A while ago, I got a message that genuinely stuck with me.

“Hi… I’m from a non-technical background. I’ve been in HR for years, 
but I want to move into cybersecurity. Be honest, am I being unrealistic?”

Let’s call her Annie.
Annie had built a solid career.

She understood people, processes, confidentiality, and risk.
But none of that sounded like cybersecurity to her.

What she saw online was intimidating:
• Complex job descriptions
• Heavy technical jargon
• A narrative that cyber is only for coders

So she assumed:
“If I didn’t start early, I missed the window.”
That assumption is where most people get stuck.
The truth is, cybersecurity doesn’t just need technical depth.

We don’t just need better cybersecurity tools.
We need more people in cybersecurity. Period.

Right now, digital systems are growing faster than the number of humans protecting them. And that imbalance is risky, not just for companies, but for society as a whole.

Cybersecurity isn’t a niche anymore.
It touches healthcare, finance, public infrastructure, supply chains, and everyday personal data. Yet too many capable people still think “this field isn’t for me”.

This nearly broke my patience.

Leadership requires uncomfortable conversations.

Many early cyber leaders avoid difficult conversations.

Not because they’re weak.

Because they want collaboration.

They soften risk language.
Delay escalation.
Hope alignment appears naturally.

But in cybersecurity, silence compounds risk.

Here’s the leadership reality I eventually learned.

When difficult conversations are avoided, three things happen:

1️⃣ Risks remain misunderstood
2️⃣ Decisions are delayed
3️⃣ Trust slowly erodes

Clear conversations may feel uncomfortable.

But unclear conversations are far more expensive.

Strong cyber leaders don’t create unnecessary conflict.

But they also don’t avoid clarity.

Because the role of leadership is not comfort.

It’s alignment.

“What if I pay for the course… and don’t show up?”

What if I freeze on Day 1?
What if everyone else sounds smarter than me?
What if I’m not “technical enough” like the other cyber folks?
What if I ask a question and it turns out to be basic?
What if I realise halfway through that this isn’t for me?
What if I fail publicly?
What if I waste money, time, or worse, confidence?

These thoughts feel logical.
They feel protective.
But most of the time, they’re just afraid to dress up as “being practical.”

Here’s what we forget:
Everyone who looks confident in cybersecurity once felt lost.
Everyone who sounds smart once asked “stupid” questions.
Everyone who belongs here once wondered if they did.

Not showing up feels safer than trying.
But it’s also how potential quietly dies.
You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room.
You just need to be willing to learn.
You don’t need certainty before you start.

And if you realise later that it’s not for you?

One of the hardest lessons I learned in cybersecurity leadership:

People won’t think the way you do.

And they shouldn’t.

Early on, I expected:

Speed like mine.
Standards like mine.
Detail like mine.

It didn’t scale.

It created friction.

The shift came when I stopped trying to clone myself…

And started building capability around me.

That’s when the role changed.

From:

“Let me show you how I’d do it.”

To:

“Here’s the outcome. Own your path.”

My job became:

– set direction
– define standards
– remove blockers
– protect the team
– step back

Performance didn’t improve because I pushed harder.

It improved because I released control.

Strong leaders don’t multiply themselves.

They multiply capability.

International Women’s Day deserves deeper reflection.

Progress begins when access becomes real.

International Women’s Day isn’t about celebration alone.

It’s about access.

In cybersecurity, talent isn’t scarce.

Opportunity and clarity often are.

Over the years I’ve mentored women who were told:

“You’re not technical enough.”
“You started too late.”
“You don’t fit the mould.”

And yet, many of them were already leading.

Leading quietly.
Leading under pressure.
Leading without the title.

The problem isn’t capability.

It’s visibility.
It’s sponsorship.
It’s confidence shaped by environment.

Real inclusion isn’t symbolic.

It’s structural.

When women are given:

So today, instead of another celebration post, I think there are three things every woman in this industry should pause and reflect on:
