Reconciliation isn’t a finish line. It’s a daily decision to walk differently, to listen deeply, to choose love where silence once preached.

No country is perfect, Canada included.

Imagine your child taken from you.
No goodbye. No call. No return.

And worse yet, imagine being that child.
No comfort. No family. No hope.

That was what happened for generations of Indigenous families. And the silence that followed has been deafening for far too long.

This year, a permanent home for truth is being built at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. A home for the stories that were buried. A home for the children who never came back. Because there is no healing without ownership, and this is a step forward.

Some truths aren’t comfortable. They never were meant to be. The thing is, truth can’t live only in archives. It has to live in us. In how we parent. In what we teach. In the way we choose humanity over denial. In the way we refuse to repeat the past.

September 30th marks the 5th Annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This is not remembrance alone. This is a demand: every child matters, now and always.🧡

I went to see my brother the other day.
We planned a hike.

Out of nowhere, he started asking me questions.
Any issues with your knees or hips?
How are your ankles and back?
Are you good with long walks?
Uneven ground okay?
Uphill or downhill, a problem?

WHAT!!! 

We have hiked a million times together. Never mind the wild adventures we used to take on my banana-seat and his BMX bike back in the 80s.
I was surprised at first. The more I thought about it, the more I understood it. 
We’re getting older. 
 
 
That’s one of the reasons I started #TheHealthHaven. Not to live forever.
Not to chase some perfect number. But to feel alive today.

To move, eat, play, and meet the world in the best shape we can, right now.
Tomorrow matters too, sure.
But today is the only day we can touch.

People say they would die for their kids.
How about we live for them?
Choose to live.
Choose you.
Choose a little better than yesterday.

I got a message the other day asking if I’d been kidnapped.
A few others were ready to send out the troops.
LinkedIn family, you are something else!!! Thanks for checking in. 

And yes, I’ve been quiet.
So today feels like a good day to drop in with a thought.

A colleague told me he goes to the same bar every night after work.
Same stool, same crew, same story.
He said it so casually, “I don’t have a wife. No kids. No responsibilities. If I went home, I wouldn’t fall asleep until two or three anyway… so why not?”

And I get it. I really do.
There’s no judgment here. Just a different angle. 
Something I wish we talked about more honestly.

Every yes has a shadow.
Say yes to the bar, and you quietly say no to everything else.
No to the gym.
No to a book.
No to getting your life in order.
No to becoming someone you’d actually want to wake up as.

This isn’t just about a bar.
This is about the quiet math of our choices.
Every time you say yes to something, even something small and soft and familiar, you are saying no to something else.

And that “no” is usually to your future self.
It’s never dramatic in the moment.
One night feels harmless.
But anything compounded becomes a life.
We don’t become who we want to be.

We become whatever we repeatedly choose.
If nothing changes, nothing changes.

And if you want better, you have to choose better.
Not once.
But often enough that the scales finally tip your way.

Your YES is shaping you.
Your NO is shaping you too.

Choose like you’re building something with your own hands… because you are.

Last week, completely unplanned and wildly inconvenient for the life I’m trying to hold together with duct tape and good intentions, I found myself in the ER.

Appendicitis.
Out of nowhere.

And just so we’re clear, it’s not a sign of poor health. It’s not something you “cause.” It’s anatomy and timing. Anyone can get it.

My appendix was done.
A tiny organ with a loud exit!!!

I wouldn’t call myself the healthiest person on the planet, but I pay attention. Every day I try to eat what fuels me instead of drains me. Every day I move my body. Nothing extreme. Nothing fancy. Just consistent. Small things that don’t look like much until they’re suddenly everything. EVERYTHING. 

When they rushed me into emergency surgery, the checklist was simple.

No red flags.
No complications.
No concerns.

And because of that, the surgery was manageable.

Recovery was fast.

My doctors kept saying, “You’re bouncing back quickly,” and I kept thinking, this is what the little habits were for. All those tiny choices I made when I couldn’t see the payoff, this was it. They stacked up. They carried me. 

We can’t control the curveballs.
But we can CONTROL how ready our body is when life throws one.

Recently, I wrote about how so many of us say we would die for our kids. Thankfully, we live in a world where we don’t have to. So maybe the real question is: how are we living for them?

Better yet, how are we teaching them what strength looks like in real time?

My kids were terrified when I went into the ER.

Twenty-four hours later, they were inspired.

Not because I’m superhuman.
Because I’ve been quietly doing the work, day after day.

They won’t remember what I told them about health.

They’ll remember the way I lived every single day. 

And the day I was tested, how fast I rose.

That kind of proof will stay with them forever. ❤️
