Early in my leadership journey,
I mistook quiet rooms for strong alignment.

No pushback.
No friction.
Nodding heads.

I thought I was leading well.
I wasn’t.

People weren’t aligned.
They were careful.

And careful teams don’t build bold companies.

If no one challenges you,
you might not be respected.
You might be avoided.

That’s not leadership.
That’s authority on paper.

The higher you rise,
the less truth you automatically hear.

People filter.

→ Skills matter. So does backbone.

9. Put data above hierarchy
→ Let evidence outrank seniority.

Policies shape culture.
But your reaction reveals it.

Here’s the real test:

When someone challenges you,
does your body tense ...
or does your curiosity rise?

Great leadership isn’t about agreement.

It’s about being brave enough to be wrong.
And smart enough to grow from it.

If no one challenges you, 
you’re not leading. 
you’re just managing an echo.

Fear of death
Out of your control.

People forget fast. They move on to their own lives.

Fear of losing everything
You rebuild. Humans are wired to adapt.

Here is the 3 Step Fear Audit:

1. Define the worst case clearly
Not vaguely. Specifically.

2. Ask, can I recover?
In most business and career decisions, yes.

3. Calculate the cost of inaction
Regret compounds. Avoidance compounds.

Example:

Launch the idea.

Worst case
Low traction. Public flop.

Reality
You gain feedback. Improve. Try again.

Fear says permanent damage.

Reality says temporary discomfort.

Keep climbing.

Most ceilings are mental.

A fake caring culture is worse than a toxic one.
At least with toxicity, you know where you stand.

Fake caring hides behind smiles.
It says "we care", but means "please don’t make this uncomfortable".
It praises your work in meetings...then ignores your feedback after.

It’s leadership with empathy in words,
and apathy in action.

Here’s how fake caring shows up at work:

1️⃣ "We hear you" → but nothing changes.
2️⃣ "We’re like a family" → until KPIs drop.
3️⃣ "We value feedback" → unless it’s critical.

The result?
Distrust. Burnout. Quiet quitting.

Because pretending to care kills trust faster than open conflict ever could.

Real care isn’t a slogan.
It’s honesty, follow-through, and doing the right thing even when it’s inconvenient.

Most ads fail for one simple reason:

They focus on the product instead of the person.

Great copywriting flips that.

It’s not about sounding clever.
It’s about making people feel understood.

Here are a few timeless copywriting principles that still drive results today:

1️⃣ Sell what people want. Deliver what they need.
People buy the promise first.
But they stay for the real value.

2️⃣ Features tell. Stories sell. Emotion closes.
Listing features informs people.
Stories help them see themselves using it.

3️⃣ Every word should connect to the customer’s problem.
Your product isn’t the hero.
Your customer is.

4️⃣ Good copy pulls, it doesn’t push.
Curiosity is one of the most powerful marketing tools.
Make people want to keep reading.

5️⃣ Your CTA should feel like a reward.
Instead of: “Submit form.”
Try: “Get your free strategy.”

6️⃣ People don’t read ads.
They read what interests them.
Your job is to make the message about them.

There are also proven frameworks that simplify writing:

• AIDA – Attention → Interest → Desire → Action
• PAS – Problem → Agitate → Solution
• FAB – Features → Advantages → Benefits
• 4Cs – Clear, Concise, Compelling, Credible

You don’t need to reinvent marketing.

You just need to understand how people think and decide.

Because the best copy doesn’t feel like marketing.

It feels like someone finally understood your problem.

At 23, I built a $3.5M ARR dev agency.

But I made a fatal mistake, and lost it all.

I was working 96 hr weeks. 7 days straight.

I had no life. And burnout became my bi-weekly rest-day.

I was completely miserable.
Depressed even.

But I wanted to win so badly.  So I kept pushing. Squeezed every ounce of blood I had into it.

A client literally said this to me.

In 2016, I was running a dev agency.

He had a $751K project.
And I was eager.
(desperate, if we're being honest)

But something about him felt wrong.

During onboarding he:

→ Insulted my entire team (within 5 mins of arriving).
→ Made a bunch of weird jokes about suicide.
→ Carolin broke down crying. Her uncle had just committed suicide.
→ So he demanded I fire her for being "too soft".

Yeah, real charmer.

I lay awake that night thinking about it.

$751k is a lot of money.
But 2 years with this guy? I'd rather go to jail.

I got to the office early that morning.

Sat at my desk for 10 mins, staring at his number.
Then called him (shaking)

And I completely let her down.

Every day I'd wake with a new "brilliant idea":

Monday: "Focus on Instagram."
Tuesday: "Actually, LinkedIn."
Wednesday: "Wait! Youtube."

Poor Goldie.

She'd stay up til 10pm for our meetings. Then I'd cancel
"sorry last minute dinner plans"

When she asked for clarity, I got defensive.
"Just use your initiative"

I fired her because she "asked too many questions"

And I did the exact same thing to the next hire.
And the next.

Took me 6 yrs to realise:

I wasn't hiring badly.
I was just a shitty leader.

Looking back over the message threads, I felt so stupid. And ashamed.

I'd made them think they failed me.
When in fact, I'd completely let them down.

Today things are different:

Clearly this is a joke 🙃 please stop taking notes.

This week, I failed. I worked more than 25 hrs.

And now I'm a total fraud.

OK, a little drastic.

I usually work 4hr a day.

But this week was big:

→ Extra time on content
→ Doubled down on DM-ing
→ Lived on LinkedIn

The hours crept up without me noticing.

And I fell into the OLD pattern. Equating hours-worked with self-worth.

Those extra hours? Not even productive. Just spinning my wheels.

So I'm course-correcting:

1) Start each day with a plan
2) Strict log off time
3) 1hr of LinkedIn daily (MAX)

I'm building leverage. Not logging hours.

That's what moves the needle.

Are you working more than you should?

I cut my work to 4 hrs a day,

And felt like a fraud.

Because I was the guy who sacrifices more.
Pushes harder.
Sleeps less.

"I'll sleep when I'm dead" (I said that....*cringe*)

But it's weird.

Because I wasn't addicted to work.
Not really.

I was addicted to the circles under my eyes.

And the identity it gave me.

So when I cut my work to 4 hrs a day,
I didn't feel free.

I felt f—king guilty.

I'd finish work at noon and feel like I was cheating.

Took me years to shake that.

The hard part wasn't working less.

It was letting go of the guy who "outworked everyone".

Does a 4 hr day excite you? Or scare the sh*t out of you?

"I'm drowning, man..."

He wasn't exaggerating.

My mate, Jay, runs a 7-figure DTC baby brand.

Last year, we're on Zoom, and the guy looked like he hadn't slept in days.

"I'm managing everything. Supply chain. Paid ads. Email..."
(typical founder...)

He was completely maxed out.

Daily panic attacks.

"I'm anxious all the time, bro.
It's f—ked.... I'm ready to give up."

I've been there too.

Nearly ran myself into the ground with my first business.

So I told him:

"The problem isn't the business. It's the story you tell yourself...

that suffering means you've earned it"

It's a total croc of sh*t.

So we made a deal:

> 6 key hires over 18 months (to delegate the work)
> A real management rhythm (to manage momentum)
> And a hard cap. 8 hrs/day (no more weekends)

His eye twitched at the last one.

But he did it.

And 18 months later:

→ $2.2M to $6.7M ARR
→ Working <6 hrs a day
→ On track for $12M next year

Last month he FaceTimed me from a 2 week surf trip in Bali. Big, dumb grin on his face.

"I feel amazing. Life's good!"

And he's already planning 6 months abroad.

The lie founders get told is you have to choose: 'freedom' or 'finance'.

But the truth?

You can have both.

I haven't cleaned my own home for 9 yrs.

I just live in my own filth.

OK, not true.

But I still don't do it. For 2 reasons:

1. I really don't like cleaning (it sucks)
2. It's bad use of my time.

I bill $300/hr (USD).
A cleaner costs $25/hr, give or take.

Do the math.

Founders say they value their time. Then spend most of it on $20/hr tasks.

I refuse.

And I use the same logic in business.

There are people who are better at headhunting, project management, etc.

And I can hire them for a fraction of what I bill.

But very few can build a company, set the direction, and design the machine.

That's me.

When I delegate low-value work,
I unlock time for high-level work.

What's one task you should've delegated months ago?

I'm a mascot with a LinkedIn account.

But someone else runs the business.

I post. Do sales calls. 
"Build in public."

Basically, I'm a show pony.

Meanwhile, Melani (my wife):

→ Leads our team when I'm off "visioning"
→ Builds the backend I pretend to understand
→ Reminds me I'm 5 mins late for my next call

I’ve built a business solo before.

It worked.
But it was chaos.

Because I'm a typical founder.

I ride the highs and lows like it's a theme park.

One day, conquering the world.
Next day, questioning my life choices.

She's the calm hand, when I'm spinning out.

This year we'll:

→ More than 2x our business
