It's an amazing list of very large gifts to an incredible, diverse array of grantees.  Her total gifts from 2025 total more than $7 billion--this year alone. It's inspiring generosity at the end of a terrible 2025 for our grantee partners and so many others. Her total giving since 2019 tops $26 billion.

We are proud to be among those funders who have taken the Level Up Pledge to increase our grant-making by at least 20% in 2025 and 2026. Thanks to Aaron Dorfman and the 10 organizations behind this pledge at CHANGE Philanthropy. Here is hoping that we can grow this cohort of more than 30 philanthropies into a much larger group. This is a timely discussion as many foundation boards meet in early to mid December to set budgets and game plans for the coming year.

Last month MacArthur gathered for our first-ever global All-Staff retreat (radical, I know--for an organization that began operations in 1978). In a year that has been extraordinary--after responding to one manmade crisis after another--it was an important moment to step back, connect, inspire, and celebrate our wins and learn from our losses together. We stretched our creative thinking to envision how we can do more together. And there was definitely some laughing and crying.
 
Our Board Chair Juan Salgado and I spoke about the state of the foundation, moderated by Professor Amina A Salihu. One of the most valuable aspects of this retreat was learning from one another and hearing new visions for the future, along with unexpected ideas.
 
We are always looking for ways to make things possible. As a result, one concrete initiative that emerged from this retreat was our recent $1.5 million in funding to support Chicago organizations that are feeding our neighbors at a time of uncertainty for federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. This kind of support is outside our usual grantmaking strategy, but exactly the kind of idea that we should be cultivating at MacArthur.
 
We ended our time together with a day volunteering with Chicago organizations! I planted trees with Openlands, and MacArthur Foundation Staff also packed food with Nourishing Hope, packed hygiene kits with Brave Space Alliance, sorted and quality checked essential items for people experiencing poverty with Cradles to Crayons, and sorted plastics with alt_ Chicago.
 
I am left with gratitude for MacArthur Staff, our grantees and partners, everyone who shared their expertise or voiced an idea, and especially the team who organized the event: Nancy Ukpe Gargula, Sybil Madison, Shayne Purdue, and Lisa R..

To everything there is a season. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, there is a time for every purpose under heaven. After prayerful reflection, I have decided my season of service at United Way Worldwide will come to a close in Spring 2026. 
 
This decision has not been easy. I stand at a consequential moment that many of you may recognize. I have lost my father, one of the two most important people in my life. One of the last requests my father made of me was to take care of my mother. I have been balancing the role of caregiver and CEO for several years, and now, I find that this is no longer sustainable. My mother once put her aspirations and goals on hold to raise me and my siblings. We were always first and foremost, especially when my father was away serving our country. She needs me now, and it is my honor to place her at the top of my day-to-day priority list. 
 
I will continue to cheer United Way on and support this global network that means so much to me. United Way has truly been a blessing in my life. I am deeply grateful for the privilege of having served with this incredible team.
