Yesterday's AI GTM Workshop at Clay wasn't what I expected

It was BETTER - here are some insights I gathered from teaching:

1. Improvisation - the wifi went down for 45 min before we started. Normally, people might panic in this situation BUT this created an opportunity for us to openly talk about what each person THOUGHT they wanted to build during the workshop. HOWEVER, their ideas transformed as we asked more questions. This is a beautiful result of being curious, empathetic, and inquisitive. 

2. Every artist has a medium. We deeply believe this at Clay. So, we brought in a sketch artist (Saki- she's amazing!) to recreate each student's favorite photos and bring THEM into her artistic process. The result? People were beaming with joy when they say the finished art. Every artist has a medium. Saki has sketching. Now they (the students) have Clay.

3. Beginners prefer to be GIVEN 1-2 workflows to build. This is contrary to Intermediates who already know what they want to build but just need a little gut check before starting. Next time, we'll let beginners choose from a set of pre-determined usecases (ex: inbound, outbound, crm, etc...)

4. Don't let students "chase the rabbit". Clay is powerful, but with great power comes great responsibility. Just because you CAN do (almost) anything doesn't mean you should - especially given time constraints. During open build, it makes sense to checkin with students every 10 min to ensure they're not going down rabbit holes and coming back empty-handed.

This is only the beginning.

3. Reading before bed instead of Netflix (i feel more rested)
4. Weekly therapy sessions
5. Working out (Weightlifting 4x, Pilates 1-2x, Tennis 1-2x, Salsa 2x)
6. Use the Big Ass Calendar (it forced me to proactively plan a year of adventure)
7. Contrast Therapy (dry sauna with friends feels amazing for my body and soul)
8. Matcha Mornings with core group to just hang and chat once per week
9. Weekend Hikes (walking in nature feels so good)
10. Going for mid-day walks to change up my location (feels more creative and days are less blurred)

This year's themes for me are creating, thriving, and exploring. Last year was focused on community and expansiveness. Last year, I fractured my L1 vertabrae after getting violently thrown off a horse - was bedridden for 3 months. I'm motivated to feel strong, athletic, and explosive again. Bright side - 7 solo skydive jumps!

I am a computer engineer by training interested in AI, growth and infra. I believe great technology is not just built, it’s also marketed and sold. Currently I am leading Go To Market Engineering for Clay.

Previously I was the Head of Growth for Vantage, the cloud cost observability platform and prior to that I led Growth at Arctype before it was acquired by ClickHouse.

I started a company called Perceive which was building infrastructure for cashierless checkout stores. Perceive was awarded a Phase I and Phase II NSF SBIR grant to develop the technology behind our product, including deep learning based human action recognition and multi camera scene reconstruction.

I received a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Purdue University. While at Purdue I performed research with Dr. Yung-Hsiang Lu on multimedia systems and distributed video analysis. We published several papers about our work and its applications. I carried out some of this research at Qualcomm, as part of the Android camera power and performance team.

ADS IN CLAY. The most exciting new feature of everything Clay has been working on in my opinion is Ads.

We are seeing customers get ~much~ higher match rates than they have today against their audiences on LinkedIn, Meta and Google which is a massive win for performance marketing teams.

Ads platforms as a new export destination in Clay also enables very interesting campaigns. For example now you can:

1. Setup website intent in Clay to deanonymize web traffic
2. Search in Find People for your ICP contacts
3 Enrich them to find their hashed advertising IDs using our ads ID waterfall
4. Create audiences in Ads to run ABM campaigns
5. Convert them deeper into the funnel where you can message them via the various messaging tools in Clay

This is in open beta today for enterprise customers and we are looking for lots of feedback from performance marketers to make this best in class.

A $5k angel check I wrote 2 years ago has helped me close $100ks of deals at Clay. This is a story about following your interests and helping your company do cool shit.

I’ve known Paul Klein IV since 2022 when we bonded over a shared love of video technology. At the time he was just leaving Mux (where he sold his first company) and working on something new. We agreed we should work together some day and left it at that.

Most of the time when I post on X no one responds. But when I started thinking about automating browsers, it turns out Paul was listening.

Paul reached out after I posted this Tweet about browser automation (see text thread below). He was building a whole company to give developers APIs to automate browser interactions! I eagerly wrote him a check for Browserbase and said I would be “helpful” (unspecified).

Fast forward to January 2025 at Clay. I was helping customers implement increasingly advanced data points using Claygent. One massive problem kept surfacing: form fills, pagination, and in-website searches. Claygent couldn’t navigate these pages or do anything useful with them.

Couple examples:
- A customer who had broker IDs but their SDRs had to copy them one by one into a website to find licensed brokers.
- A customer that had EINs and their reps were pasting them one by one into a website to find the companies.
- A customer whose reps were paginating websites one by one to find lawyers in specific cities. 
The list went on and on.

So, I started talking with the amazing Jeff Barg and we realized Browerbase could solve this. When I pitched it to Paul, he said “let’s go!” followed immediately by “so what kind of scale would this be” (nervous).

After months of development and client feedback, Claygent’s Navigator launched in August. A visual browser in Clay that could use websites like a human.

The impact was immediate. Navigator now processes millions of page interactions per month. Those "last mile" enrichments that were blocking enterprise deals suddenly became demos. An entire class of enrichments in Clay went from "We can't really do this" to "let me show you how this works in 30 seconds.”

In the end, Clay became Browserbase’s largest customer (at the time), I unblocked dozens of enterprise data deals, Clay’s self serve users got access to powerful new automation technology and (just maybe) I will get a return on my angel investment!

The lesson here is: follow your weird side interests. I couldn't have predicted in December 2023 that Clay customers would want anything like this. I wasn't even working at Clay yet. ChatGPT had just launched a year before. But I was a nerd, Paul was a nerd, and here we are, working together at last.

"I'm thinking about shipping" - my favorite quote from Evan Peters at our Revenue Kickoff on the mindset shift that comes with using Clay.

This is my first ever annual kickoff event and rather than being on stage I've been sitting in the audience and soaking it all in. The customer facing GTM Engineering team I helped start 2 years ago has turned into a full revenue organization with Becca Lindquist Jess Bergson Rob Cook and other leaders scaling it to bring Clay to every company on the planet.

Me? I'm still focused on what Evan is focused on: shipping. There's still so much product to build, so many use cases to solve, so many other verticals that need this, so much happening in AI, and so much GTM Engineering to evangelize 😅 

Happily Clay is fully aligned with this, both as a product and as a company and I think it's kind of rare to be given so much leeway to just build and pursue what makes sense. If you have this mindset in 2026 I would love to work with you. Please DM me and connect!!
