SaaS competition is going to be BRUTAL 

Look at who's consuming the most tokens: Notion, Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk, Shopify, JetBrains. These aren't simple products. Far from it. They're the most complex, feature-rich platforms in their categories. They've spent years adding features, building depth, creating power. And in doing so, they created a massive problem: 

Their products became too complex for most users to navigate.
AI is their answer to that problem.

Eg: Salesforce has thousands of features across dozens of modules. Most users touch maybe 5% of what they're paying for. But with AI, you can just ask "show me all deals likely to close this quarter" instead of building a custom report.

The lost prospect that pissed me off the most?
A French fintech company we'd been courting for months.
Perfect fit on paper, great logo to have, their team was excited about everything we built. Then at the last minute they chose our biggest competitor.

All because our competitor was selling Kanban boards + databases + project management + wikis.

I realized that the leads we were getting wanted an all-in-one solution and couldn't tell the difference between a standard all-in-one and Slite. But Slite had always been opinionated about just being a great knowledge base, but somehow our leads had hesitations because they wanted more.

The answer wasn't to ship more features and catch up to our competitors. That would lose our opinionated feature set of being decluttered and beautiful. We needed to communicate more clearly about who we were.

We chose our lane and repositioned fast. Instead of competing on breadth, we doubled down on being the best knowledge management tool that actually works. We focused on speed, search quality, and AI-powered assistance.

The pivot accelerated our growth. Once we clearly stated that we were for teams who cared about having the best documentation app, the magic happened.

Prospects started choosing us because we solved their specific problem better than anyone else. We still kept getting prospects that wanted an all-in-one, but the new positioning and messaging let them self-disqualify and saved the pressure on our sales team of trying to sell to customers that never wanted something like Slite in the first place.

That lost deal helped us do that. Sometimes you'll lose a deal so right that it'll shake you to re-think everything you thought you knew. And that's when magic in positioning and product thinking happens.

But damn, that rejection stung at the time.

The SF 996 work culture gets criticized a lot, but honestly? It's the default for most founders I know.

It also applied to most startup employees before ~2018, before the massive COVID funding wave.

In 2012, most of my friends out of college joining startups had way lower salaries than others, they were genuinely excited about innovation and building things that hadn't existed before, they wanted to be here for the ride.

My cofounder Pierre still tells me stories of running migrations at nights, working and sleeping in his first company office. And I don't think he'd have traded this for anything in the world.

If you ask anyone who went through this in their 20s in the last decade, I believe the story would have been the same. The long hours weren't glorified or bashed, they just were, but I believe for the right reasons.

It felt sustainable because everyone was doing it for the right reasons (and most people were too young to have families 😅).

996 is a taboo issue now because the "tech world " norm went from startup to scale-up, from bootstrapping to being funded day 1, from joining and be part of a mission to optimising your career by joining the right rocketship. Something shifted, and we began to criticise 996 because we were suddenly judging startups as mature companies.

But, making a startup work is a game against all odds. It requires a crazy amount of attention and care. It's not for everyone, and not everyone should join a startup.

But if you're a startup founder, looking to create generational products, at least for a given point in time, 996 is necessary. And if people join and enjoy this rhythm for a few years, and get rewarded for it, so be it.

It should not be the norm of work, but startups are not the norm, they're the outliers.

People don't understand Claude skills but I couldn't be more pumped
10y ago, I wouldn't have thought I'd be hyped about folders with MD files 😅
But hear me out, Claude Skills are great.

We've been trying to figure out how to package AI expertise for the last few years.

Custom GPTs were too rigid and quite limited.
MCPs are just tools, and need to be wrapped to deliver value.
Claude Projects were quite basic, just a preset of files and simple RAG to prompt on.

Skills might crack it because they're stupidly simple.

So what's a Skill: folder with context + optional code ready to be run. Claude reads a 2-line description. When you need it, Claude loads the full thing to get the extra context + get your custom code tools ready.
That's it.

Here's why that matters.

Your designer spent weeks getting your brand guidelines perfect. Fonts, colors, spacing, logo placement. Now every deck needs to follow them.

Old way: Copy-paste the guidelines into every prompt. Hope people remember. Get inconsistent results.

Skills way: Package it once. Everyone on your team asks for a deck, Claude applies it. No copy-paste. No drift.

You need a chart in there? add some python code to do it. Or generate end embed images, just running a script to the midjourney api.
Need custom team data to feed this deck? use Super MCP in the loop.

Same for code review standards. Support ticket responses. Meeting notes that become action items. Contract redlining rules.
Build it once. Share it. It works the same for everyone.

Skills validate something: simple modules that load when needed, executable when required, shareable across teams.

Anthropic is testing abstractions. This might not be the final form. But it definitely feels like a natural way for how LLMs work. And we'll definitely take inspiration from them if not use them as a basic format standard in our products.

Only 10-15 books on startups have achieved cult status. Every founder has either read it or has it on their shelves. 
But 2 of them set off my internal red flags every time I see them.

They are

1. OKRs - John Doerr's Measure what matters
All companies will implement OKRs at least once in their life.

Maybe it's the new VP at the big org who does it to give the illusion of impact.
But soon the idea spreads and suddenly, you see anxious first-time founders will opt for it as a solution. And it makes perfect sense to them on paper - OKRs signal you're a serious company with clear structures.

But no one tells how to do it, your startup evolves every 3 months, your team is dynamic, and half your tracking for Key Results is a farce.

On the other hand, a large company doesn't have that kind of internal volatility. They're probably an established market player, with a 4+ level hierarchy system where the groundwork becomes opaque to the ones at the top floor. Moreover, they don't have a sense of culture to propel them forward. So OKRs come in, ensure every department knows their lane and HOW they'll impact the bottomline.

You, as a startup, need a strong culture, flat hierarchies, and constant iteration on what you're shipping and how you're selling it.

2. Marty Cagan's Product books
Every PM has read Inspired. It's gospel in product circles.

The ideas make sense when you're at a company with real scale. You've got product-market fit, dedicated teams, engineering resources that aren't stretched thin.

Discovery becomes valuable because building the wrong thing is expensive.
You can afford to say no to features. 
But early-stage founders read the same books and think they need to "professionalize" their product process.

The founder-PM creates a discovery backlog while also doing customer support and trying to close deals. You start separating discovery from delivery when the whole point of being small is that you can do both simultaneously, faster than anyone else.

Cagan's frameworks prerequisite a stability you don't have. They're tools for optimization, not for finding your way in the dark.

And I get it. As a new company, you're always wondering what you're doing wrong. Reading books help you quiet that nagging fear. But as a startup, there's really only 3 things to take care of:
1. Culture
2. Shipping speed
3. Finding PMF

So read wisely, selectively, and don't worry so much - you'll do just fine.

This customer is beating us at our own playbook 🔥🔥

Your sourcing agent is hunting for a product marketer. It finds two candidates:

Profile A: 5 years at Google, launched 3 major campaigns, MBA from Wharton, expertise in growth marketing and analytics.
Profile B: 3 years across 2 startups, built marketing from scratch at a 10-person company, no formal degree, specializes in scrappy growth tactics.

The AI agent sees both profiles and thinks: "Perfect matches!"

A human recruiter immediately picks Profile B. Not because of the resume, but because of context. The human recruiter has been in your Slack chats, seen the long threads about moving fast and avoiding corporate processes. They've watched candidates from big tech companies struggle with your lack of structure. They know that your last Google hire quit after three months because they couldn't handle the chaos.

This accumulated wisdom can't be captured in a prompt. You can't distill years of hiring mistakes, cultural observations, and team dynamics into four sentences and expect AI to make the same nuanced decisions.

Right now, all AI companies need the same motion to close their biggest customers.

We've closed half a million in revenue since launching Super, and still, the main thing that helped us win all the pilots (beyond core quality ofc) was...

Any time a Super prospect comes in
→ We offer them a trial
→ They get a Slack channel with us
→ They run into a wall? They text us and we jump immediately
→ They spot a bug? We resolve within 24 hours
→ They get a crazy idea request? We try to ship a proof of concept the same week if it was part of our plans.

The same trend is happening in enterprise deals too. FDE roles are skyrocketing, with GTM over-promising and product under-delivering, you need to do some plumbing to truly embed AI in their team.

Onboarding needs to stay close-knit until the AI category matures to the point where customers know exactly what to expect and product can deliver that with 100% reliability.

Until then, it only makes sense for B2B sales to adapt, even for mid-market
- A real Solution eng + AE to close
- A Product specialist come work hand in hand post sales for internal deployment

In this weird early phase of AI product, this supplements an enormous amount trust to your customers that they're heard, that their concerns are valid, and that you'll help them implement the tool and scale with their team.

Once you prove that you're trustworthy, you automatically get a leg up from your competitors in the trust race. Even if they offer 1 more integration or a better UX for now, your customers will KNOW that you're there, hearing them, working with them to make your product into something they can safely roll out to their team.

All enterprise search tools look the same 🫠

LE TIMING

Je m’étais fixé une date de début et une date de fin.
Du vendredi 16/05 au 23/05.
Aucun meeting avant, aucun après.

La plus grosse erreur des levées de fonds, c’est de ne pas se mettre une date de fin.
On perd le momentum, les rumeurs et Radio VC s’activent, tout le monde panique.

Maîtrise ton timing, crée la tension et mets-toi une vraie pression personnelle.

LA PERSUASION

Je me suis persuadé pendant 3 semaines que j’allais lever, quand très peu de personnes y croyaient.
J’étais convaincu, obsédé. Et ça s’est senti.

Si tu doutes, ils le sentent et te ferment la porte.
Si tu es sûr de toi, ils doutent et se chauffent.

LA PRÉPARATION

J’ai construit une liste de 48 fonds : le nom, les 5 derniers investissements, les boîtes françaises qu’ils ont financées, et le Partner le plus aligné avec notre thèse.
2 ou 3 podcasts écoutés par partner.

J’ai passé 3 semaines sur un Mémo Notion, une page avec toutes mes convictions et nos chiffres.
Je l’ai fait relire par 7 de mes investisseurs et toute l’équipe.
Je l’ai réécrit 3 fois de zéro.

J’ai fait un choix audacieux : pas de deck.
Je suis meilleur sur Notion que sur Google Slides.
Et honnêtement, c’est la vraie raison pour laquelle on a levé.
La clarté du mémo a tout changé.


LA CHASSE

Derrière ces 5 jours de pitch, il y a eu 18 jours d’outreach.
Je n’ai écrit à aucun investisseur directement.
Mais j’ai contacté 230 personnes pour obtenir ces introductions.
Seuls 67 ont répondu, la moitié m’a fait une intro directe avec le Partner.
Sur les 30 intros, seuls 2 fonds ont refusé.

SHOWTIME

On a fait venir 3 fonds européens dans nos bureaux le vendredi.
Une seule visio, avec Accel.
Dimanche, vol pour San Francisco, 3 jours de pitch, puis vol de nuit pour New York, 2 jours de pitch.

5 jours. 27 meetings.
Lundi 26/05, 23h30 : premier term sheet.

J’ai voulu accélérer en partageant la nouvelle à tous les fonds intéressés.
Ils ont tous droppé.

Deux options :
→ on avait déjà les meilleurs termes,
→ ils n’étaient pas assez chauds.

On a choisi le meilleur fonds possible.
Je n’avais jamais rencontré Base10 avant,
mais Adeyemi a été celui qui m’a le plus challengé, contredit et applaudi.
C’était évident.

LA VERITÉ

Les VCs européens se sentent souvent supérieurs aux fondateurs.
Ils abusent du manque de préparation, de l’asymétrie d’info, du “slow play”.

Les bons investisseurs en Europe se comptent sur les doigts d’une main.
Souvent à Londres ou dans les Nordics.
En France, seul Emblem est au niveau!
Lever en Europe, c’est 3x plus difficile, plus lent et plus épuisant.

LA SUITE EN COMMENTAIRE

Les logiciels sont devenus trop chers. (Surtout pour les petites équipes)
On vient de lever 10 millions d’euros pour corriger ça. 🎉

Toutes les solutions business sont conçues pour les grosses boites. 
Celles qui ne font pas attention aux dépenses. 
Qui pensent que 75€ par utilisateur pour un logiciel, c'est la norme.

Aujourd'hui, c'est fini. L'intelligence artificielle change la manière de construire et de distribuer ces logiciels.

Fini les armées d'ingénieurs dans des open spaces et les coûts d'acquisition au prix d'une Twingo électrique.

OUI, C'EST POSSIBLE de faire un produit simple, beau, performant et 3 fois moins cher que ses concurrents.

On l'a prouvé avec Allo, notre app de téléphonie avec l'IA intégrée au cœur du produit et un prix transparent.

Avec ces 10 millions d'euros, nous allons lancer 3 nouveaux produits, déplacer notre siège social aux États-Unis, recruter une équipe sur place et nous attaquer au plus gros marché du monde.

Son rôle est simple à expliquer, mais difficile à exécuter : rendre notre croissance prévisible, nos décisions mesurables et nos paris plus intelligents que chanceux.

Hawaï, c’est un peu l’opposé de moi.
Là où je lance 10 idées par minute, elle en tue 9,5 avec un sourire.
Là où je vois du potentiel, elle voit un tableau Excel avec 12 hypothèses et un plan d’action en 4 étapes. 
Et franchement, c’est exactement ce qu’il nous fallait.

Brillante, structurée, drôle, et capable de dire non sans jamais casser l’énergie de l’équipe.

C’est rare. Très rare.

No shoes policy 👟
Depuis le début de la boîte, on a adopté cette culture nordique :
aucune chaussure dans nos bureaux (VC inclus).

Ça change tout.
• On travaille comme à la maison
• Ça met tout le monde au même niveau, peu importe ton titre ou ton salaire

J’ai refusé d’investir deux fois dans n8n.
Aujourd’hui, la startup est valorisée 2 milliards…

Félicitations Jan Oberhauser !

Je vous raconte mon plus gros raté d’angel investor…

On était le premier client de n8n chez Spendesk.
On bombardait Jan de feedbacks sur comment améliorer le produit.

On me propose une première fois d’investir début 2021.
Je dis oui.
Puis arrive la paperasse, et là je découvre la galère d’investir dans une startup allemande (notaire, signature en physique…).

Je suis en Colombie, je pars en vacances au Costa Rica, et lors de mon escale au Panama, je suis testé positif au Covid (oui, on avait presque oublié cette époque).
Mis en quarantaine dans un hôtel transformé en hôpital pendant 14 jours, la tête ailleurs, je décline à Jan.

Mais Jan est têtu.
Il revient vers moi six mois plus tard.

Je ne suis plus chez Spendesk, je n’utilise plus le produit, et je commence à me concentrer sur des investissements en Afrique.

Je décline encore.

J’avais prévu d’investir 10 000 €, qui vaudraient aujourd’hui au minimum 280 000 € sur le papier.

Dommage pour le T2 à Toulouse 😂

C’est devenu une tradition : tous les 3 mois, on s’enferme 14 jours dans une maison, en mode « 996 ».
On appelle ça un RETREAT. 
Objectif : accomplir en 14 jours ce qu’on fait normalement en 1 mois. 
Sortir un nouveau produit, lancer une grosse feature, prendre des décisions fortes.

Pour la petite histoire, on n’avait pas de bureau au début ; on a loué une villa pour accueillir les premiers employés et vécu ensemble 2 semaines.

Cette fois-ci, les équipes US, Argentine et France se sont retrouvées à Miami 🇺🇸.

PS : on recrute 8 personnes avant le prochain, en janvier. Intéressé ?

Pas besoin de faire Y Combinator pour bosser dur ou lever des fonds!!
Je vois trop de startups fantasmer sur YC comme si c’était la clé du succès.
Si t’as besoin de lâcher 7% pour te motiver à bosser 12h par jour, y’a un vrai problème.

Chez The Mobile-First Company on n’a jamais fait YC. Par choix.
19 mois après le lancement, l’intensité est plus haute que jamais.

On recrée les mêmes conditions :
> 996
> sprints courts et intenses
> suivi des metrics chaque semaine
> private chef
> 30 business angels qui nous coachent
> une ambition sans plafond

J’ai investi dans Attio et folk en 2020. 
Cinq ans plus tard, ce sont tout simplement les deux meilleurs CRM du monde.

Dans ma carrière, j’ai mis en place HubSpot et Salesforce, et la différence est choquante.

💪 Attio brille par sa puissance et sa flexibilité.
🪄 Folk par sa simplicité et son design.

Les deux partagent la même philosophie :
> faciles à mettre en place
> entièrement personnalisables
> et en moyenne 2 à 3 fois moins chers que les géants historiques.

Tout n’est pas encore parfait (on attend toujours les activités d’appels dans Attio 😅), mais je peux vous garantir que dans 5 ans, Attio et Folk seront les nouveaux standards du CRM.

PS: En vrai, investir dans Attio et Folk, c’était shorter HubSpot et Salesforce.

The US is so big that France fits in Texas.
Germany fits in Montana.
The UK barely covers Oregon.
You could fit almost all of Europe inside America, and it still keeps going.

Yet most people think it’s just New York, LA, and San Francisco.

They forget it’s a whole continent, with hundreds of cities the size of Paris,
each with its own economy, energy, and ambition.

That’s what makes it special.

When you grow up with that much space, you learn to think differently.
You dream bigger. You move faster.

Most Europeans don’t realize how big the US is.
I didn’t either.

J’ai passé la semaine à San Francisco pour participer à un dîner avec Al Gore, l’ancien vice-président des États-Unis, qui a réuni 18 CEOs de la Voice AI.

C’était aussi l’occasion de revenir à SF, quelques jours pour me rappeler à quel point cette ville est unique.

Ce qui est fou avec San Francisco 🌉, c’est l’énergie.
Une bulle d’ambition qui te donne juste envie de faire plus.
Plus vite. Plus grand.

En Europe, on essaie toujours de prouver qu’on peut faire mieux que San Francisco.
C’est impossible.
On doit faire différent.

L’état d’esprit là-bas est incomparable.
Les gens sont transparents, directs, et partagent tout.

Tu prends les mêmes entrepreneurs français, mais installés à SF et tu te retrouves avec les discussions les plus sincères, les plus chiffrées, les plus vraies que j’ai jamais eues.

Quand ta boîte commence à faire 5, 10, 15M€ de CA, tu crois que les problèmes de trésorerie vont disparaître.
La réalité, c’est qu’ils deviennent juste plus gros.

⚡️ Tu peux avoir un pipeline blindé, des clients qui payent… et quand même te retrouver à court de cash au moment de régler tes échéances.

Pourquoi ? Parce que plus tu grossis :

tes cycles de paiement s’allongent

tes charges fixes explosent

tes écarts de 15/30 jours se chiffrent en centaines de milliers d’euros

Et là, peu importe ton niveau de CA : si t’as pas de visibilité claire, tu pilotes à l’aveugle.

Je me souviens d’un moment absurde : une boîte qui faisait plusieurs millions de revenus, mais dont le CFO passait encore ses soirées sur Google Sheets pour comprendre si la boîte allait être en négatif dans 3 semaines.

Aujourd’hui, je refuse de vivre ça.
J’ai un outil simple, visuel, qui me permet de voir ce qui va se passer dans 15, 30, 60 jours côté trésorerie.
Pas besoin de se prendre pour une banque → juste savoir si je dors tranquille ou pas.

👉 Si ta boîte fait plusieurs millions et que tu connais déjà ce stress lié au cash → commente “cash”, je t’envoie mon outil.

Tout le monde parle du 996.
Mais c’est pas le vrai sujet.

Le vrai sujet c’est :
est-ce que les meilleurs de ta boîte sont prêts à venir un dimanche pour régler les vrais problèmes.

J’ai voulu tester.
J’ai écrit samedi soir :
« Demain, 9h-19h, on se met en salle et on règle nos 3 plus gros sujets. Vous êtes chauds ? »

Ils sont venus.
Pas parce qu’il fallait.
Parce qu’ils voulaient.

On a bossé toute la journée, on a vidé la tête, pris des décisions, et surtout, on est repartis alignés.

Le vrai débat, c’est pas combien d’heures tu bosses.
C’est combien de personnes sont prêtes à s’impliquer quand ça compte.

5/20 à mon bac d’anglais.
Et pourtant, quelques années plus tard, je travaille tous les jours en anglais, entouré de collègues qui viennent du monde entier.

Si j’avais eu Duolingo à l’école, je serais bilingue depuis longtemps.
J’ai découvert l’app en 2020, et depuis, je ne l’ai jamais quittée.
1852 jours de pratique, et toujours le même réflexe : quelques minutes par jour, tous les jours.

Aujourd’hui, je fais plus confiance à mon score Duolingo qu’à n’importe quel test officiel pour évaluer le niveau de quelqu’un.
