I want to talk about job descriptions (yes, very different from diagnostic content, but it relates somewhat).

I've been actively seeking my next in-house content marketing role for longer than I expected to, while doing a bit of consulting work on the side to help keep me floating. 

I’ve also sat on the other side of the table, semi-involved in screening resumes, working with hiring managers, feeling buried under volume.

Every complaint I hear about talent acquisition starts the same way:
 “We’re getting too many applications and none of them are right.”

And from both angles, I can tell you this without hesitation:
𝟗𝟓% 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

What candidates read is what they respond to.
What you signal is who you attract.
ATS can't fix mixed messages.

From the job seeker side, this is what I often see:

 • Senior titles paired with mid-level scope
 • Entry-level pay matched with executive expectations
 • “Competitive salary” doing the least or maximum amount of work possible
 • Language that quietly screams at applicants to stay away
 • Buzzwords that mean nothing and everything at the same time

When that happens, candidates don’t self-select. They gamble.
And you get flooded.

If you actually want fewer, better-fit applicants, start here:

• POST THE DAMN SALARY RANGE
 Not for compliance. For clarity. People opt in or out instantly.

• MAKE THE TITLE EARN ITS WEIGHT
 Senior roles need senior authority, senior scope, and senior compensation. Same for mid-level management and junior roles.

• WRITE TO THE WORK, NOT A WISHLIST
 Outcomes, decision power, constraints, tradeoffs.

• CUT THE LANGUAGE THAT NORMALIZES DYSFUNCTION
 “Rockstar,” “wear many hats,”, "superhero", “fast-paced environment", "young, fun and dynamic", "family", "chaos,” "hit the ground running", “thick skin”, you get the picture.
 Those aren’t culture builders. Job seekers see them as warning labels.

• RESPECT THE JOB SEEKER'S TIME
 If the JD reads like a Rorschach test, expect unpredictable results.

Yes, the job market is brutal and unfair. Mass layoffs are flooding the pipeline and competition has reached a crescendo.

None of that absolves a clearly written job description.

Candidates apply broadly when hiring managers communicate narrowly and ambiguously.

Recruiters aren’t struggling because they can’t sort applications fast enough.

The first filter is broken.

And that filter is language.

I don’t buy into the myth that content marketing success is about overnight virality or “genius” campaigns.

After 9/11, followed by a recession, Estée Lauder noticed an 11% spike in lipstick sales, where the Lipstick Effect phenomenon came from (heard about it the first time from an episode on one of Jay Shetty's podcasts with Codie A. Sanchez - a great discussion worth tuning into).

Unpopular truth you probably need to hear:

Admitting you 𝑐𝑎𝑛'𝑡 do something won't hurt your brand credibility.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥.

We've been conditioned to say yes.

To be flexible.
To figure it out later.
To never let a deal slip.

So brands nod along to requests they shouldn't touch.

Services they aren’t built for.
Products that don’t solve the problem.
Timelines that ignore reality.

Why? Because saying "no" feels expensive.

But what actually breaks trust is misalignment and not so much telling your customers you don't have what they need.  

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐛𝐮𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 "𝐧𝐨":

- They look small.
- They look incapable.
- They look like they’re leaving money on the table.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐞:

👍 Precision
👍 Self-awareness and confidence
👍 Honesty and transparency

Confidence isn’t about claiming range but more knowing your edge, including limits.

A clear “that’s not what we do” signals more competence than a vague “we can make it work.”

B2B buyers don’t need you to have or know everything.

→ But they need certainty from you. 

They want to know:

• Will you deliver on your promises?
• Will you be upfront before things go sideways?

Ironically, saying no often 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑠 deals.

It lowers risk.
Sets expectations.
Creates trust before the contract is signed.

Yes, you might lose some opportunities.

But they’re usually the ones that would’ve drained your team, stressed delivery, and quietly eroded your reputation anyways.


Serious buyers notice when you act with intention and not just with availability.

Your content can leave a mark … even months and years after it’s published.

Sounds farfetched?

In a groundbreaking 1990s experiment, two Russian scientists — Dr. Vladimir Poponin and Dr. Peter Gariaev — placed human DNA in a vacuum and shined a laser light through it.

​They witnessed something incredible: an interference pattern emerged that perfectly mirrored the DNA’s structure.

​Most hauntingly, even after the DNA was removed, the pattern remained — a ghostly silhouette of light that lingered in the empty vacuum.

​This became known as the 𝐃𝐍𝐀 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭.

​The vacuum didn’t behave like empty space but it did seem to remember the structure, temporarily holding an order that was no longer physically there.

Great content does the same.

Most teams think all they need is to hire writers who “know the product” or “have extensive industry experience and knowledge.”

But expertise alone isn't enough to make your content stick.

To create pieces that relate, gets people talking, and echos through your audience:

 🔹 Start with writers who can research, interview, and communicate like pros.
 🔹 Arm them with internal insights and product know-how.
 🔹 Give them access to experts for that next-level nuance.
 🔹 Provide clear, actionable creative briefs.
 🔹 Supplement with AI and automation tools where needed.
 🔹 Give feedback, support, and time to refine.
 🔹 Keep your team motivated, challenged, and rewarded.

Knowledge isn’t magic. Execution is.

The content you craft and share today can resonate tomorrow.
