I wrote a college paper once about a new marketing concept called product placement.

I had noticed a box of Rice Krispies on top of Joey and Chandler’s fridge and thought it was clever, so I started to dig in. I quickly uncovered that brands were paying money to be in shows, while not actually being part of the story.

Fast forward 20+ years and product placement is just everyday life. We’re so used to it we barely notice it anymore. Some brands have even built entire media ecosystems around themselves (Red Bull comes to mind).

Which is why it’s actually really hard to surprise and delight people with it now.
Then last night happened.

During the Super Bowl halftime show, Bad Bunny featured real businesses as part of his set. The barrio showcased The Caribbean Social Club, one of the last surviving Puerto Rican clubs in NYC and Villa Tacos, a real taco stand from Los Angeles.

He didn’t insert brands into culture.
He elevated real places and real people through culture. 👏🏼

The performance told a story about identity, confidence, and pride in where you come from. Those businesses weren’t advertisements. They were part of the narrative.

For years marketing tried to sneak brands into entertainment.
The future is brands participating in community.

It didn’t feel like product placement because it wasn’t contrived. It was authentic. And because of that, it was far more powerful than any paid placement could be.

This morning I accidentally proved a marketing point I talk about all the time while having a debate with my dad.

Last night I noticed something off with my Jeep and asked my dad (I’m in Omaha this week) if there was a Christian Brothers Automotive nearby.

We Googled it.
Two locations popped up.

One was closer to their house.
4.7 stars on their reviews.

The other was farther away.
5.0 stars on their reviews.

My dad: “Let’s go to the one on Maple — it’s closer.”

Me: “Nope. We’re going to the five-star one.”

I willingly chose the less convenient option… because I trusted strangers on the internet more than distance.

When a customer needs a service — especially one they don’t fully understand — they’re not asking, “who is closest?”

They’re asking, "Who feels safest to trust?”

That decision gets made before they ever call you.

And THIS is why I tell franchisees that the entire customer experience matters. Earn those five star reviews. Because people choose to do business with you based on them.

Growing up, I could never find my name on magnets or keychains. (And if I did, it was usually spelled “Brook.”) 

But last weekend, my bff in Minneapolis sent me this photo: my name on a Coca-Cola bottle! 

One of the most iconic brands in the world... and there it was: Brooke (with an “e”)! 🥳

It felt like sweet redemption. And it reminded me just how powerful personalization can be. (And that she was thinking of me).

Coke didn’t just slap names on bottles.

They purposefully created an emotional connection between the consumer and the brand.

There’s even research that shows hearing your own name lights up the brain’s reward centers — we’re wired to love it.

This campaign makes people feel seen and that feeling is what made it legendary.

First launched in Australia in 2011, and here we are, 15 years later, and it’s still making an impact.

Personal connection > product promotion. Always.

p.s. I love that The Coca-Cola Company eventually expanded it to include terms like "BFF," "Soulmate," and "Family" so even if you couldn’t find your name, you could still feel included. 💕

A 100-year-old cereal brand made a commercial around 💩 jokes and it’s hilarious.

Raisin Bran (yes, really) put out a commercial that is basically 30 seconds of fiber and poop puns featuring William Shatner, aka “Will Shat.” 🤣☠️

It’s ridiculous and immature and funny.
And it’s also incredibly strategic.

Legacy brands are realizing they have a bigger risk than offending someone…being ignored.

For years, heritage brands tried to sound safe, polished, and respectable.
The problem is respectable doesn’t earn attention anymore.

DUDE Wipes figured this out early — humor lowers defenses.
When people laugh, they remember you. When they remember you, they trust you faster. When they trust you, they convert.

Raisin Bran isn’t trying to become edgy. They’re trying to become talked about.

And a brand that feels human is easier to buy from than a brand that feels corporate.

Marketing today isn’t about perfect messaging. It’s about emotional memorability.

Watch the commercial and tell me — would you have ever expected Raisin Bran to be the brand leaning into this type of personality? 😆 I remember when their value prop was two scoops!
