The first few dates aren’t that serious.
Stop treating them like interviews.

Dating used to be about getting to know someone.
Now it’s about sizing them up.

Two people sit down for a drink.
But instead of curiosity, there’s a lot going on in the background.

Do they fit into my future?
Are they ambitious enough?
Would they work with the life I’ve already built?

Somewhere along the way, dating stopped feeling like discovery…
and started feeling like an evaluation.

People aren’t asking
“Do I like this person?”

They’re asking
“Does this person make sense for my life?”

There’s nothing wrong with thinking about compatibility.
I filter for alignment every day for my clients.

But when every date becomes a checklist,
it’s harder for anything real to grow.

When you approach dating from a
“Do they check every box?” mindset

instead of
“Do I actually enjoy spending time with them?”
you make connection much harder to find.

Few relationships start from certainty.
Most come from two people who are open enough to see what's there.

Some people don’t feel grateful when help is offered.
They feel irritated.
Sometimes even angry.

Not because they don’t appreciate support.
For some people, independence wasn't a preference. 

It was something they had to learn early.
A survival skill. 

Relying on yourself felt safer than relying on anyone else.

So when someone offers help, it can land differently than intended. It can sound like:

“You should be able to handle this.”
Or
“You’re not doing enough on your own.”

The instinct is to push it away.
To prove you’re capable.
To show you don’t need anyone.

Over time, self-reliance becomes part of your identity.

It protects you.
It gives you control.
But it can also make genuine support feel uncomfortable.

The people who struggle most with accepting help usually aren’t ungrateful.

They just learned early that depending on others wasn’t always safe.

And those lessons have a way of following people long after they no longer need them.

Everyone brings an invisible resume into dating.
You won’t see it on their profile.
But it shapes everything that happens next.

The way someone trusts.
The way they react.
The expectations they carry into something new.

Past relationships teach people what feels safe.
They teach people what to tolerate.
They teach people what to avoid.

None of that is visible at first.

Two people can have great chemistry and still struggle to understand each other.

Neither person is wrong.
They’re reacting to experiences the other person never saw.

The people who build strong relationships eventually learn something most singles overlook.

You’re never just meeting a person.
You’re meeting the lessons their past taught them.

And the sooner you recognize those lessons,
the easier it becomes to understand the person standing in front of you.

International Women's Day is once a year.
Respecting women shouldn't be.

Everyone posts about empowering women on International Women’s Day.

But real empowerment shows up in how you treat women the other 364 days.

Do you listen to them?
Do you respect their boundaries?
Do you support their ambitions?

The strongest men I've met don't feel threatened by capable women.

They partner with them.
They build with them.

And the most confident women I know don’t shrink themselves to make anyone comfortable.

They're proud of who they are.

International Women’s Day is a great reminder.
But real respect for women isn’t seasonal.
It’s a standard.

If every relationship ends the same way, it probably isn’t just bad luck.
It's a pattern.

The same kinds of arguments.
The same kinds of red flags.
The same feeling that something isn’t quite right.

Different person.
Same outcome.

That’s usually when the question changes.

Instead of asking,
“Why does this keep happening to me?”
You start asking,
“What am I drawn to that keeps leading me here?”

It’s not blame.
It’s awareness.

Because once you start recognizing the pattern,
you also realize something important:
The things that feel familiar aren’t always the things that are good for you.

Sometimes they’re just the things you’ve learned to accept.

And real change usually starts the moment someone is honest enough to see that.

People are good at giving relationship advice.
They're terrible at receiving it.

Everyone can see the red flags in someone else’s relationship.

The patterns.
The warning signs.
The problems that seem obvious from the outside.

You listen to a friend describe their situation and think:

“You deserve better.”
“Why are you putting up with that?”
“Just leave.”

It all seems clear when you’re not the one inside it.
But when it’s your own relationship,
things start to look different.

You explain things away.
You focus on the good moments.
You tell yourself it’s more complicated than it seems.

The same advice you give other people suddenly feels much harder to follow.

You know what you need to do.
But emotions have a way of clouding decisions that would otherwise be easy.

Hope gets involved.
History gets involved.
Attachment gets involved.

And before you realize it,
the situation you would warn someone else about…
is the one you’re trying to justify.

That’s the tricky thing about relationships.

Clarity is easy from the outside.
It’s much harder when your heart is in it.

What I've learned after 20 years working with successful people and their relationships…
People tolerate what they believe they deserve.

I’ve seen it across thousands of conversations. 

Brilliant people.
Driven people.
People who run companies, lead teams, and build incredible lives.

And yet when it comes to relationships, something interesting happens.

The standard they hold for their career…
doesn’t always match the standard they hold for how they’re treated.

They explain things away.
They focus on the good moments.
They give someone another chance… and then another one after that.

Over time, the line of what feels acceptable moves.
What once would have felt like a dealbreaker becomes something they learn to live with.

We adapt quickly to what feels familiar.
Even when that familiarity isn’t good for us.

That’s one of the biggest things this work has shown me.

People don’t usually accept less than they want.
But they often accept exactly what they believe they deserve.

And until that belief changes, the outcome usually doesn’t either.

Your feelings are not instructions. 
Your needs are. 

“I feel hurt.”
“I feel overwhelmed.”
“I feel disconnected.”

That’s honest.
But it doesn’t give direction.

Needs do.

“I need more consistency.”
“I need clearer communication.”
“I need follow-through.”

One creates a conversation.
The other creates a path forward.

This applies in relationships.
In leadership.
In business.

If someone cares, they’ll want to understand your needs.

And if they don’t, that tells you more than another emotional conversation ever will.

Character isn't what people tell you. 
It's what they show you.
Watch closely. 

1️⃣ How they talk about people who aren’t there.
Listen to how they describe an ex or a coworker.
Respect shouldn't depend on who's hearing the conversation.

2️⃣ How they treat people who can’t benefit them.
The server. The receptionist. The driver.
Kindness that depends on someone's status isn't really kindness. 

3️⃣ How they react to someone else's achievements.
Are they genuinely happy, or do they get jealous?
It's hard to fake that reaction in real time.

4️⃣ How they treat their own mistakes.
How they handle accountability says a lot. 
Do they laugh it off, or take ownership and fix it?

5️⃣ How they talk about money.
Scarcity mindset, entitlement, or generosity. 
It surfaces fast and says a lot. 

Kindness under pressure is rare.
That's exactly why it matters.
