Elias is an incredible passionate young Surveyor with a sound core background in Geomatics. Elias is vast and has a decade experience in various aspects of Geomatics including Hydrographic Surveys, Cadastral Surveys, Topographical Surveys, Engineering Surveys, UAV Surveys, Remote Sensing, GIS and Mapping at large.

In recent years, Elias has developed a keen interest and specialized in Ocean Mapping and Hydrography, he has been a part of several offshore survey projects ranging from rig move, SEWOPs and barge positioning, subsea positioning, ROV tracking, dive support, field development; geophysical and geotechnical surveys, offshore construction support, as-built surveys, clearance surveys, dimensional control surveys with the dynamic and combining roles of Online Surveyor, Data Processor, Geophysicist, Survey Engineer and Party Chief depending on the project. 

His hands-on skills with various land and hydrographic survey equipments is top notch including surface and underwater positioning systems, single-beam and multi-beam echo sounders, side scan sonars, sub bottom profilers, magnetometers, sector scan sonars, total stations, DGPS, digital levels et al.  

Beyond geospatial and hydrospatial data acquisition, Elias has knacks for processing, interpreting, charting and technical reporting of land and offshore survey projects data, with emphasis on geophysical survey data (Multibeam echo-sounder, Sub-bottom profiler, Side scan sonar, magnetometer), making meaningful inferences in-line with the scope. 

Elias is proficient with the use of various hydrographic and geospatial softwares not limited to EIVA Navisuite, Hypack, QPS suite (Qinsy, Qimera, Fledermaus, and FMGT), AutoCAD Suite(AutoCAD Classic, AutoChart, Map3D, Civil 3D), SonarWiz, CARIS, Magpick and Magmap packages, Global Mapper, ArcGIS, QGIS, Surfer, Global Mapper, MATLAB, ENVI, Erdas Imagine, Python. 

Elias is currently a Graduate Research Assistant at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / Joint Hydrographic Center at the University of New Hampshire where he is pursuing a PhD in Ocean Engineering. His research focuses on employing a multidisciplinary approach to characterize and quantify uncertainty in interpolated bathymetry. He’s also passionate about ocean exploration.

AUV vs. Hull-Mounted Seafloor Mapping: What’s the Difference? 🌊

Multibeam echosounders (MBES) have revolutionized how we map the seafloor. But not all MBES platforms are created equal, and the choice between AUV-mounted and hull-mounted systems often comes down to one key question: What resolution do you really need?

Hull-mounted MBES systems (typically installed on ships and USVs) are the workhorses of modern ocean mapping. They have helped us map most of the 27.3 percent of the world’s oceans that meet modern mapping standards. However, their achievable resolution decreases with depth.

For context: at about 4000 m depth (roughly the average ocean depth), a hull-mounted MBES with a 2° × 2° beam width can achieve about 140 m lateral resolution at nadir and about 280 m at a 60° swath angle.

AUV-mounted MBES systems, on the other hand, operate much closer to the seafloor and can achieve much higher resolution in deep water than is possible from a ship. This makes them ideal for applications such as detailed habitat mapping, underwater archaeology, and pipeline inspections.

But AUVs come with their own challenges, particularly horizontal positioning accuracy, limited endurance, and smaller mapping coverage compared to ship-based systems.

📌 The difference in resolution is striking, but so is the question:
🤔 What resolution do you really need?!

💡Takeaway:
Higher resolution is powerful, but fit-for-purpose mapping is what truly matters. Sometimes, broad coverage at slightly lower modern resolution is far more valuable than ultra-detailed data over a small area.
