  What's rarer is finding a recruiter who uses one and adores one platform.

🔸Business development workflows are clunky
🔸Tagging and rediscovering talent is complicated
🔸Reporting dashboards aren't tracking the data you want.
🔸The UX is terrible.

And yet, new ATS tools continue to ship and recruitment teams continue to demo them, hoping to discover the one that understands how *that* team moves through their day.

The barrier to building software has crumbled.  The barrier to diagnosing and recognizing the legitimate pain point has not.  

Duplicating an existing product may decrease subscription services for some businesses, but for new custom software--there isn't a guarantee for a product-market fit. 

I'm also not even addressing the maintenance and scaling piece of it... 

Curious to hear everyone else's thoughts here.  Is accessibility really the game changer here?

AI DOES need us.

Who caught RentAHuman.AI?

Alexander Liteplo launched the site this past Monday, a platform where AI agents can rent out humans to complete tasks they aren't able to do.

Within 48 hours, the platform had 73K rentable "meatwads."

What type of tasks are outsourced to humans?

🔹Pick up a package
🔹Attend a meeting
🔹Verify a physical location
🔹Exist anywhere outside a browser

A random bounty:  Post a photo of yourself holding a sign reading “AN AI PAID ME TO HOLD THIS SIGN.”

Humans are paid out through crypto.

Not sure how legit it really is with tons of tasks still open with dozens of "bids."   It's giving Black Mirror.

A client recently gave this feedback after we wrapped up a successful search.

Just another reminder that a talent advisor is not just a keyword-matching, 7-second resume scanning, doesn't know what experience they are screening for gatekeepers.

Sourcing and recruiting is not JUST pattern recognition.

It's understanding context and nuance behind the words on a resume or LinkedIn profile.  Because a job title at one company does not automatically translate to the same scope or influence at another.

Different team structures.  Different resources.  Different technical expectations.

Can a tech tool pick up those reads and find full alignment?  #nah

I'm up for the debate.  Change my mind.

Returning from a week semi off the grid.

Watched a Super Bowl with targeted ads for Alka-Seltzer and Meneparol Plus as opposed to the Levi's, Google, and Lays ads here in the States.  A different experience to say the least....

The only AI conversation I overheard was a man saying he just discovered ChatGPT last month and saying “what a game changer it is.”
