Job Developer

The Urban Farm

Project Manager for the Urban Farm. The end goal was sales of "live" vegetables growing in vertical towers utilizing a small foot print to maximize productivity.  To accomplish this, I designed overhead racks which supported the growing towers. LED grow lighting was used extensively throughout the facility and operated during off peak electrical hours to keep costs down.

Operation of the hydroponic facility was largely automated and plant nutrients were naturally sourced. Being indoors, the farm was pesticide free and water requirements were minimal.

Turn around times for produce, from seed to mature plant were short due to the ideal growing environment.

The end result was fresh, live produce, harvested and sold to customers in compostable brown kraft paper bags.

Part way through this position, I was seconded into the Network Operations Centre Group (NOC) to support the campus computer network.
Whenever the network engineer was absent, I was the backup support for the campus backbone in his absence.

As the Census Area Manager for London East and eastern Middlesex County, I was responsible for building a team of approximately 150 individuals to collect Census data. My role encompassed hiring 15 Census Commissioners, each assigned areas within my geographic territory. These Census Commissioners were tasked with hiring the Census Representatives that performed door to door data collection.
Part way through my contract, my colleague departed and I stepped up to manage the London West and western Middlesex County Census area. Despite all the challenges and double workload, I managed to successfully carry out the 1991 Census reporting in my area.
The highlight of my term, was meeting the Director of Statistics Canada, who came out to personally thank me for assuming responsibility for London West and western Middlesex.

Managed the seasonal operation of the Canada Employment Centre for Students.
Duties included, recruiting, training and staffing 4 student positions in the Centre.
Employer outreach was very successful with an average of 2 jobs available for every job seeker.

As a seasoned Job Developer I assist clients with barriers to employment obtain meaningful, long-term employment. This is achieved through supporting clients, finding creative solutions and employer outreach. I enjoy connecting with people, learning about their passion and creating lasting beneficial connections.

Most of my career has been in the staffing/human resources field. My lengthy service in this field has taught me to be compassionate to others. When an employee makes a mistake, many employers focus on the mistake yet ignore the many prior contributions of the employee. We must change this attitude and offer praise and encouragement to those who keep trying.

My other area of interest is technology. Long before the advent of cell phones and computers, I embarked on obtaining my Amateur Radio License issued by Industry Science Economic Development Canada (ISED). Back then it was simply known as the Department of Communications (DOC). I currently hold an Advanced Class License with Morse Code certification. You will hear me on the air in my spare time communicating with other amateur's worldwide.
