I've been building backlinks for 17 years, we'll sell over $4.5M of links this year, and I have NEVER seen Google reward authority and quality link signals like they are right now. 🔗

Yet most SEOs STILL buy links that do nothing… because Google neutralizes them.

Here’s my exact SOP for picking links that actually increase rank, ROI and AI visibility:

1 - Ignore Metrics, Do Your Due Diligence
Metrics are EASILY manipulated, even the “organic traffic” inside Ahrefs/SEMRush.

Check link profiles manually. If the site doesn’t rank anything in your niche → the link is a pillow, not power.

2 - Page-Level ROI Test
Before buying ANY link, ask: “How much can this link make me?”

In high-ARPU niches, you can budget links by targeting specific money/supporting pages based on price vs potential return.

3 - Anchor Safety = SERP Reality
Most SEOs choose anchors based on what they want.

Google rewards what the SERP shows is safe.

If the top 10 use:
 • Brand/URL → use brand/URL
 • Soft partials → use soft partials
 • UGC/parasites → stay conservative

Match the consensus. Don’t fight it.

And if competitors have ZERO direct links? Don’t force them unless the individual link has exceptional relevancy/trust.

4 - Outbound Link Neighbourhood Check
If a site leaks outlinks to casinos, CBD, crypto, Viagra — and you’re NOT in those industries, your link is likely devalued.

Google does track link neighbourhoods.

Sit next to trash, you ending up smelling like trash...

5 - Indexation & Editorial Health
Avoid sites that are:
 • Bleeding indexation
 • Losing keywords
 • Publishing AI slop
 • Pushing hundreds of posts with zero rankings

Power sites GROW. Zombie sites DRAIN.

6 - Traffic Stability (6-18 Months)
You don’t want a site that had traffic, you want one that KEEPS it.

Look for: smooth growth, logical seasonality, no update cliffs, no sudden programmatic spikes.

Stability = trust. Trust compounds.

7 - Internal Link Inclusion
A link on a page with no internal links = weak.

A link with supporting internals, topical hubs, and strong navigation delivers 3–10× more power.

Context = equity.

8 - Avoid Orphan Links
If the page has:
 • No internal links in or out
 • No social signals
 • No backlinks
…it’s basically a paid nofollow.

Orphan pages = orphan signals.

9 - The AI Visibility Test
If you want to appear in AI Overviews/model citations, your links must sit inside authoritative, entity-rich context:
- Editorial pages ✔
 - Topical clusters ✔
 - Structured data ✔
 - Strong authorship signals ✔
 - UGC authority domains ✔

In AI SEO, context around the link matters more than the link itself...

In traditional SEO though, most SEOs don’t have a link building problem, they have a link selection problem.

Google isn’t rewarding more links… Google is rewarding better signals.

Fix what you buy → fix what you rank!

The EU just launched an antitrust investigation into Google's site reputation abuse policy - Probably the most misguided search policy ever released...

Not allowing ANY third party content is stupid, as if outsourcing has never existed... And the enforcement was inconsistent at best.

This was PR and propaganda to bully publishers into compliance, not to "protect users" - If they really wanted to protect users, they wouldn't have rolled out AI Overviews with no fact checking or verification.

This is going to be very interesting though! Google will likely have to reveal even more of it's search secrets in court if they want to defend this, or they'll have to cancel the policy entirely in the EU.

One way or another, this is at least a small win for the publishers and SEOs that tried to make money the exact same way Google does, with monetization on top of third party content.

When I started in SEO, I thought I needed:

Here's what actually happened when I stopped waiting and started doing 👇

Searched  different keywords like "dentist near me." Found 10 businesses with terrible websites.

⤷ I audited them for free.

Your rankings are stuck because of broken internal links.
I see this all the time...

Great content.Strong backlinks. 

But pages that should be ranking on page 1 are buried on page 3.

Why? The internal link structure is a mess.

Here’s how to fix it 👇

↳ Step 1: Map What You Have
Use Screaming Frog to crawl your site and export:
- All URLs
- Internal link count per page
- Anchor text distribution

Then, layer in data from:
- Google Analytics 4 (traffic data)
- Ahrefs (backlink metrics)
- Google Search Console (ranking positions)

This gives you clear, actionable insights not guesses.

↳ Step 2: Find Your Money Pages
Look for pages that:
- Get traffic but could benefit from more
- Have backlinks (Google trusts them)
- Drive conversions or revenue
- Rank between positions 4-20 (easy to push higher)

These pages need more internal link power.

↳ Step 3: Build Strategic Links
For each priority page, ask:
- "Which blog posts already mention this topic?"
- "Where can I naturally add a helpful link?"
- "What anchor text makes sense here?"

Add 3-5 relevant internal links from related content. Be natural. No forced links.

↳ Step 4: Fix Your Anchor Text
Take a look at your current anchor text:
- Avoid "Click here" or "Read more"
- Don’t overuse the same exact match keyword

Instead, use:

- Descriptive, relevant keywords
- Natural variations
- Contextually appropriate anchor text

↳ Step 5: Rescue Orphan Pages
Pages with no internal links are invisible to Google.
- Find orphan pages using Screaming Frog and link to them. 
- Aim for at least 2-3 relevant, contextual links.

↳ Step 6: Prioritize What Moves the Needle
Focus on:
- Pages ranking between 4-15 (push them to page 1)
- High-converting pages with low traffic
- Cornerstone content
- New content that needs internal links

Internal linking is fully under your control.
No outreach, no waiting, no budget required.

Simple rule: If Bing can’t crawl you, ChatGPT won’t cite you.

2. Structure content for AI extraction

ChatGPT doesn’t “rank” pages.
It extracts structured answers.

Use extraction-ready formatting:
 → Headings that mirror real user questions
 → First line = direct answer
 → Short, crisp paragraphs
 → Bullets and numbered lists
 → Include quotable statistics

Example:
 
H2: What Is SEO?
Opening line: “SEO is the practice of optimizing websites for search engines.”

Match the question. Answer instantly.

3. Build backlinks from sources AI trusts

Not all backlinks matter anymore.
AI relies disproportionately on trusted knowledge bases.

Nearly 50% of ChatGPT’s citations come from Wikipedia.

Your strategy:
 - Ask ChatGPT questions in your niche.
 - Study which publications it cites often.
 - Target those for backlinks and mentions.

Common AI-trusted sources:
 → Wikipedia
 → Good Housekeeping
 → Industry publications
 → Reddit threads
 → High-authority niche sites

Depth matters too:
Articles 2,900+ words → avg 5.1 citations
Articles < 800 words → avg 3.2 citations

Longer, deeper, structured content wins.

You don’t always need a backlink.
 
A brand mention is enough for AI to pull you into the conversation.

Strong GEO depends on:
 → Clear, structured answers
 → Schema markup
 → Expert profiles
 → Mentions on high-trust publications
 
If Good Housekeeping mentions your cookware brand, ChatGPT may include you in its recommendations, even without a link.

Be where AI already looks.

This shift isn’t coming. It already happened.

Brands ranking in Google have a chance at LLM visibility.
 
Brands that don’t rank?
They’re already out of the race.

I had a client come to me with the weirdest problem.

Their Google Business Profile? Ranking perfectly. 
Their blog posts? Getting solid traffic. 
Their homepage for brand keywords? Invisible.

Zero traffic. Zero rankings. Nothing.

Here's what I found 👇

Everything looked "fine" at first glance:

→ GBP was ranking on Google 
→ Blog content was performing well 
→ Website was technically sound

But when people searched their brand name… 
Their own website wasn't showing up.

I did a deep audit. Checked everything.

Then I found it.

Their NAP (Name, Address, Phone) was a complete mess:

• Different address on Yelp 
• Wrong details on local citations 
• Inconsistent information across directories 
• Every listing had slightly different variations

Google couldn't figure out which business was the "real" one.
So it didn't trust the website enough to rank it.

I went through every single listing I could find:

✅ Corrected the address on Yelp 
✅ Fixed local citations one by one 
✅ Made NAP 100% consistent everywhere 
✅ Updated every directory with the exact same details

That's it.

No fancy strategy. No technical wizardry.
Just basic NAP consistency.

The Result:
Their website started ranking for brand keywords.

Homepage traffic went from zero to exactly where it should've been all along.

NAP consistency is NOT sexy.
But it's one of the most overlooked ranking factors in local SEO.

If Google sees 10 different versions of your business info… 
It won't trust any of them enough to rank you.

Your business details should match EXACTLY across:

→ Your website 
→ Google Business Profile 
→ Yelp 
→ Facebook 
→ Every citation and directory
