First, I founded Rizevo, a software that helps service providers automate appointment scheduling and payment collection.

Next, as a fun project, my wife and I built Questionwave — a simple Q&A app for events. It became the #2 Product of the Day on Product Hunt, and now has thousands of users globally.

I coined the term, Product-Led Storytelling, and developed its battle-tested execution frameworks (ICP StoryScripts and StoryBriefs & Outlines) at VEC Studio, the company I founded.

Through this combined product and content marketing strategy design and story-driven execution approach, my team at VEC Studio has helped SaaS Founders and B2B Marketers to:

What can kill a startup with over 500,000 customers? 

A tiny leak that initially looks like a rounding error. 

After raising a $63 million Series D or cruising past $100M in ARR, most startups take a wrong turn.

They stop building a product that serves unique needs; they ascend to building a legacy. They deploy a parachute. They want to cover everything, be everywhere, and catch everyone. All without nuance. 

Bitly reached this altitude around 2022. 

They believed their job was to simply exist as the layer between a company and its audience. They assumed that because they were the “leader of link management,” they were invincible. 

But here is the danger of a massive parachute: it makes you slow, and it makes you blind to the sharp objects below.

If Steven Tey had launched Dub.co in October 2022 with a generic “Better Link Management” story, they would have bounced right off Bitly’s canopy. 

They would have died in the shadow of the giant.

Instead, Dub brought a needle.

They launched with a product story so sharp, so specific, and so technically arrogant that it pierced right through the fabric of Bitly’s dominance.

Their H1 didn’t promise “brand visibility.” 

It said four words:

“Open Source Bitly Alternative”

This wasn’t marketing; it was a dog whistle.

To 99% of Bitly’s customers—the corporate marketers, the HR departments—this story meant nothing. They didn’t care about “open source.”

But to the top 1% of the market—the developers, the builders at Vercel and Raycast—this story was a revelation. It signaled: “We are not them. We are you.”

By positioning themselves as the “Open Source” alternative...

Dub did two brilliant things:

They qualified their audience: They attracted the technically savvy influencers who set trends.

They lowered CAC: The developer community spread the tool organically.

Bitly, floating high in the sky, didn’t feel the prick. 

But that tiny hole in the parachute began to leak.

The developers who signed up didn’t just shorten links; they started moving their companies’ infrastructure over. They brought Dub into the boardrooms of the fastest-growing startups in the world.

But Dub didn’t stay there. Once the needle was in, they pulled out a knife.
