My best mate Simon Ward threw a club night in London last Saturday.

It wasn't for the gram, followers, for awareness. It was for Paul O'Connor

A Naked regular. Gone far too soon at the end of last year.

Naked was a house night Simon and I promoted together in London in the late 90s and early 00s. 

One of those nights where you didn't need to explain yourself to anyone you just showed up, the music hit, and something happened, you got lost and found yourself all in the same night.

Last Saturday was his send off, Simon raised over £3k for St Columba's Hospice on the night. Bloody Brilliant.

Here's the thing about that era that I'd forgotten.

The dance floor wasn't an escape. It was the opposite.

You dropped out of your head and into your body, totally present. 

No performance. No small talk. 

Just strangers becoming less strange, united by the same feeling in the same room at the same time.

That's community, proper community built in real time. 

No strategy. No funnel. No algorithm deciding who sees what.

Just... do you feel this too?

I felt it last Saturday, all of it, I have not felt it in a while now !!

The conversations that followed. The messages last week. The shift in people's moods the ripple is real.

There's something we're all quietly starving for that you cannot replicate on a screen.

I've been thinking about this for a long time.

When did you last feel genuinely alive in a room?

I've been coaching founders and leaders for three years.

And there's been a problem I haven't been able to solve.

The founder makes progress. Gets clearer. Braver. More grounded.

But their team doesn't move with them.

The gap gets wider, the founder grows, the team stays stuck then eventually, the founder hits a ceiling they can't breakthrough alone.

I can see it. They can see it. 

But I've never had a way to work on both simultaneously.

Until now.

I was coaching a founder last week.

He told me he sits on a plane waiting for takeoff just so he can get his emails done before the wifi kicks in.

Said it like it was normal, because for him it was.

I am not making it wrong either, it is someithing I recognised instantly - I've been that person.

The doing becomes the drug, switching off stops feeling like rest and starts feeling like falling behind.

I've spent years looking for the antidote. 

Some of it I've found in sleep, diet, meditation, adaptogens & nootropics, contrast therapy and getting off the booze. 

All of it helps, however none of it works if you're still half somewhere else.

The thing that actually cuts through is simpler and harder to manufacture.

Being properly present somewhere. 
Phone away. 
Nowhere else to be. 
People around you that get it.

I think we all know this, we've just forgotten it's an option.

Real life is making a comeback.

When did you last genuinely switch off?

There's always been a quiet side quest of mine.

To be liked.

As an agency founder. As a coach. As a person.

And I see it everywhere in the founders I work with.

The meeting they attend but didn't need to. 
The client they keep despite the warning signs. 
The "yes" that costs them more than any "no" ever would.

Every weak yes is a no to something that actually matters.

The truth is most founders don't have a capacity problem.

They have a "no" problem.
